First off, I am generally not a grumpy person. There are people in my office who are ALWAYS grumpy. I mean day in and day out. They can't answer a question without coming across like you're annoying them and they don't smile or do any pleasantries at all. I am talking like "good morning" or "have a nice evening" type of thing.
What is up with that? We don't deal with the public; we're just a self-contained unit. How dang hard is it just to say "good morning" to someone? 50 people don't say that to you - just the 5 or so people working in your area. I don't get it.
My old manager left the company today and she told me to take care of her one employee who was left. That employee is nice when she wants something, but is otherwise super grumpy (i.e., nasty) or just plain ignores you. She's even mean to her adult (30s) kids. "What do you want?" she asks them when they call and it's not in a nice tone at all. She's not the only one. There are quite a few who just are plain ugly.
How spanking hard is it just to say "good morning?"

I am not grumpy at work, but I kind of don't like to respond to "good morning". Just get settled in and ignore me, we'll talk when we have something to say. I love the co-workers that just come in, sit down and don't say anything.
I will always answer, and I will always good morning you if we make eye contact. But if not, I'm just going my desk and logging in.
I do, do end of the day or weekend pleasantries, but good morning is not my thing.

I'm with you on this Really Red. It's such a simple thing to exchange pleasant "good morning"s, and I think it helps set the tone for the day. |

My coworkers are of the four-legged variety and I thoroughly enjoy them. One is needy and the other can be grumpy at times. It kind of makes me laugh.
I think that some people just have had grumpiness or a bad attitude for a role model for years and they don't see it as their problem. Take it or leave it. I do avoid those people though.

The company I work for is in the process of shutting down so yes, most of us are pretty grumpy. I recently got a new job lined up so I’ve been in a better mood but I have to finish out this shutdown to receive my severance.
Before the news of the shut down? Unless I had a particularly rough night of sleep I was usually in a decent enough mood. I’m not an overly chipper person in general but I don’t act annoyed with coworkers.

I work in a building where we greet each other - even the people who are the known grumps will take part in that pleasantry. I actually really like almost all of my coworkers, so it's pretty easy to be social with them.

I say good morning/hi to everyone. There are probably 100+ people on the floor I work on. 75ish are our department. There is one woman who won’t even make eye contact passing in the hall. She works in the same department as me! We don’t work directly with each other but come on!

I think most grumpy people at work are so because they work for someone who is grumpy to them, and it may be something only they see so you can’t judge their boss on your own interactions with them.

Do you work in my office?! We have one of those. And like you, we don’t deal with the public. There are 4 women in 80 employees, and she is just *ugh.... the unhappiest person ever.

I'm only grumpy during one shift due to a lazy co worker. He talks too much, does not pull his weight and acts like the boss. I'm too old to deal with his shit anymore so I am going to see if I can resign from that shift. My sanity is worth more to me than the $$ I'm going to lose.
It isn't hard to say Good Morning. Do you think they are happy to be at work?

Common courtesy. If you are an adult, you respond appropriately to a co-worker's greeting. The described situation would tick me off and I would be grumpy in a hurry.

People like that are very unhappy within themselves, and nothing can change that. I worked with a woman like that, and she did it in a sickly sweet condescending way, which made it even worse.

No. I could not handle being grumpy that much. I have worked with some grumps. Would hate to feel that way all the time and sorta feel sorry for them even though they are a giant PITA to work with.

We're always trying to teach the kids to be polite and say, "Good morning." It would be crummy if we didn't set the example!
Somehow DS13 hasn't gotten the memo. Major teen grumps going on there.

I come in a couple hours after everyone else and greet with good morning so everyone knows I'm there, so they can begin giving me stuff to do. I have a couple of grumpy wo workers. We kindly (or maybe not) refer to them as Eeyore. I guess its all in a day's work. And we all work with the public.

No, in general I can be kind of grumpy sometimes (I mean come on I have a lot going on) but at work I am super positive and upbeat. I don't even have to try it just comes naturally, it's kind of freaky. I guess I just really like what I do.

