DH are having our first getaway in years. We have 48 hours in Carlsbad. Any suggestions on where to eat? We are going to Old Town on our way to the airport because we enjoy it there.
Parameters: we don’t like seafood, and for our lifestyle/budget, Cheesecake Factory is a “nice” restaurant. We don’t like foodie food, just well prepared, tasty “normal” food. We love Mexican food. Any local favorites to recommend?

Decent Mexican can be found at Norte or Las Olas. 264 Fresco has good un-fussy Italian. For BBQ or a burger, Park 101 is delicious and has a fun vibe. If you like beer, try Barrel Republic, which has a huge selection of self-serve beer on tap. Coyote Bar & Grill has decent food and live entertainment (usually pretty good) on the outdoor patio. For breakfast I highly, highly recommend Cafe Topes, or head up the 101 to the Beach Break in Oceanside. Other than the Beach Break, all these places are right in Carlsbad Village.
Oh, and it's strawberry season, so if you like them, head on over to the strawberry fields (Cannon exit off the 5) where you can either pick your own or just purchase them there (and check out the insane magenta ice plants that are in bloom at the Cannon offramp!).
Have fun!

Go to Campfire for the s'mores. Las Olas is a local favorite. Personally, I would head a little further north into Oceanside for tacos at Exhale. They are amazing. For breakfast/brunch/lunch, I recommend Swami's in Carlsbad or Petite Madeline Bakery in Oceanside. Another favorite with everyone is The Yellow Deli, although it is a little further inland and may not be open depending on your 48 hour window.

I like Tip Top German deli just down the street from the outlets. Nothing fancy and the side dishes are too salty, but the entrees are huge and yummy.

We have eaten at Las Olas and it was good after a long day at Legoland. If you walk down the block, there are stairs that take you to the beach which is especially nice at sunset.

There is a little place right by the beach in Carlsbad called Norte. Tasty Mexican food.

Your post is making me miss home a bit. Never really appreciated the beach much even though I lived nearby in Oceanside for over 10 years and before that, up the freeway a bit for most of my life in Orange County. Now I guess I'll be a "river-rat" here in Pittsburgh.

Thanks ladies! We’re excited to try several of these places out! I liked seeing the same names again and again. I spent much of my childhood in Oceanside with my grandparents, but we mostly frequented IHOP and Coco’s 😂 it will be fun to experience as an adult

Have you ever been to The Flower Fields? Its so beautiful and a great time to go. Oh yes the strawberries too!
We were at the outlets once in Carlsbad and ate at Blaze and really enjoyed it. I know it is right there at the outlets but the reviews were great and it was really good pizza.
Enjoy your time away!

We’ll be there tomorrow. Can’t wait!

A Richard Walker pancake house just opened. It is on the east end of Carlsbad, off of Palomar Airport Rd near Bressi Ranch. People rave about their downtown San Diego location.
ETA - I also like Beach Plum Cafe on El Camino. Good breakfast/brunch menu.

If you're in old town I really like Fred's Mexican Cafe. There's also a place across the street. The name escapes me, but you can't miss the woman outside making tortillas on the corner. I've seen it featured on TV. Any peas know what I'm talking about? Gonna go try and google for ya ....

There are lots of great suggestions here.
Jay's Gourmet Seafood and Pizza is a great little Italian place. Their pasta is amazing. All their sauces and dressings are house made. Swami's Cafe is good for lunch, and we like the Daily News Cafe for breakfast. Barrelhouse Republic is good if you like beer.
Have fun and enjoy! Carlsbad is a great little town.

You should get a Julian pie! In the parking lot next to Tip Top (mentioned above) is a little farmer's market type store. They carry Julian pies. We always stop by there and pick one or two up. So good...well, if you love apple pie!

I concur with the suggestions above. If you are looking for breakfast burritos, Señor Grubbys on Carlsbad Village near the train tracks.

Peas! We’re so full! We landed, picked up field strawberries, went to the flower fields, hit the German deli for lunch, picked up a Julian pie, went to Miguel’s for dinner (the place by McDonalds near the fields), had thrifty ice cream for lunch, and we’re doing Norte for lunch tomorrow, as well as a yet to be determined breakfast spot. The peas have not steered us wrong!! We’re going to bed fat and happy 😂
