I'm glad her info and pictures are recovered! My DD had the same problem when her iPad was stolen and she thought she lost all of her pictures from Israel.
iCloud is great, but it's still a good practice to back up all your devices regularly - to a hard drive, to the cloud, to a flash drive.

I love iCloud!!! But I'm a little OCD, so I also back pictures up to Amazon Photos and Google Photos. Surely they won't all crash at once.

So glad your daughter was able to get her photos and everything. We personally do not like iCloud. We back up to our laptops, and then back up that also. I just got a new phone about four weeks ago, and I was able to get everything on the new phone very easily from my laptop back up.

I don’t urgently use it, but feel as though I should be. I’m signed up to take a Cloud class tomorrow. I’d love to hear your take on why not.

That's great! My husband was in New Zealand for a work trip a few weeks ago and went out on his boee's boat and dropped his phone into the ocean. We have samsung galazy phones (android?) so he lost all his pictures! He didn't back them up to his computer. Don't know if samsungs can be backed up to anything other than a computer. I know nothing about stuff like that!

Android phones can be backed up to Verizon (or, probably, your provider, YMMV, but I have a Note8 with Verizon), Microsoft cloud, Google cloud, Amazon cloud, Dropbox, etc. ETA You can even back it up to iCloud, but there's a process. And an external hard drive, laptop, PC, thumb drive, etc.

I personally don't want all of my photos and documents out where someone else stores them. I want to be in control of my stuff. Especially after yet another data breach, I would rather keep it myself.