I am usually content at work. If I am feeling out of sorts-not feeling 100%, I try to always be polite and pleasant.
In general, everyone has off days.
With that said, there is a whole other set of people, that are like this >>
Anywhere and everywhere....there are people who are chronically unhappy and miserable inside, they project their unhappiness and discontent through their persona, aura, behavior, tone, communication, and actions. It's a chronic state of being.
My Mother is this way. Always grumpy. Always on the defense about everything. Talking to her is not fun, because everything that she says, every reply, etc... is with a negative, grumpy, defensive attitude. She has always been this way, and the older she gets the worse she's gotten.

I always start off on the right food with a cheerful hello to everyone, but someone usually throws a problem at me within the first 3 minutes (sometimes before I’ve even logged on!) and it’s all downhill from there.

My office is not grumpy in general. We all exchange good morning and goodnights. Sort of sound like the Waltons lol. The one grumpy person insists she is not grumpy the rest of us just annoy her. She hates her job, feels like she has too much to do but watches youtube videos most of the day. She hasn't wised up to the fact if you are wasting time on line the boss gives you more to do since you obviously don't have anything to do.

I work with great people now and truly appreciate that. We laugh every day.
I have no patience for grumpy people. (Hello, ex-husband!)
But I REALLY have no patience for people who cannot engage in basic social pleasantries. For pete's sake, just be a decent person to others.

I am seldom grumpy at work and in general our office is very pleasant. However, I’m not always a Good morning kind of person. Understand that while you’ve been there for an hour I’m still frazzled because I’ve just spent the morning corralling kids, trying to get everyone where they need to be with lunches and books and stuff, them I’ve sat in crazy traffic for an hour and I’m at my stress limit by the time I get to my desk. Just let me take my coat off and breathe for a few minutes first and if I just say hi and not good morning that should be fine,
I used to work with one busybody who would announce good morning very loudly whenever someone came in and make a point of looking at the clock, as if to make sure everyone was aware of what time you arrived. It was very comical and also annoying.

I am not a "Good Morning" kind of person, but I do it anyways and not grumpily. I would be much happier just to get to my office and then exchange Good Mornings... But I just go with the flow, no biggie.
The only person that bugs me to no end in the morning is a nurse that works next to me in her office. I swear that woman listens for me to come in by my keys. Then she is hollering from her office my name and something to go along with it.. I just throw out a good morning and get in my office before she starts her 45 minute greeting. AND she is like that all day. She says she is very busy but she spends all day spinning stories and she is the one upper and knows everything gal. Oye... now she can make me grumpy..

Nope, I have no need to be. I work at my own pace and can do what I want when I want, as long as it all gets done when it needs to be done. I work by myself most of the time so I don’t have anyone else’s bad mood rubbing off on me.
When I worked at my last FT position before being self employed, I was crabbier then but it was mostly due to repeatedly having to work with a steady stream of crabby, ignorant people day in and day out who expect you to continually fix their stupid mistakes. I don’t know if I could ever go back to a job like that. I’d probably hurt somebody.
ETA: While not exactly the same thing, my DD wakes up so grumpy almost every single day. The kid is an absolute Debbie Downer! She hates getting up, hates getting dressed, hates going to school. Every.Freaking.Day. Ugh. I hated school too when I was her age (and try VERY hard not to project that) but I don’t recall my mom or anyone else having to practically pry me out of bed every day.

I work in a law office and we have a super friendly receptionist who is fantastic but... Every single night when she leaves she has to do a round of the office and say good night to everyone. She goes from office to office, good night Jack, good night Jill, good night Sue on and on through 34 people. It's like the Waltons. It's like she is going off to War rather than her house in the Burbs. We will see her again within 15 hours. It drives me stark raving mad. Usually at the end of the day everyone is immersed in something and she is interrupting everybody. I know it drives the lawyers crazy but she is so fantastic in other ways we just let it slide. If she ver breaks that habit many will be jumping for joy.

no. i like my job. i am not micromanaged. i like our clients. sometimes a few of those clients try my patience but that's when i get extra nice just to push through it.
