This was a year book from medical school, not college. Adult, about 25 years old, not a BOY!! Totally unacceptable! Of course he should resign! Don;t forget his nickname with his picture 'coonman'......... Enough said!?!?!?

Yeah that was clearly bait. If you have a SHRED of reading comprehension ability - then you know that he said nothing of the sort. I already had to back out of a thread on Facebook this week about complete misinformation about the New York abortion legislation. Ditto. And I'm sure there is a group of prayer warriors fighting for my soul as we speak, since I am a baby killer who wants hard decisions to be made between a woman and her doctor (even though I'm actually prolife and just want old white men to stop trying to make personal decisions for women). I'm sort of gutted that this is probably going to be the defining issue of the next presidential election, and will likely lead to Trump's reelection. Omg yes. Its the blatant misinformation and in the my particular instance, I didn't like her using bible verses (harshly) to back up that misinformation. Its really awful. I had one of them derail it into transgenders before I blocked her to shut her piehole up, lol. It was just crazy. I'm like you - I think those choices are not mine to make for other people, and should be between a woman and her doctor - like they aren't already agonizingly excruciating and painful enough circumstances?

Since people have shared the Covington kids pictures (or pictures of students assumed to be them/mistaken for them) and harsh judgement passed, I wonder what the thought of the VA Governor (while in high school ) having been found in both KKK robes and black face is. I wonder if the same people that judge people's as racist because they are conservative will feel the same of this clown?
People on the left ask their representatives to resign when this kinda crap pops up. Al Franken anyone? I just got home from work and don't get to watch news at work. This is absolutely despicable and the governor should resign.

Of course we do. He’s racist. He doesn’t get a pass because the picture is old. We have to stop letting kids off the hook for this stuff. But you’re wrong...they’re not racist because they’re conservative; they’re racist because they’re RACIST. I’m smart enough not to equate the two.

Sometimes it doesn't matter how many times you change your peaname, it's the same behavior/types of threads over and over and over. Like I say to my kids, when the problem is always everybody else, the problem isn't really everybody else.
Anyway, I'm sure he'll resign by tomorrow. Known racists Donald Trump and Steve King remain in office. Care to comment?

Disgusting. I hope he resigns tomorrow. How is this just now being found though? He never should have gotten elected to any public office with this out there.

Northam identified himself as being one of the people in the photo from 1984. I don't think it was right for him to have dressed either in blackface or as KKK, whichever he was actually guilty of. I don't understand how a photo like that would have been put in a yearbook. Maybe what I understand least is why this offense from 35 years ago is now an extreme crisis. The extreme crisis to me are the comments he just made that a child born after a failed abortion attempt "would be resuscitated if that's what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother." --- bringing to my mind the late 1950s early 1960s practice of immediately taking grossly deformed thalidomide babies that were born alive and leaving them alone and uncovered in front of an open window until they stopped breathing. That's an immediate issue to me. The photo is ancient news. How did all y'all who voted for him think he was governing before you saw the photo? And how does a 35 year old photo change his recent past governance? Ummmmm...try starting your own thread if you have something to say. Said on the thread she started.

I'm not surprised at all that people here are repeating it as fact. I honestly cannot for the life of me grasp that pro-birthers believe that pro-choicers are in some way pro-abortion and support it like it's some kind of happy go lucky decision or merely a flippant lifestyle choice. Do they really think so little of us, that we're so inhumane and cruel? There is no critical thinking whatsoever, no self-reflection, no attempt to even reconcile who we are as people and that we might have a different philosophy about what constitutes life. We are just bloodthirsty baby-murderers to them. It is rabid and irrational and not a good look for them.

You are taking that quote completely out of context. Read the other thread for an explanation. Missing the point here. The man has been governor long after he posed for a photo. People were happy to vote for him. People liked the way he was governing. The photo was taken long before that, so how does the revelation of the photo now change how he was already governing? This is not a question of losing faith in his ability to handle governing a state going forward. The timing seems anything but coincidental to me.

Even if he has changed his ways, I can believe that he’s changed in 35 years. But it was unwise for him to not disclose this preemptively. He was foolish to think it wouldn’t come out. I think his concealing of it is more telling.

I've been quite open about abortion on this board and how I was not wanting changes in the law. There are changes and proposed changes in abortion laws right now, and that makes it immediate and therefore makes me question the timing of this photo coming out. You keep bringing this back to me. Let it go. I want to know about the people who were happy with the way he was governing before they saw the photo. If they were happy with the way he was governing, how do they feel about the way he has already governed now that they have seen the photo from 35 years ago? There's no right or wrong answer.

