Reading the other thread, I realized I do not have a key to my mother’s house and never did as an adult. I have never been there without someone being home to let me in.
But thinking back, I realized I NEVER had a key to their house, even as a child!
For one thing, we lived out in the country, and no one locked their doors, so there was never a need for a key. Honestly, I have to wonder if my parents even had a house key on their keychains LOL.
I’m going to have to ask Mom at Thanksgiving.
Anyone else remember those more innocent times when you didn’t need a key?

My mom was almost always home when I got home from school souonly brought one to school if we knew she wouldn’t be home. On the rare occasion that she ran late the neighbor had a spare.

I didn’t have a key until I was in high school and started car pooling with my friends and my mom started working full time during the week. I have never lived in a time where you didn’t lock your doors, but I also grew up (and still live in) a major city.

I had a key. We lived in the country, but always locked our door. We were robbed a couple times (they used the spare hidden key), so we stopped hiding a key (I still won’t as an adult). We always locked the house and had an alarm system.

No. We did not typically lock our house back then.

Not until after my dad died and my mom had a job where she wasn’t home right when we got home from school. I had some older siblings still at home though so there was always someone home to let us in. We play to key a keyless deadbolt with a code once DD gets old enough to be home alone for a couple hours.

I was a “latch key kid” in the early 80’s. In first grade I walked home from school, let myself in and was at home alone for a few hours before my mom got home from work. I remember watching General Hospital and Edge of Night when I got home.
I still have my original house key.

Nope the door was pretty much never locked (we lived in the country too). And if it was locked for some reason, probably by mistake 🙄, there was a key in the butter dish in the garage fridge.

yup... I only had a key to the house when I was older and moved away from home, in case they weren't home when I first arrived- if I was visiting them for the weekend, I mean.
When I was growing up, the back door was always unlocked. I just went around the house in through the back garage door. When I got into the higher elementary grades, my mom worked at the local hardware store, so if I got home and she was still at work, I'd let myself in the house.

Nope. My mom was usually home. On the rare occasion she was delayed, we just climbed in through a window. We lived in California with no a/c, someone's window was bound to be open.

No. My dad was in a wheelchair and didn't work, so there was no need for me to have a key as he was always home.

Never had a house key. My mom was always there when I got home. Guessing if for some reason she wasn't perhaps the doors weren't locked.

We had a hidden key but very seldom did we have to use it.

Yes. My parents worked and I entered the house 2-3 days a week by myself starting in grade 4 age 10. We lived directly across from the front door of my school.
Once in gr 4 I entered the house and we had been burglarized. I didn’t know. I thought my mom had been spring cleaning. The police assumed the robber left from the basement once he heard me enter. Mathis happened again in grade 7. I entered with friends and could tell something was off. No one was in but cupboards were opened that shouldn’t have been. We ran back to school and the principal called my mom and the police. After that we installed an alarm system. I continue to be petrified of home burglars.

OMG this is where our extra key was hidden too. I had a key that I would take to school on the rare occasion my Mom wouldn't be home when I got home (or went home for lunch).

Yes, and I kept it in the tiny pocket of my Kangaroos shoes! The other shoe had a quarter for a pay phone. I'm old

I was in elementary school, and we just walked home and let ourselves in. We had a designated neighbor to go to if needed. After my parent’s divorce, we also took turns making diner so it was ready for Mom when she came home. My parents remarried after my dad finally quit drinking, which was the main reason for the divorce. I was in junior high by then. They still loved each other very much. They remained totally in love and devoted to each other for the remainder of their lives, over another 40 years.

We lived on a dairy farm way out in the country on a road where if you didn't recognize the car driving down it, they were probably lost. I'm absolutely positive none of the doors on our house even had keys to them. I never heard of locking a door until I moved "into town" on my own.

My parents kept a spare key on a ledge by the back door, so on the rare occasion no one was home, I could use that. When I got my drivers license and had a key chain, my mom did give me a key. I kept it until she moved, I was around 30.

We lived in the country and there was a key hidden outside. Door was unlocked because my dad was around the yard somewhere but my sister and I were in the house alone until mom got home. If dad was gone he'd lock the door, even though if he was at the cows he'd never seen or hear someone come to the yard so he should have had to door locked.

In the 6th and 7th grade, I had to leave the key with the neighbor (who used to be my babysitter). When I got to the 8th grade I was allowed to take the key with me to school.

Ours was above the door jam of the door leading into the house from the garage. Probably like half of the population. But there was no need for it because the house wasn’t typically locked unless we were away for multiple days.
