Per the CDC. E Coli outbreak in 11 states so far. They don't know where the romaine came from that started the latest outbreak so they are advising not eating it period. They are also advising that you wash and disinfect any areas that came in contact with romaine.

Why does it always seem to be romaine lettuce? I know absolutely nothing about how one grows lettuce commercially....is there some growing condition that romaine requires that's conducive to being infected with e-coli?

I read a while back that it had to do with how it's harvested. They are hand harvested with a knife. They cut the lettuce at the base, and when they do so there's oozing of the white milky stuff (sap?). When the sap dries it traps any bacteria inside the plant if the harvester had a dirty knife.

I live on the stuff. Just bought 6 hearts of romaine which are all untouched. Glad I had spinach today instead, though that often ends up in recalls too.

Crap, bought the big pack at Costco yesterday. DH, who is frugal to a fault, would rather take his chances on E. Coli. He used all his self preservation brain cells on saving money brain cells.

Take it out of the fridge and throw it in the outside trash can. Or feed it down the garbage disposal one head at a time. I can’t think of a worse way to spend Thanksgiving than with food poisoning in the house. I’d do everything in my power to NOT risk it - says the woman who just through out 4 bags of salad that was bought yesterday.

"Officials say 32 people in 11 states were infected with the outbreak strain of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli between October 8 and October 31."
Why in the hell has it taken the CDC almost an entire month from the past illness to take action?
Are we even buying lettuce from that time frame still?

You're thinking "toss my cookies". Toss my salad is only what you do just before you serve it.

This has been going on for something like 6 months or so. Every time I start wanting a salad and think about going to get the stuff to make it, this happens.

And yet, it will not be pulled from the shelves of grocery stores... I just got back from a Trader Joe run and they were pulling all the packaged bags of romaine and all the pre-made salads from the shelf. One clerk muttered that it is a shame that we have to toss all this.

I just served salad (wel, offered it as a side) and surprisingly nobody ate it. I guess that was ok. Stinks that it needs to be thrown away.

Omg, I didn’t know about the peppermint bark Oreos, either! Sounds YUMMY! I’m gonna need to AVOID the cookie aisle next time! 😆 Andddd, I guess I can forgive myself for eating so many of those yummy, mini chocolate donuts that that cruel “Little Debby” taunts me with everrrrrrry time I go to the store lately! Damn, the coating actually isn’t very flavorful, and has the texuture of WAX, but I’ve craved them a LOT recently. Crap, bought the big pack at Costco yesterday. DH, who is frugal to a fault, would rather take his chances on E. Coli. He used all his self preservation brain cells on saving money brain cells. I get being frugal; I am, too! Maybe he can save it a few days & return it for a refund/ exchange; that’s what I’m doing. It’s out in in my garage, triple - bagged, waiting until I go to the store again. I just did the same thing for FOUR Duncan Hines cake mixes that were recalled. Also did the same thing when Blue Bell ice creams were recalled. No way I’m tossing allll that stuff before getting a refund! I took my Romaine out of the fridge, then re-washed alllll the veggies it was near, then disinfected the entire drawer. Ugh, on second thought, I may just return ALL the yummy veggies I just bought! My HUGE head of romaine wasn’t sealed like it is in some stores; I had forced it (LOL) into into a regular produce bag that’s not only wide open at the top, but about 2 inches of the lettuce was sticking out. Who knows if it possibly contaminated all my other veggies that were in the same bag. We WERE gonna have huge, yummy salads tonight, but I REFUSE to go to ANY grocery store right NOW ( the height of dinner hour, plus alllllll the pre- T’giving mayhem!) Nope, I’ll wait & exchange it around 9 pm tonight, and we’ll have Little Debbie donuts for din-din! 😜
