I’m currently spending an extended time in FL, and this week I finished taking a Mah Jongg class. Although it’s a lot to learn and keep straight, I am loving it! I want to play all the time!
I hail from Illinois, and I really never hear much about MJ there, but maybe it didn’t register since I wasn’t a player. I hope I can find people to play with. In my head, I guess I think of MJ being most popular on the East coast.
So I’m curious—any other Mah Jongg players here in Pealand? And where are you? I’m curious if my theory is correct.
ETA: I play the American version. There is also a Chinese version (I think that’s what was played in a Crazy Rich Asians).

I don't play but I grew up in the NYC area and I remember ladies playing at the pool I went to in the Summer time. So your theory about it being an East coast thing might be correct. I can see myself playing; I was always fascinated by the tiles.

My girlfriends and I play mahjongg several times a year. Nothing hardcore as we just play for nickels and dimes, mostly just because we want to meet up and shoot the breeze. We play a simplified version where honors, flowers and dragons have no value. I’m in Chicago and I don’t see this game as popular here except in SE Asian communities. I have family in CA whom I visit often and it’s very popular there.

In So Cal and my mom plays all the time. She is Taiwanese so it was something she grew up with. My dad (American) also plays if they need him.

I have friends who have a group and play twice a month. We are in Houston but they are all former expats and learned the game while overseas. They tried to teach me but I was hopeless, so I stick with bridge.

Heard of the game but never been around anyone that plays it. Totally foreign to me. My group (at one time) are Bunko players.. Love Bunko.. (the dice game)

I love playing MahJongg. Years ago I was in a group and we played every Friday. Currently no group but my husband and I play, just the two of us. We change-up the rules a little since there’s only 2. I live in New York (Long Island).

I don't, but there is a group of ladies (Caucasian) who meet up to play at our local breakfast place. I always think it's such a cool looking, sophisticated game. I'd love to learn but I'm terrible at complicated things.

I play MahJonng. I'm in Oklahoma. My Gramma taught me as a kid. There are quite a few MahJonng groups around here. We also have a large Vietnamese, Korean, and Thai populaion though that I'm sure influenced it. I don't know why you would think it's an East Coast thing.

My friend has a game night every Wednesday, where we play pretty serious games, but we occasionally play something different like mahjong.
We play her family’s bastardized Filipino/Chinese version, ha. There’s always a family version!

I only play the solitaire computer version. Growing up I had a girlfriend who’s mom played in Chinatown. One time we stopped by because she had to get something from her mom. It was interesting to watch, but I never learned, though I wish I knew how.

I play the solitaire version on my iPad or iPhone. I do too ! Very very different from the 4-player tile game. I consider MahJongg more like Poker, but with a lot more suits/pisdinle hands.

My mom played every week and I learned from that. I used to play, but haven't in a few years. Though I would love to do so. I play the American version through the National Mah Jongg League. The version that I play is an excuse to play some Maj and socialize.

I don’t here in WA. But, when I lived in So Cal I was invited to play with a group of ladies. It was so much fun, but we ended up moving to WA before I really got the hang of it. I’d love to take a class and play more...I’ll need to look for a class.

I have played MahJonng. We had a set when the kids were teenagers, and played as a family. DH traveled a lot to Hong Kong while working, and bought our set while there. I haven’t played in years, however, and gave the set to one of the kids. And we live in Tennessee.

My parents used to play with friends and we often played as a family growing up. I have their set which originally dates from the 1920s.
Mum and Dad picked it up when they were living in London after the war and then emigrated to New Zealand.

I saw some folks on our cruise last fall playing it and commented that it looked really cool. DH took that to mean that I wanted to learn to play. So, he bought me a very nice set for Xmas and I have no freakin' clue how to play it and neither does anyone else I know

My cousin is married to a Filipino girl and her grandmother lives with them. Lola, as she's called, plays it every Friday night with her friends.

Yes, correct; however, I have never played in person so I don't know any different. LOL! I LOVE the matching tiles. And I will get you the name of my app in a bit. On my computer right now.

I use to play the individual version of the game on my computer, but then the site went away and I could never find a good "free" version and lost interest because the free versions I found only would let you play like one or to levels and you had to start over. I'm in Colorado and have never head of group play.

I play online, but have never known or seen anyone playing it IRL. I'm in SC.
If there is any strategy or rules, I'm not familiar with them. I just like to match the tiles!

I learned in Japan and this was a big deal for a Gaijin to attend a parlour I mean scandalous but I played Pachinko and I wasn’t allowed to do that either.
Anyway I just play online mahjong now and love it. LAN and SAKURA are my favourite tiles.
