I can't answer for psiluvu, but yes, we have a separate sponge for washing the cat/dog dishes and wash them in the garage utility sink, not the kitchen sink. They do NOT go in the dishwasher. Ever. And while I don't exactly want to use the words 'gross' or 'revolting' in regards to pets licking dishes or them being washed in the dishwasher, I do find it icky. I will admit to being totally gagged at the thought of the same sponge/dishcloth being used for pet dishes as for human dishes, though. That goes way too far for me. Sorry. How often do you change your dishcloth/sponge? The dogs’ bowls were always the last thing handwashed. I use cloths. Find sponges disgusting. A clean cloth is always used for a fresh sink full of dishwater. They are never reused. As for the dishwasher, hot water and detergent is killing all sorts of things from viruses, raw meat yuck, raw eggs...it can handle dog and cat germs too. It made my life tons easier when I bought the dogs dishwasher safe bowls. Every day/couple of times a day. I use crocheted dish squares for human dishes and SOS pads for the pet dishes (they're stainless). And I know the dishwasher takes care of all germs and stuff, I just find it an icky thought to put slobber-slimey pet dishes in there. Since I don't HAVE to, I don't.

Alrighty.... I'm thoroughly grossed out. Dishwashers do not sterilize and some don't even sanitize:

People let their pets lick their faces - even their mouths - and are afraid to put a licked dish in the dishwasher? People are strange. But see, I don’t let animals lick my face, although a lot of people I know do. I do think it’s gross to let animals eat if people dishes.

Then explain why people are instructed to use a dishwasher to sterilize canning jars before using them? Our dishwasher has a setting for that and we use it.

It was interesting at the time. It may have been a series as I also vaguely recall one on some very expensive sex dolls.

Are you sure your dishwasher has a setting called "sterilize" and not "sanitize"? They are two different things. Also, I don't can; however, according to this, you need to submerge in boiling water for it to be considered sterilized: nchfp.uga.edu/publications/nchfp/factsheets/sterilizing.html

I wanted to try and find the episode to link it, but I'm not that brave.

Just meaning germs are germs. Dishwashers still do a better job of cleaning dishes than hand washing. However, some viruses can still survive, especially if your dishwasher isn't heating up correctly or you aren't using hot water. Knowing that, I wouldn't want to eat off of dishes that shared a cleaning cycle with a toilet brush, plunger or dildo. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

We don’t have a gas stovetop so our canning abilities are limited, LOL. I’ve sterilized/sanitized baby bottles and pump parts in a steam bag in the microwave before, and those didn’t get submerged. Interesting.

We’ve also washed mason jars in it when DH wanted to can some tomatoes. Nobody has died yet, LOL. I can’t imagine what would possess anyone to put a toilet brush in the dishwasher, eww!

Frankly, sanitize isn’t a word with a definite standard. Although sometimes people use them interchangeably.

Absolutely not. I can't stand animals that beg for people food, so I don't give any of my pets scraps of any kind. OK, but how do you wash their dishes?

We only give the pets people food on special occasions, like Thanksgiving, and only a little tiny bit each. We do let them eat it off a plate sometimes. I feel like the dishwasher gets it clean enough. And I'm a germophobe. For some reason i can't bring myself to wash the pet bowls in the dishwasher though. So those get hand washed.

Wait, why would one wash a toilet brush? The toilet cleaner is highly caustic, and it’s covered in that, and it sits in its little bowl holder thing far away from anything food related (shudder). When it gets manky you toss it and buy a new one...it has one purpose, and never does anything else or goes anywhere else.
We need a new thread for this.

No, I would not. But, I'm a stickler for good dog behavior and allowing plate licking (or really any kind of licking on a person or a person's things) is rude dog behavior. My dog gets whatever he eats in his own bowl. That way he's not begging at the table, standing in the dishwasher (that's TERRIBLE dog behavior) or counter surfing.
I'm always amazed at what people will let their dogs get away with. If you wouldn't let your kid do it, then don't let your dog do it.

The thought grossses me out....if I saw someone do that I'm not sure I'd ever eat at their house.
ETA: I know the dishwasher sanitizes them, but it's just...idk, and I have an iron stomach. It might go back to being a kid and seeing dogs fight over a dirty diaper or eating rotten food out of the pressure cooker.

This has been enlightening. I'm far more grossed out by raw meat and restaurant glasses/silverware than I am by a dish that a dog licked that has then been washed in a dishwasher. It takes all kindsa kinds! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg)
