I would have said the same thing about shoes a year ago. Now thanks to the peas and gypo, I have pairs of boots/booties and want more.
Turns out I can dress more casually if i wear nice shoes.

I don’t see the thread as judgmental.
Just trying to see where other people are coming from.
After living with a spendthrift XH, I have a hard time spending on myself. I don’t have much money, but my DS has made it so if I need something, I can get it. Still, I have to talk myself into it.
However, counting boots, flip flops, etc, even I have more than 30 pair of shoes, although they’re mostly from clothing exchanges and Goodwill.

Girl, you don't want to know how many pairs of shoes I have. That. I love me some boots and shoes. No matter how big my ass gets, the shoes still fit.I also have an entire craft room stuffed full, and some general craft supplies in a separate she-shed. I don't feel an inkling of guilt over any of it. OMG, I seriously spit water when I read this. I used to be a clothes horse - when I'd lost a lot of weight and could rock it, you know? Then I gained it all back and can't lose it (damn menopause). So, all those clothes don't fit anymore but my shoes? Oh, yeah. They still fit. And I can curate as many more as I want without worrying about the size of my ass. My shoe size stays the same even if nothing else does.

My DH would love the Peas who are saying they don't spend money on themselves. I make up for what you Peas aren't spending on yourselves!
When we were first married we had nothing at all and I mean nothing, Years later my DH has made an amazing living for us and we enjoy what we have.

My husband and I take a very nice vacation every year. My bills are paid, we save money, etc...I want to enjoy myself while I am able. My BIL has a lot of regrets after my SIL passed away from colon cancer at the age of 53. He says he wished they would have gone on trips or splurged occasionally. Like others have said, you can't take it with you.

I enjoy the money I make working. I have hobbies I enjoy doing, places I love going and clothes I like wearing.

I'm my favourite person to spend money on...shrug! I figure I do enough for other people in lots of ways if I want to spend my money on fripperies that's not something anyone else has to 'get'.

I don't super splurge on myself these days. Mainly because I can't think of tons of things that I want. I DO, however, had a scrapbook room full of supplies I haven't touched in over a year. I haven't bought anything new in that time, though. I don't regret the spending as I plan to get back to it. I had the money, so why not?
While I absolutely get why people get their hair cut, I have a mild phobia about it and haven't been in a salon for about 17 years. I cut it myself.

One person's splurge is different from another person's. I think spending $100+ on hair appliances is insane because a $30 Conair will damage it just as well as the expensive ones. I’m perfectly happy with my drugstore skin care and makeup. Other people do differently and I don’t judge as I slap down cash for another pair of shoes/boots or clothes. I do kind feel like I’m well supplied in those categories so I’m more judicious about what I buy.

I am a believer of self care. A part of self care, is occasionally treating yourself to something (if it's within one's budget). Whether it's a nap, an item you want or pampering yourself(foot rub), etc... treat yourself, you deserve it! Treating yourself and taking care of you....makes you a better person emotionally and mentally.

We splurge on travel. 10+ years ago I would have said I could never spend as much as I do on a trip. But we make good money and unfortunately do not like where we live. And it is far more expensive to travel from our location than many others in the country. But we still do 'budget' travel (staying in condos to cook meals, no fancy hotels, room service, etc.).
I have only recently been more comfortable buying clothes that aren't on super discount, but most of that is for work where one needs to be presentable. I still wear clothes that are 6+ years old if they are in good condition. I don't buy a lot of shoes, mostly because I have a hard time finding shoes that for me well and are comfortable.

People prioritize their spending based on what is important to them and where they are in life.
When the kids were young we never went on vacation and drove old old old cars, but spent a fortune on daycare to be sure we had the highest quality childcare we could afford, and then music lessons and tutors. My brother lived in a brand new house, drove new cars, and his kids always looked like they stepped out of a magazine, but they had a $35/week babysitter and refused to pay for a reading tutor.
Things aren't quite so tight now, but we still have older cars and shop at Goodwill so that we can pay for college out of pocket. I don't have a cleaning lady but I do get my nails done every two weeks.
People make the choices that are best for their lives. Your choices and priorities are going to be different from mine. That's cool. It would be a boring world if we were all the same.
