What types of nails are there from salons and which do you prefer?

I prefer my own. All the others have a detrimental effect on your nails so I'd rather spend the time/money on getting/keeping my own in good condition, painted etc.

I go to a nail place every 2 weeks and get shellac gel polish... I put my hands under the uv light... I know its bad for them.. but I work in a factory.. I want them to look nice...
I know a lot of women around here do the dip powder... I dont like that because makes my nails super thick.. I cant grab anything with my finger nails when they are so thick...

I’ve had acrylic nails with polish for years now. I love the way they look but am really over the time and money commitment to maintain them. Haven’t made the leap to taking them off yet but I’m getting close LOL. The lady who does my nails is wonderful and she gets them pretty thin for acrylics. Overall I love them just not the time it takes to maintain.

I’ve been doing gel for 2 years and love it. I can get 3 weeks with them. Make sure you go to a good place that pays attention to detail. My place charges $25 for it and I think it’s a great deal.
I recently tried dip powder and like it too. It lasted 4 weeks and mine wasn’t thick at all. You are suppose to file down the powder, maybe they skipped that step? Only thing with dip was I was ready for the color change at week 3. It costed me $35 plus a few more dollars if I had a prior color that needed to be removed.
I would sugges try gel first and see how you like it.

I go back and forth between salon gel and painting my own. I don’t notice any detrimental effects from the gel. Other than sometimes I like changing my polish more than every two weeks...which is when I go back to painting my own.

I agree that dip powder, even done right, makes your nails thick. And although they feel normal, when I try to use my nails, it doesn’t work. I only get dip if I’m going to be on vacation overseas for more than a week. I generally try to otherwise do my nails at home, to save money. I do gel polish at home, which sometimes doesn’t last as long as when the salon does it, but my nails grow so quickly that I have to change my polish every two weeks anyway or they look super trashy.

I get gel nail fills every 28 days. That said the colour this time clashes with my skin and it looks like I have inflamed cuticles. I have not a single hangnail anywhere and they look inflamed. They are not. Bad choice. Last month they were stunning. I loved them!

I have colored acrylic on my nails and have it for years. I just recently started going to a new manicurist after 7 yrs with my old girl. I’m getting a new set next Friday and I’m going to gel. It’ll definitely be a change and hopefully save me some time and money without her having to drill so much acrylic off each time. They’re long and square right now with pink and pink glitter. If you saw them you’d probably ask “how do you do anything with those nails?”🙄

Traditional polish only. Everything else damages the hell out of your nails, and contributes to aging on the skin of your hands as well as upping your likelihood for cancer. No thanks.

I get a traditional mani/pedi with regular nail polish. I don't want to damage my nails. I *might* get shellac once or twice a year for vacation, but then I give my nails a good rest afterward with no polish.

I've had acrylics for years and just yesterday went back to my own nails. I do this every few years but I hate the way they look right now. I've always had very thin and weak nails even before I started going to the nail salon. They are paper thin right now but I'm tired of the time and money commitment.
Any suggestions on what to put on them to strengthen them?

I do dip. Mine are not thick at all. I go every two weeks (because of nail growth not issues with the dip) and spend about $35. Every 3 months or so my tech recommends a soak off and re-do because of lifting. But I have issues with lifting on all nail types because my nails absorb water so readily

I prefer short and natural with a slightly rounded tip. I’m considering getting a manicure the next time I go for my pedicure, but only having them buffed, no nail polish applied.

I do colored acrylics about every 3 weeks and have been doing for about 10 years without much of break. I love them!

I do dip, every three weeks. They remove the previous set every time. I probably could go every two weeks, but I don't have the patience for that schedule. I have very very thin, flexible nails, and have for my entire life. I actually prefer the little bit of thickness the powder adds, as without my nails would rip. It's really the only way I can have nice nails. I love all the color options and look forward to changing it up with each appointment.

I only do my toes, and I get gel. I don't like the look of thick nails, so I probably wouldn't do the dip, even though it can look cool.

How do they 'fill' dip nails? The thickness issue might be more of a what you're used to thing. When I get dip, it doesn't visually look thick when you look at my nails, but I can't use my nails the way I normally can. For example, peeling off a sticker from a package is extraordinarily difficult with dip nails, but I can do it with gel polish or regular polish. You can fill dip nails, but I don't know any nail tech around me who does. From what I understand, you have to file down as much of the existing color as possible, so what you're left with is a nail with only a couple layers on it instead of completely removing the dip product. Then you redo the a layer or two and reseal.

Aside from using a UV light to cure (which many polishes allow you to use an LED instead), what would increase your likelihood for cancer?

I do my own gel and am not really worried about 60 seconds under an LED lamp every 2-3 weeks. If you do your own you can minimize or eliminate damage to the nail plate just by being patient with removal. I don't get my nails done at salons, ever.

I got a manicure once, for my sister's wedding. I didn't like the feel of going from no nails to length, it was awkward. I do my own nails weekly

When I do it, I get the gel polish. It last a couple of weeks. I don't do them often or for long. I like it when I do them though.

Any suggestions on what to put on them to strengthen them? I started doing something last summer that has changed my nails and made all the difference. i file my nails in a rounded shape about every three days. MAKE SURE to file in ONE direction ONLY. Does that make sense. I also use cuticle sticks to gently push back the cuticles or trim them out if necessary. I no longer get hangnails nor do I get split nails. My nails seem to grow much quicker and are strong as hell. I also make sure to use some type of hand cream and massage into the cuticles at least once a day.

I just took off my acrylic nails yesterday after years of getting them done (acrylic with gel polish for the long lasting thing). Going to give them a rest and then make a decision about what I want to do with them, so the timing on this thread was great! Thanks!

I get a manicure weekly and pedicure every 3-4 weeks.
Although I love the dip, I hate the removal process and it damages my natural nail.
A weekly manicure is a pain, but I enjoy the look of nicely manicured hands/nails.

LOL) I've had dip nails done in probably 10 salons in 3 different states, and I've never had that as an option. Not sure if it matters either way, although it would save some time! I usually go every 2-3 weeks, and finally found a great place locally that I love 2 weeks ago. They are not thick and didn't chip or lift at all. I could go 3 weeks, but if I do that, I'm going to have to file them because they are too long!
