I just say "Thank you". My problem is that I learn how to do everything from YouTube. I guess that makes me a cheater. My process is to watch several DIY tutorials on how to make the thing I want to make - then I take bits and pieces of each of those and put my own spin on it. After I make my first one I feel confident in the process and can go crazy with brainstorming how to take it to the next level. I taught myself to sew when I was a kid. Cindy This does NOT make you a cheater. It makes you a life-long learner.

I have a variety of responses depending on what they've said.
1) If you only know the amount of swearing that went into this project...haha
2) I was inspired by my Grandma (she died when I was 2 but I loved her blankets therefore I learned to make them)
3) I'm glad it brings you as much joy as it brings me

I will usually answer that I've been sewing since I was 9 (I'm 62 now), and that I have a degree in Clothing & Textiles. There have been times when their response is to ask if I do alterations. My standard response to that is "No, but if you know of a good alterations person I would love to have their name as I don't even do my own alterations!" I love it. Somehow people thinking quilting is the same as tailoring. That would be a huge freaking no.

If I need to learn anything watching a video helps me immensely. You are still just as awesome cindytred

A gracious "thank you" with a smile always works.

I just say thank you and that I enjoy paper craft, especially card making - because that’s what people are usually commenting on.

I'm with those who say just answer with a Thank You and whatever the rest of the truth is.

I often tell people that a former coworker taught me to crochet. I usually mention that I find patterns on the internet. I really don’t do anything complicated, but I spend a lot of time picking out colors and projects that have a good final product.

I think people react this way because they themselves might not be creative and don't understand how others do it. I cannot draw. I don't see the shapes in the things that I am drawing that others do. If I really try, I can draw a few things okay, but I am always in awe of people who can just whip out a pen and go. I taught ten year olds for years who were far more creative than I will ever be. I just learned that some people have mad skills, some people take classes, and some people are just plain lucky.
