Inspired by the paint and stencils release in Maggie Holmes new line, I'm going to try my hand at using stencils and acrylic paint to add texture and depth to my layouts.
Though I'm not buying new paint. The craft stuff I have now is fine. Might need to look for a stencil I like.
What technique are you going to try? 😀
ETA:
I tried it and it is so easy! Love it!

I've never done print and cut on my Silhouette. I think I'll try that.
I also just got my first big shot and a minc for Christmas. I think 2019 will be the year of new tool techniques for me.

It goes through stencils beautifully as acrylic paint can be messy with stencils alone. You can mix it with the acrylic paint for some great dimension.

I am taking an online class by an artist right now. She is sharing a few things I have not tried before so it's fun. Not sure what else I will try as it's just as I find new things. And I personally prefer acrylic paint with my stencils rather than modeling paste. It's something you have to try. The key to using acrylic paint with stencils effectively is: 1. Put dab of paint on a palette (craft sheet or deli paper works too). 2. Using a makeup sponge, dab a bit of paint onto the sponge. 3. Pounce a bit of the paint off onto your palette. 4. Then pounce onto your piece through the stencil. Play on book paper, security envelopes, etc. You get great looking texture that way. Too much paint causes it to seep under the stencil and get yucky. If you just dab off and pounce, you can come up wth beautiful stenciled images. Have fun, and here is an example of some stenciled flowers I did with orange paint. Super fun and beautiful. I do this on almost everything I create.

That looks like it would be amazing on little zippered pouches!

Awe, thank you streetscrapper! That is a piece of canvas in the photo. I have made bookmarks, aprons, mini books (in the photo), and of course on paper and cardstock too for various pieces. It truly is so fun and brings me SUCH joy!!! I actually have a couple of zippered pouches that I was going to paint also. Here are my tutorials on the book and on a bookmark if you are interested. You are welcome, quietgirl. I usually use the big end and the sides to use different colors. When they dry on the sponge, I cut it off to get a clean piece. That way I can use the sponge for quite a while. I don't wash them. I use, dry, cut, repeat.

I am going to try a new technique that I didn't get to do last year because of major life changes. It's called scrapbooking regularly. I may even get up 30 min early just to have my quiet memory-keeping time.

But it is not cheap, so I have been collecting items a little at a time, cause I've still been spending on all my other crafting projects. Do you have any blog posts on some basic supplies to get started?

I'm going to crack open my Brushos - the ones I've been talking about using since I "had to have them" several months ago - and I'm going to make some galaxy backgrounds and then I'm going to make pretty watercolor backgrounds for cards.

I bought some Faber-Castell India ink markers last year and haven't used them much. I want to change that.

I used to be a perfectionist, and now I love messy. LOL! Anyway, supplies can get very expensive. Look for sales, realize you don't have to have the best, find what YOU like, and there are also tons of freebie things that you can collect that work in mixed media. I have not done a specific post. Maybe I should. I did teach a class at my church and gave the class a list. Let me get it and post here shortly. And PM me anytime you have questions.

I've never used alcohol inks, or really done any water coloring for a background. I would like to hop on the mixed media train.

Getting back into art journaling for me. these are all my (perpetual) crafting resolutions, too. I don't have a specific *technique* to try, but I do want to actually USE the supplies and tools that I keep buying. (dies, embossing folders, a library of Silhouette shapes, stamps, Nuvo drops, specialty embossing powders, etc.) -- I've purchased at least 6-8 Lea France scrapbooking page templates over the years (templates for European-style scrapping called *Azza*), and I've only ever made ONE 12x12 page in that style-- and that one page isn't even finished, lol. -- I've been fascinated with the look and style of Kiwi Lane scrapbook templates (for borders and page accents) so I'd like to incorporate those into my scrapbooking, too. -- and to REGULARLY use my Silhouette, my Big Shot dies, and my embossing folders to make my own SB page embellishments.

The technique I’d like to try this year is actually printing my photos to scrap them! I bought a new photo printer about 6 months ago. Printed one photo from my phone. It came out dark. I used some filters to lighten it, printed it, was happy with it and then turned the printer off and walked away. Awful! I need to dust it off and get to printing.
A while back I picked up a Minc pen and I’d really like to Minc my own handwriting of titles and captions for some pages. I think it will look really neat.

Patter Thank you for all those tips! Today I bought FolkArt stencils (6 patterns) for $2.97 and a pack of makeup sponges for $1.71 at WM. I'm excited to try my hand at using stencils & paint on my layouts.

I'm excited to try my hand at using stencils & paint on my layouts. Oh awesome, and you are welcome! Try it on book paper, an old security envelope or something. That way you can practice and see that you don't need much paint at all. It almost seems dry. Too much paint will seep under the stencil and make a mess. Practice and have fun. A lot of times I will create my stenciled image on something else anyway, cut out, and then doodle around once I glue it to a page. Here is an example. The first photo shows the stenciled flowers after being cut out and glued to my card (bottom card). The second photo is the finished piece with the doodles around the stenciled flowers. Have fun!

Because my previous strategy of cleaning only when it gets to the point that I can't find something essential (like scissors, or a paper trimmer, or my ATG) has not been particularly effective.

Not really a technique, but I want to branch into 12x12 layouts. I’m strictly Project Life and 6x8 for projects like December Daily and Week in the Life. I’ve created one 12x12 layout in my life, which I lifted from the Felicity Jane blog.
I would really like to mix in 12x12 layouts in my PL album for 2019.

Patter - your samples are beautiful! The orange flowers are beautiful.
I'd really like to try hand lettering. Not the brush lettering I see everywhere, but just a really nice hand drawn lettering of some sort. Something I could incorporate into my scrapbooking. Does this even exist?
