I live near where Dutch Bros got started. Tons of friends and family love them. Not me. First, the coffee is terrible. No taste at all. Second, they are so over the top friendly it borders on creepy. Especially for me if it’s a young man. It feels like flirting and that is just wrong on so many counts.
Now Starbucks, I love. I don’t go there more than once a week or so, but I find their friendliness of the professional variety, and I can count on the coffee being consistent.
Also, DIL, who I live with, has worked for them for almost 20 years, and they’ve been good to her. If you ask my DGD, who is 2, what mama does at work, she’ll tell you : “mommy makes coffee with a smile”.

If I am getting coffee out pretty much mean I did not have any at home. I don't like my own family in the morning without it. so shut up get my coffee and everyone within a 20-mile radius of us may live. I don't do morning and without coffee, I am far from nice. At our old Dutch brothers they knew my car an just handed me drink took my card and gave it back. Unless it was past noon.

These kind of threads always puzzle me. Maybe because I'm a born-and-bred southerner and chit chat is in our genes. Plus I just have a hard time complaining about someone being friendly. I'll take fake-friendly even. Sure beats the alternative.

I think it beats sitting at McDonald’s for 7-9 minutes at the food window never being acknowledged.
In this day and age service is going right out the window, literally, and I commend companies for attempting to keep it alive. I’m looking at you chick fila for being so durned nice.

They quite literally are excellent at it. It's epitomized in their standard, "My pleasure," response to interactions. They really make it 'a pleasure' to go there.

I have never been to Starbucks, and I have one in my building. Their ordering intimidates/confuses me. I’m a Dunkin’ girl

I have never been to Starbucks, and I have one in my building. Their ordering intimidates/confuses me. I’m a Dunkin’ girl it drives me crazy that their physical menu has like 5 things on it and rarely has pricing, certainly not for all size options. My regular order is super basic (unsweetened black ice tea) but I never go off course because I honestly have no idea what they actually have.

Is this just this Starbucks or is it a thing everywhere? As an introvert who just wants to chill and look at my phone or daydream as I wait, I do not enjoy this! I don't mind a quick hello, how is your day. But no, this is more of a how is your day, what are you out doing, how is your holiday shopping going etc. You should probably never come to the South then because it would most likely be your personal hell on earth! And for sure you should avoid Chick-Fil-A at all cost. I'm like Spongemom Scrappants in that as a Southerner the fine art of chit chat is in my genes. My complaints come when I get a grumpy cashier or barista who can't be polite and somewhat social. It doesn't take much effort to say hello or good morning.

Maybe it is possible they are mystery shopped. You can almost tell in the Mall which stores are mystery shopped. You can also tell which stores are definitely not mystery shopped.

If you download the Starbucks app, you can look at everything on their menu, see what is in each drink and the prices. Growing up in Seattle, the first time I went to Starbucks was as a teenager in the 80's ... to this day I still don't know all the stuff on their menu.

It is corporate standard to make a “personal connection” with every guest. It depends on how the SM and DM enforce the standard (they call corporate policy “standard”), but in many stores this is a requirement the employees are coached on. I think most of the managers realize that most customers don't want a personal connection with their barista! If you are a regular, you are going to develop a personal connection given time. Unless there is a constant overturn of employees. Those connections are the good ones. Not some forced interaction.

Someone mentioned RBF. I actually have been told I have that many times. Didn't stop them. I have had employees in places make small talk. It's fine when they seem to enjoy it and aren't being forced. But as someone who is not natural at it, small talk with someone else who is not natural at it, is very awkward and uncomfortable.
Plus, this wasn't just a few seconds. I was waiting a good 3-4 minutes yesterday as this poor girl asked me about my day, the weather, my errands, what I bought, how Target always seems to suck your money out of you, my plans for the rest of the day etc.

And I don't need a cashier commenting on what I'm buying at the store, either.

Starbucks menu I almost always get the same thing (Venti Strawberry Green Tea), but every once in a while I check the menu on my app to see if there is something new that sounds good. This summer I was in the drive through, looking at the app and there were "Blended Teas" showing up which I had never seen before. I asked about them and the barista had never heard of them before. I showed them it on my app and they had no idea about it. It was the only time I ever saw them on the app, which is too bad, because they sounded good.