Edited to add: Ok, I guess I thought he was much older than he is. I was thinking it was from decades earlier than it was. Realizing that if this was in the 80's, there really is no excuse of ignorance. Times were not that different then. Roughly 25 at the time in 1985.

I, as a white woman, feel like he would be able to represent my interests. However, that is a small portion of governing. The lion’s share is working with others to get laws changed/passed, to work with others on building the infrastructure of the state, to work with deciding on priorities in running public education- to name a few. I think that in order to do that well, you need to be able to come to the table as blank a slate as you can. People need to be able to trust and maybe respect you - that is WANT to help you get things done. If people see you as the racist dude who thought dressing up as kKK and man in blackface was funny, many POC will justifiably see you as racist and untrustworthy before you utter a word. It certainly isn’t the governor we need in the multi-cultural haven Northern VA is. As we see in congress after congress, it is how well representatives and senators get along that allow the legislative process go on. At the governor level, I worry about all the People of Color that Northam has alienated and am not sure he will be able to govern as effectively.

Do you think he's made some good decisions but his time is done? I'm just curious.

I am furious with him. Of course he has to resign. I'm almost more upset at him because he's a Democrat & I do expect more from 'My' side. He should have known better. He should never gave run for office, knowing he'd done that. Now, because of his abhorrent, rscist behavior, he's destroyed his career, his reputation, and he's hurt the state of Virginia, who may end up with a Republican governor.

I've no problem with people calling for Northam to resign. I'm 100% fine with it. But if you're doing so and *haven't* publicly called for Trump to resign at least *30 times*, including after he called neo-Nazis "fine people" in *2017*, I have *strong* feelings about your values.

On the last point, the Lieutenant Governor is a promising young black Democrat who fairly easily defeated a pro-gun and anti-choice candidate and would succeed Northam and should serve the state well should he do so. Governor comes up every four years. We could end up with a Republican governor in any given election cycle.

Northam took office in January of 2018, so hasn’t had a lot of time to have an impact on the state. That first year is often ground-laying. And I’ll admit to paying more attention the Shit-Show in the White House this past year than to our own state legislature. So, this new info honestly hasn’t changed my opinion of anything he has done while in office. So disappointing that he should resign now - he will have left behind a legacy of nothing but this incident.

Democrats in recent times always fall on their swords over things like this and encourage other Democrats to do so. Republicans double down on their "youthful indiscretion" defense. Yes. Democratics aren't afraid to call each other out. Look how swiftly they pressured Al Frankenstein to step down. Republicans are co-dependents. If you have any doubt, I present exhibit A Donald Trump. to answer the question, yes he should step down. It's disgraceful and he should have known better.

He's got to go. He was an adult and it was the 80s. I was a high school and college student in the 80s and we all knew enough that blackface and KKK robes and being called "Coonman" were not appropriate. And to have them commemorated in a yearbook? Proudly? Yeah - he's got to go.

I think his concealing of it is more telling. Yes. I agree with this exactly. I was in college in the 80s and I knew this kind of stuff was beyond abhorrent. In the late 80s/early 90s when Ted Danson was dating Whoopi Goldberg and he went blackface, it was scandalous and I haven't been able to look at him since. Gov. Northam is my governor. Yes, I do think he should resign over this. Just like my favorite senator - Al Franken - resigned when it came to light his disgusting behavior with women. It makes me sad, because these men are also doing good and do way more good than their Republican counterparts are, but it is so unbelievably abhorrent to me that an adult of 25 or 26 (he was born in 1959) was so racist and ugly that he did this. As @missjen says, if he had come out before being elected or in the 90s and said "OMG - I cannot believe that I did things like this in the 80s and I am humiliated beyond belief and look at all the things I have done as a result of learning from that abhorrent episode" I would be behind him 100%. Like Beto with his drunk driving. He took responsibility and is making changes from it. Northam did not and only apologized when it came to light. I've no problem with people calling for Northam to resign. I'm 100% fine with it. But if you're doing so and *haven't* publicly called for Trump to resign at least *30 times*, including after he called neo-Nazis "fine people" in *2017*, I have *strong* feelings about your values. 100% yes. What Northam did was despicable and I do not think he can govern effectively, but any person who has ever defended Trump and thinks that they can point the finger at Northam, I agree with carhoch that your values are complete out of alignment.
