Lying again. Nothing new. "But Trump seemed especially attuned to and plenty sensitive about the split-screen image of the rally O'Rourke, El Paso's former congressman, was holding outside in the heavily Democratic city. Exaggerating, as he's prone to do, about his crowd size, Trump claimed that O'Rourke had only drawn 200 or 300 to his protest while they had 35,000 people trying to get into his. ... According to NBC News, O'Rourke's team said there were about 7,000 people at his rally and mile-long march beforehand, per law enforcement. And Bloomberg News reported that O'Rourke's rally had been estimated at 10,000 to 15,000, according to local police. At various points during his own rally, Trump claimed that 69,000 people had RSVP'd and that fire marshals allowed 10,000 people in with "tens of thousands" still watching outside. But NBC News reported that Trump's rally was at its 6,500 capacity with 10,000 to 12,000 watching outside or in overflow areas, per the local police and fire departments." www.npr.org/2019/02/12/693773455/trump-took-fight-for-border-wall-to-el-paso-where-orourke-was-ready-for-him

I read this article today from CBC. Is Canada a dangerous bastion of socialism? And these comments from the State of the Union "Here, in the United States, we are alarmed by new calls to adopt socialism in our country," the president said. "America was founded on liberty and independence - not government coercion, domination, and control. We are born free, and we will stay free. Tonight, we renew our resolve that America will never be a socialist country," Trump declared. I am curious what Americans really think. Not what the President says. I feel like he is just using the word socialism to fear monger. To stir up his base. To make people want to avoid the "dangers" that the Democrats and their socialist agenda have in store for America. I enjoy reading the news and keeping up with world events. I always thought Americans and Canadians had a lot of the same ideals, the last few years that seems to be pulling further apart. Most Americans are uneducated about the socialist elements that already exist (to their benefit) in our society, and have been scared by the bogeyman of Venezuela (socialist totalitarianism, not Democratic with some socialist elements). My daughter is currently learning all this in her regular high school government class, as I did 30 years ago. I'm not sure why so many Americans are so uninformed on this subject.

What bothers me are his lies about Democratic ideals - saying we're the party of infanticide, for example - and his lies about border safety and immigrants. People seem to actually believe that shit. And then he stood up there last night and lied about crime statistics in El Paso and told his audience not to believe the government data on the subject, because he'd heard from "many people" that crime is down since they put a fence in El Paso. How are people honestly so stupid? How do they not see him for the greasy, crooked con man he is?

Ugh. Deplorable doesn’t even scratch the surface. I’m continually so disgusted that this is the face America shows the world. I just can’t even anymore.

Kyle Griffin... ”Mulvaney and budget officials want to redirect unspent federal dollars to fund Trump's wall. The money would reportedly come from disaster relief funds intended for California and Puerto Rico and DoD funds for military construction like family housing.” From Politico... “The White House is firming up plans to redirect unspent federal dollars as a way of funding President Donald Trump’s border wall without taking the dramatic step of invoking a national emergency.Done by executive order, this plan would allow the White House to shift money from different budgetary accounts without congressional approval, circumventing Democrats who refuse to give Trump anything like the $5.7 billion he has demanded. Nor would it require a controversial emergency declaration.”Politico

”NEW: Mark Kelly, retired astronaut who has become a strong gun control advocate in the aftermath of a failed assassination attempt on his wife, announces a run for U.S. Senate in Arizona. abcn.ws/2DBKR1U”
Let’s hope Arizona voters are smarter then Texas voters, who re-elected Cruz, and elect Mark Kelly as their Senator.

”Let's hurt military families and disaster stricken areas" said no one ever. Until @realdonaldtrump came along.
Taking money from congressionally appropriated construction funds for military families & disaster areas is not only harmful, it's unconstitutional.”
Didn’t a lot in the military vote for trump?

I always thought Americans and Canadians had a lot of the same ideals, the last few years that seems to be pulling further apart. This is from the New Green Deal the plan supported from the very progressive wing of the party like Bernie Sanders and AOC. A deal most of the declared Democratic candidates for President have attached themselves to. “Guaranteeing a job with a family-sustaining wage, adequate family and medical leave, paid vacations, and retirement security to all people of the United States.”The key word is “guaranteeing”. In theory it sounds great, but in reality is it? France had a plan they thought would fight income inequality and now there are the “yellow vests” protesting almost every weekend because the rank and file feels the grand plan sucks and they want more. People always want more, it’s in our DNA. And there is nothing wrong with that. But when people are reliant on the government to give them more, there comes a time ,as France and Greece have found out, that the government can no longer give as much “more” as the people are demanding. Then what? I’m not saying the government shouldn’t help people with safety nets and programs to help them get out of poverty, I’m just against the government becoming so big it becomes all things to all people. I’m more for all levels of government working in partnership with the private sector to achieve the same goals.

ugh. I will NEVER, EVER be able to fathom why it is apparently *okay* for the President of the United States to out-and-out LIE during a speech. (or at any other time, really...)
And really? Hillary and Russia and e-mails? STILL?!?!?
You know how some speeches have a person standing up there doing ASL for hearing-impaired people in the audience? They need to have a person who stands up on stage (right behind his shoulder) and holds up HUGE cue cards that just say "THAT's A LIE" on them after every lie that DT tells. The person's arms would probably get tired just a couple minutes into the speech.

”David Bernhardt, the Interior Department's acting chief, wants to roll back endangered-species protections on a tiny fish, a change that benefits a California farmers group that he once represented as a lobbyist.”
Didn’t take long.
ETA..
Eric Umansky...
”A lobbyist got paid $1.3 mil to push against fishery protections in CA
That lobbyist? He’s now *head of the Interior Dept* & ordered the exact rollback he got paid for.
Scientists say it will cause toxic algal blooms.
But don’t worry, he got “verbal approval” from govt lawyers”

He understands stretching the truth a bit,but even he (who "had to" vote for Trump), said that there should be a law passed to make it impossible to get away with politicians (& the President) from outright lying. I agree. Trump's moronic base believes anything he says and 99% of his words are lies. Something has to change!

There are countries that are doing this and doing this well. I am not saying they are all doing it perfectly but doesn't the average person want a retirement income, maternity and paternity benefits, basic medical care, etc. And I know for Canada we do not pay a crazy amount more in taxes than a similar income on the U.S.

If the above is correct, are we to assume that California and Puerto Rico are fine now and no longer need the funds? Just because they haven’t been used yet doesn’t mean they are not needed. You can’t fix everything at the same time.

Not my monkey, not my zoo, but if your family came to the end of a year with a “surplus” in some areas, AND you had a massive mortgage—or other debt—would you build an addition on the house (or, say, a WALL around the garden)? Or maybe pay down the debt?
