What? Speaking as someone whose entire wheel has flown off in the dead of night in west Texas and had to walk 4 hours to find someplace open, this is disturbing to me. We travel in the middle of no where in the middle of the night too often to make me comfortable with this so I will have to see if mine does. But now that I think about it, unless it is mounted under the vehicle it doesn’t because I think I have 3rd row folding seats. If not, I guess we need to get a can of the tire fix it. OMG!!!!! That is so so SO scary! Did your cell not work? Was it prior to cell phone days. Holy moly! I can't count the number of times I have had a flat tire. And we keep good tires on our cars. But nails, screws and other hardware keep showing up in our tires and causing flats. So there is no way I would drive without a spare tire onboard. On the mustang the spare hung under the car snug up to the trunk. On my jeep the floor to the cargo area lifts up to where the tire is. I call AAA to come change my tire if husband is not available. The girls learned how to change tires before they were allowed to drive and they both have been grateful for that. In fact each of them have been in the position of helping a man change his tire who did not know how. Love that! Me, too! I have easily had at least 10 flats in my life. I know how to change a tire and cannot imagine what I'd do without my spare. Wow. I had no idea that spares weren't sold any longer.

2019 Subaru Forester Sport has a spare. It is in a hidden compartment in the back. Not a full size but not really a donut.

Well yes, the point of roadside assistance is that you get a tow if you need one. I appreciate the level of self-sufficiency that leads people to want to change a tire on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere, but personally I think that's what cell phones are for! Until you are in an area with no reception! This. My car will use satellite to call 911 from just about anywhere. I had to call them once to have them send my husband to come save me when I had a flat in the middle of nowhere at midnight. Fortunately, I knew the 911 operator because I felt like an asshole for calling for a flat tire but there was nowhere even visible, I was in n the country. No spare. It didn't even occur to me that it wouldn't have one. I dont think I ever checked.

I'm not sure I would be comfortable without a spare. I have had 2 flat tires in the past year - the first was going to a University that, frankly, isn't in the best area of town. From what the roadside assistance folks told me, they have had so many people leave without paying that most of the local services won't go onto campus anymore, so another mile and I might have had to change the tire myself (which I could do in a pinch but would rather not do)! The second time, a piece of sheet metal that fell off another vehicle literally sliced my tire open. I was on the Interstate during rush hour and managed to pull over into a emergency lane right at an on-ramp. That one was terrifying - both what could have happened and the speed of cars zooming by me. Bless the policeman who sat behind me with lights going while I waited for roadside assistance and they changed my tire. Getting the car onto a tow truck from that location would have been really difficult. In both cases, if I had not had a spare, I might have been in a real pickle.

That is so so SO scary! Did your cell not work? Was it prior to cell phone days. Holy moly! It really was, the car was out of control but DH handled it well and pulled over safely. It was pre cell phone days and we were outside of Abilene, Tx in the middle of the night. (Of course, my car had a car phone but we weren’t in that one). I don’t blame people for not pulling over, but police officers passed as well, even while it was raining. They might have rules about driving people anywhere but it would have been nice if they checked to make sure we were okay at least so that was disappointing. And who ever heard of a wheel actually coming off? Funny thing was, when we returned home to Lubbock the next week a wheel came flying at us from the oncoming lane. We’ve never seen it before or since. But we often drive in the middle of no where in between small towns and hours from anyone we know. So even if we got phone service, we are hours from anyone that can help. But I checked and we do have a spare under the car so I feel better. And now that I know that flat tire spray works so well I think I will store some in our cars anyway, faster and safer for the side of the road, especially in the dark.

I have not heard of new cars being sold without spare tires. I myself own a 20 year old Honda Civic LX that I adore and hope to keep for many more years. It came with a spare. I think it is foolish to drive without a spare tire. To me it's like going to sea without a life raft. Well, not that bad. One of my motto's is "Be prepared". Okay, so it's the boy scout motto but it's an important one. From these various stories we can see-you never know what's going to happen out there on the road.
You could end up in a place you didn't expect that doesn't have cell service. Your tire could end up getting absolutely shredded from no fault of your own to where the stuff in the can (don't know what it's called) doesn't work. All sorts of scenarios can happen that we can't predict.
Before we were allowed to drive me and my 3 siblings were taught how to change a tire by my father. I taught my son how to do it so that he knows how. I think it's a skill everyone should know and it's very easy to do. New technology is fine but when it comes to something as simple as a spare tire in my mind it's always safer to have a back up plan in place. In this case, a spare tire, is a great back up plan! Sure, having the foam in a can, the ability to call for help with a cell phone is terrific. But having that spare tire is what I want knowing I can save myself.

My 2012 Kia Soul did not come with a spare. They offered a spare tire kiy a few years layer, so we had that installed. If I got a glat, I would call AAA, but I would rather have them come change my tire than have to be towed for a damn flat.

my 2018 honda civic does not have a spare tire. It does have a fix a flat kit. Honestly I'm a little grumpy about it. I've considered buying one, but the whole kit is pretty expensive.

The vehicle we have been looking at to replace mine does not offer a spare. If we get it, I will get my own spare and carry it. We live in a rural area and I’ll be damned if I am going to get stranded somewhere with 3 kids waiting on roadside assistance. I can change the tire myself and be on my way. Or worse yet have to wait to be towed and figure out what to do with 3 kids and their car seats/boosters.
