Ds’s junior prom is this weekend and dh and I are helping chaperones. I promised ds that I’d wear black and fade into the background 😆. Looking through my closet I found only this one black dress. Prom is formal, tuxes for the guys and long gowns for the girls. Some of the other chaperones will be wearing costumes (Alice in wonderland theme) not sure about the rest. Besides this dress my choices are a short sundress or go shopping (not high on my to do list this week). The back of the dress is unzipped here, I was supposed to be changing for a little league game (where I would be overdressed 😆) and didn’t want to find dh to zip it but it does have short “streamers” that go from the top of the zipper to my waist. I would also add a pashmina in red or pink. Wdyt?

You look lovely in it, and given how formal the prom is, it seems like a perfect choice.

Dissenting here. Yes ,it is too prom like/ dressy for you to be wearing at your child’s prom.

I think it's perfect. It's dressy enough that it fits with the feel of a prom, but subdued in color and style so it doesn't look like you're trying to get attention.

nope, not too fancy. Love it! I always chaperone prom with a group of my teacher friends and we like to do fancy hair and makeup and dress up. It's a lovely dress, but it would NOT be mistaken for a prom dress a student would wear. Black isn't a popular color right now and prints and two pieces and things with cutouts are super in.

I think you look fantastic in that dress, but I'm with @megmc in thinking that unless it's at a ritzy venue, it's a bit too formal to wear as a chaperone for the junior prom. A lot of the girls at our junior proms don't even wear long gowns.

It looks too fancy to me also. I think most chaperones don't go formal. They usually just wear a nice dress or pants.

I would wear something more like this personally, with some fabulous shoes. I personally wouldn't wear anything that could pass for an actual prom dress. You look fabulous in that dress though.

I’m wondering if those who think it’s too fancy have ever chaperoned a prom? I just finished my yearly stint this year and wouldn’t bat an eye at your dress. I think it’s perfect! Most of our girls wear floor length dresses, definitely not knee length. Prom is very formal here

I have chaperoned prom several times. Chaperones dress up for prom. If I had a figure for that dress, I’d wear that! It’s gorgeous and gorgeous on you. Wear it and have fun. You’d fit in as chaperone for our prom.

We chaperone from every year. We dressed down the first year and the kids were so disappointed. This year we got invited to dinner too. A little weird, but fun.
We always get pictures too, why not have a fun night and get glammed up right?

It definitely would work to chaperone prom here. Not too dressy at all

Love it! Think it's perfect for prom. My kids prom the teachers chaperoned and there were some fancy, sparkly teachers I don't think it's too fancy, the black kind of simplifies it for me.

I chaperone every year. That would be too fancy at our prom, but it’s teachers who chaperone, not parents. The sundress would be more appropriate. I usually wear a non formal dress with flats, I have learned the hard way not to wear heels. —-But I always work the late shift which is a lot of standing/walking, sometimes doing chores and then I help tear down, but the earlier shifts aren’t fancier from what I can see.
That said, every prom is different and if formal is the norm, that is a very nice dress—not overall formal imo
Oh, and I should clarify, our prom is formal. The chaperones are not.

First off, you look fantastic in that dress!
Although prom in our area is formal; it's formal for the kids. Chaperones dress nicely, but not formal. Kids at our prom would look at a parent like they were crazy and gossip about so and so's mom acting like it's her prom.
Maybe that's a regional opinion but I will say that I would not wear a sleeveless dress to a high school event. A sleeveless dress gives off a sexy vibe that I just don't think is fitting for spending the evening with a group of students.
But again, you look great and I hope you get a chance to go somewhere awesome in that dress!

Thank you all for the feedback and compliments, you confirmed that my waffling back and forth is completely reasonable Your feedback combined with my hatred has made me tentatively decide to go with the dress. I did ask one of the teachers who has chaperoned past proms and is doing this one as well. She said "I think it's fine. It is formal but it doesn't look too young or anything. Mine is short but it's theme-based. I think people are going to be all over the board and since it's black it will just blend". Many of the chaperones/teachers are wearing costumes (white rabbit, mad hatter, queen of hearts) or theme based dresses (alice, etc). Me dressing in costume would likely be more embarrassing to ds so I quickly declined those. There's only 3 sets of parents chaperoning, the rest is teachers/staff. I'm still not totally convinced and if I find spare time (unlikely since I still have favors and decorations to finish up) I might end up at the mall this week. But I'm going to try to get this dress hemmed (even in the 3" heels I had on the dress touches the floor..... #shortpeopleproblems ). I do wish I had a way to cover my arms, gonna go google ways to tie a pashmina since I don't think a shrug will look right

I think the dress looks great! You should wear it with some sort of wrap like you're planning. If your mall has Hot Topic, they have all sorts of Alice In Wonderland things.

I think it is perfect.. with the others going in costume and the kids dressed up... it blends right in.. not to informal but not over the top formal. It's beautiful!
