After checking out the new alphabet cutting dies I started to remember all the stencils I used to have. All that time spent tracing and hand cutting each and every letter with an exacto knife. Boy I sure don’t miss those days or all those knicked fingers! No wonder I had such huge stash of alpha stickers and page toppers. I think I will go kiss my big shot and cameo machines now.
What techniques do you remember slaving over back in the day?

I remember fussy cutting titles too. It was the reason I bought a cutting machine. Definitely don’t miss those days!

I remember dry embossing with a stylus on cs sandwiched between two stencils. Some of those stencils I had hand drawn on pad backing and then cut with an Xacto knife.

I remember all of these.
Adding: decorative scissors. I used to create borders with them. I taught classes in how to use them. I cringed when people used them to cut their photos.

Dry embossing with a stylus on a light box was my first thought! Such tedious work.

Dry embossing with a stylus on a light box was my first thought! Such tedious work. And the noise the paper and stylus made, oh it makes me cringe just thinking about that horrid little squeaking.

Not a technique, but trying to find paper that wasn't pastel in the early years was rough.

I never could make Coluzzles work. I gave them away.
I remember being thrilled with the LSS's dies we could use. Getting a Quickutz was the ultimate to me. I still love them, even with my electronic die cutter.

Oh yes, I remember it all well!
The first thing that came to my mind was covering naked chipboard alphas with patterned paper and sanding the edges. Made such a mess but I sure did love the look of it back then lol.

I still have my alphabet templates and a ton of eyelets...they don’t take up much space.
What about the Journaling Genies? Still have those too. 😎

OMG the eyelets. I got an eyelet "setter"-still have it lol. Instead of the hammer, it was one big "THUNK!" Still not sure why I thought they were good. Had to have every color.

I still love eyelets and have a huge collection. I mostly use them on the holes at the top of tags.

Real life paper scrapbook magazines. I would spend hours flipping through them at Barnes & Noble, in the car/plane, or sitting on the beach on vacation.

I tried paper piecing from loads of templates I saved. They never looked right. I was basically a failure at using any templates or stencils because they took up so much time. Maybe that's my hesitation with "masks" (aka templates) that are very popular in mixed media and scrapbooking. BUT this time, I don't want to invest into the products you need to have in order to have cool effects.

I cringed when people used them to cut their photos. Guilty. That was what the cool people at the scrapbook store were doing in 1995.

I still have my Coluzzle shapes. I loved my journaling genie. I could not write in a straight line to save my soul.
Before I bought any alpha stencil I would type what I wanted in word and use that as my template.

The fussy cutting of titles, hours and hours spent on that task. I did not have any templates but would mirror image the title and print it out and the glue to the back of the paper and then hand cut, I have never forgotten those days and do a happy dance with every alpha pack I buy.
Also trying to get that shape boss cutter from Fiskars to work with those templates, it was a huge struggle of trying to find the right pressure, angle, mat and paper to get that thing to cut and not rip the paper. I tossed that thing years ago but my kids still use the templates a bit so not all a loss.

Fussy cutting scripty fonts with an exacto knife.
Paper piecing. I loved all the kits. Some with the prices already cut out, but most with patterns you traced first. The Paperkins paper doll stencils. I still have those in a binder somewhere.

Dry embossing with a stylus on a light box was my first thought! Such tedious work. I loathe decorative scissors. And yes, I am guilty of having used them directly on my photos. I need to burn those early scrapbooks. 🔥

Punch art. I had to have allllll the punches in every size back in the day! A few years ago I dumped about 80% of them at a rummage sale and haven’t missed them at all. I did keep my Paperkin punches because I thought DD might have fun with them someday as well as the basic shape ones (circles, squares, hearts etc.) because I do use them still from time to time.
