We all knew that Blanche was a busy lady but the other numbers really surprise me

I'd put Rose at a definite thirty. After being convinced she killed her husband in bed (heart attack) she refrained for 15 years. Yes, I've watched a few episodes more than once.

That was quite the little geriatric bunny ranch. I'm thinking Sophia held back a few because I'm sure there were years it wasn't ladylike to keep a list. Team Sofia here

When you watched the show, what age group did you envision for them? I thought that Rose, Blanche and Dorothy were at least 60---until the episode about menopause. That would have made them much younger.
Sophia--had to be in an age group that made her at least a teenager during WWII.
Back to the subject matter---!! I didn't realize what a frisky bunch of women they were.

Team Sofia here That's just it, it broke my heart to realize that they were not really golden or geriatric. The show ran for 7 years and in the final season Dorothy was only 62. They characters were really only in the 50s.

IRL, Blanche was around ten years younger than the rest. Sophia was a year younger than Dorothy! On the show, they hinted Blanche was younger but I don't think they ever specified.
ETA: I thought Blanche was mid to late 50's and Dorothy and Rose were 60's.

The number of partners doesn't surprise me. I know some people in my circle that had 20 partners by age 21. The 70's was so sexually free for many people that sometimes my friends didn't even know someone's name or full name. Many songs from that time talk about making it with someone that just saw.
I also thought they were older on that show - like that Sophia was in her 90's. Now that I am in my 60's the still seem old.

I remember Blanche having a pregnancy scare. So she wasn’t as old as I thought she was when I watched the series first time around. Seeing that episode much later made me realize I could be considered ‘golden’ too. But I don’t have the experience they do. Lol.

Sofia was Dorothy's mother. I think you are referring to the actresses ages. It was a bit of a controversy when that came out, that they didn't use an older actress to play Sofia. The director and producer defended it as planning a long run for the show as is and an older actress could die before it ended. I definitely thought of them as older. Of course part of it had to do with their kids being grown. I am now they age they would have been and still have one in high school.

The Golden Girls was my very favourite show when I was young. I used to write about it in my school journals. I was ten when it ended. I have been rewatching it and why, oh, why did my parents let me watch this show? . I am guessing everything just went over my head but even still- not appropriate, LOL.

I always thought of them (the characters) as being in their late 50's at the start of the series, aging into their mid\late 60's by the end. I just base that on the ages of their kids and grandkids. Sophia often mentioned that she was 80\81\82, depending where in the timeline that episode was.
As for the number of men - I'm surprised that Blanch had only 165. The way she bragged, I would have said a lot more than that. lol. And on the flip side, I didn't think the other 3 would have had that many, especially Dorothy.

But they were golden. 50 is golden, right? Only Sofia was geriatric. I think people in their 50s look much younger these days or I certainly hope! I have an aunt who is 65 and she looks like my sister. My 75yo uncle looks and acts like he's no older than 50. People in my mother's family don't go gray and don't wrinkle a lot so they look great, but still, I don't know too many women who have had that many dates, let alone that many lovers!

I always thought "golden years" were past retirement age and as I was growing up and only till the last decade or so almost everyone I knew worked until they were 65. Of course now people do early retirement and many work past retirement age.

Well, we all knew Blanche was a brazen little hussy but I am a bit surprised about no-nonsense Dorothy. I am so sharing this with my GG besties...one of whom lays claim to being Blanche when we all live together. I've been assigned Rose.

I remember when I was younger thinking they were the oldest women ever, but now, they still seem a lot older than I am, but way less old than I thought they were!

I've never watched the show faithfully, caught episodes over the years here and there. Probably would watch it now if it was brand new today...as I think I could relate to them more. I am guessing when it first came on it just didn't relate to me because I was younger... I don't know why.. but from the episodes I have watched I would still think of them way older than me (now).. I'm 50. I picture them all in the mid to late 60s.. with Sophia mid 80s.. (this would be if it ran today)..
ANYWAYS, that is A LOT OF MEN... no matter what!! haha

I've never seen this show, but based on this thread, it wasn't about what I thought it was, which is old ladies doing old lady things. Somehow copious quantities of sex never entered my mind.

It makes me think that either my perspective (full disclosure I'm 43) of 50 year old women is skewed or generations past actually looked older than their years.

When the show was on I was in my teens. Back then anyone in their 40’s or 50’s was old to me. Heck I remember my friend was disgusted because she walked in on her parents having sex. We were stunned because we thought people in their 40’s were too old to have sex.

I knew the actresses were younger but I always thought the characters were supposed to be in their 60s with Sophia being in her 80s. Sophia looked a lot like my grandmother who was in her 70s around that time which meant my mom was in her 50s at the time. The rest of the group looked way older than my mom. They weren't working which I took to mean they were over retirement age (65ish) Honestly I think the show writers originally wanted them to be post retirement but ran a few episodes that either the writers had little idea about older women or they ran out of material hence the pregnancy scare for Dorothy. For some reason I thought all of their kids were 40 ish and older. My oldest is 37 I had her when I was 21. I've been in menopause for 8 years now.
