Why the hell do parents let their kids kick the seat in front of them? How are you that oblivious?

I would be tempted to ask if they would like to switch seats with me so I could kick their seats. Rude, rude, rude.

Are they on their phone? Some parents are so zoned out when they get on their phone.

I wouldn’t care what zone a parent was in, they should still be able to parent. That behaviour infuriates me. From the child AND the parent!

I just experienced that at a hockey game. Luckily I could move over.
I didn't want to make a scene, because the kid was on my grandson's hockey team. We were all at a pro game.

It’s not just kids. Adults suck too. I was at a comedy show last weekend in a large venue and the rude woman next to me spread her legs out wide into my space and jiggled her leg up and down like a crack addled hamster for two hours. I stuffed my handbag in between us because it was so wretched.
Little kids don’t always fully control their bodies... they don’t realize it’s making someone else nuts... it’s really up to the adults to have some control but if they aren’t paying attention to their own behavior I know they aren’t paying attention to junior’s behavior either.

Exactly! It’s up to the kid’s parent (or whoever is with them supervising) to point out how that behavior is affecting others, how annoying it is, and to just KNOCK IT OFF already!

When the parent doesn't parent I will turn around and do it for them, "Please stop kicking my seat. Now". If you're not gonna parent your kid then someone has to do it for you. I'm not going to be made uncomfortable, because you're too weak to say "STOP" to your widdle snowfwake.

I hate this too! I always say something. I don't care if they get mad. It's so rude and if the parents aren't going to teach them, I will. Signed, A Friendly Kindergarten Teacher

Kids will be kids......that's why they are given parents to guide them. I’ve told kids to stop before. And now, if a parent were to say "kids will be kids" in response, I’m going to add on "that’s why they have parents to teach them."

I agree. Recently we went to eat and we got sat in a booth..this kid was standing up looking over into our booth area talking non stop and then he started playing with my hair...with his STICKY hands!

Just in case parent is oblivious and/or preoccupied I'd simply turn around and ask the kid politely to stop kicking my seat. If that doesn't work, I reserve the right to escalate to death-mom-stare and beyond if necessary.

We were at a play last week and the person behind us didn't kick, but did unwrap some hunk of cellophane for literally 10 minutes. Not just a mint wrapper - that's understandable. This was heavy-duty crackly stuff and it went on and on and on.

Kids will be kids......that's why they are given parents to guide them. I've been told by a parent that kids will be kids. So remember the retort for next time. -- Usually I'll give one look at the kid and if behavior doesn't stop, I ask them to please stop whatever it is they're doing. jjjjj

Adults suck too. My DD just flew overnight to Europe and I asked if she got any sleep because they were hitting the ground running. She said no because the lady behind her kept kicking her seat. I asked and she said it was a woman not a child.
One thing I warned her before she left was to be aware of others - planes, hotel rooms hallways etc. Be quiet, don't slam doors etc. I always taught my DDs to do this.

Oh HELL no! That would have resulted in me losing my shit on people.....I mean, my hair is long and straight and pretty boring and not styled, but NO strange kid is allowed in my personal space to touch it!

I am seriously hyperventilating at the thought! I bloody hate it when a kid is kicking my seat. I usually start off with a couple of glares, hoping that the parent/s will notice and do the right thing. If that doesn't work I will ask them nicely to stop kicking. Or else I put my arm over the back of my chair so they can't kick.
I went to an event with a friend's husband and son once, and the son kept swinging his legs and kicking the seat in front. I spent the whole day telling him to stop kicking the seat, it was so stressful! And then I wondered why no other parents ever seem to tell their kids to stop doing it when they're sitting behind me.

That would have stressed me out to no end. I don't understand parents. Any parent trying hard gets a pass from me, but any parent ignoring the problem does not. You were very patient, freecharlie. NoWomanNoCry I'm surprised I didn't see your story in the news! I cannot even imagine!
