Wow. I'm sitting here, absolutely in awe of your daughter's tenacity and bravery. Against all that life has thrown her way, she's going to college!
And what is wrong with your "friends" and family?! The phrase "check your privilege" comes to mind.
I say you should BOAST about the school your dd is going to! She deserves every bit of congratulations that all the other kids received. And any time a naysayer dares to open their mouth, I'd be singing about how proud I am of my child.
And just to be honest, her uncle sounds like the kind of asshole who would be rude to waitresses and others who aren't "good enough" in his eyes. What a toxic piece of dirt.

Wow , again I am teary eyed. Thank you for sharing in this with me. If I could finally figure out how to post a picture of her I would, we doing the "signing" in her shirt to send to the coach, this afternoon.

I’m sorry that some of your friends and family aren’t as accepting and excited about your daughter’s achievements and choice of school. That really sucks. Boo to them.

Good for her, for choosing a school that fits HER needs not the expectations of others. I’m not surprised you’re so proud of your daughter. She has battled her whole life with physical and learning disabilities, and struggled with depression too. The fact she has achieved so much is very impressive, and she has fought hard for it. It says a lot about the kind of person she is. Sing her praises from the rooftops - we’re all joining in! So much YES on both of these! Congratulations! (And as someone who didn't go to an Ivy but went to a big name, highly competitive school - it ain't all that! I have come to realize that I probably would have been better off at a different school, although I have no regrets since that's the journey I took to get where I am now. Your education in all respects is what you make of it!) |

That is just awesome for her! And I'm sure you must be beaming with pride, as you should! I hate when someone has to rain on someone else's parade. As a mom of kids with challenges to overcome, I say don't even listen to naysayers. Some people could really use a dose of humility.

For those that mentioned my BIL, he is someone I have a hard time with. Very selfish and insecure man, I am sure to him it is just a lost opportunity to brag even though he sees my kids 2 a year (lives 40 minutes away and passes our house in the summer to go to the beach 1/4 of a mile down the street). I have so many stories  You ladies are really overwhelming in your support, it truly warms my heart. |

I don't understand the mentality of people who think kids have to go to 'certain' schools. My daughter picked an university here in Colorado and I couldn't be more proud. It's not one of the top big 3 ones but it is a good one and I really don't give a flip. She is doing awesome and that is all that matters. I wouldn't care if it was a community college or an ivy league college...
