I just started watching a show on Amazon Prime called “Seatbelt Psychic” where the psychic, Thomas John, is driving a car and people get into the back seat and he does kind of an ambush reading on them. Sometimes he asks if they want or are open to a reading, sometimes he just tells them there is a spirit sitting next to them.
After watching two of these shows, I googled the guy because I’ve never heard of him. Not that I know much about psychics and should know his name, but I was curious. I read some things on his Wikipedia page that were upsetting to me. Prior to being a medium, he was a drag queen in Chicago. That doesn’t bother me, but the next thing I read was that he has 2 felony fraud convictions for renting out property he didn’t own. He would rent this property and abscond with the person’s deposit money. That sucks. Then apparently he owes a lot of money to an agency he hired to clean up his image after the fraud convictions. They did the work, but he hasn’t paid them. So this guy is a con.
I also read that 2 people from the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry set up a sting-like scenario where they pretended to be a couple in for a reading. They had people create fake Facebook pages with information purported to be about their lives. The 2 people were not aware of what the Facebook pages said so that when Thomas started telling them these things from the fake page, he couldn’t claim he was reading their minds because they had no idea what was on them.
So after reading all this, I was feeling pissy about the show and how when people like this are given publicity about being a “renowned” psychic, it creates so many opportunities for other scam artists to take advantage of people’s pain.
BUT, the things being said to these people who were in tears were all reassuring things about the loved one that had passed. By the time they got out of the car, they were feeling huge relief and saying this changed their lives.
Given that the end result is people feeling relief, letting go of any guilt, being reassured that their loved one is “with” them and guiding them through life, is this such a terrible thing? I went from being really irritated about the show to thinking well, it does make people feel much better and helps them move forward.
As as far as believing is psychic abilities, I would like to think I am open and smart enough to know that I don’t know everything about this world. That doesn’t make me either a believer or a hater...just open. But, wouldn’t there be a lot more focus on this from the scientific community if it was a real thing?

It’s too bad the network could not have done a little research and find out the facts about the guy.
I am unsure about psychics or mediums, but a gut like this certainly does not make me believe more.

I read “Let’s talk about PHYSICS. So did I and yes, I clicked because I enjoyed physics! I was the one of the worlds biggest skeptics about these things, if science can’t prove it, it didn’t happen but it was on my bucket list to go and experience it for myself so I do now have a few experiences. DIL and I went to a psychic reader about three years ago. She did the reading in her house and if you can imagine a spooky, dark, cobwebby, stuffed with furniture room, that was it. My DIL said she would have run away if I wasn’t with her. The psychic had us pick tarot cards, laid them out then she did palm readings. Her hands were cold but her thumbs, that she was touching our palms with, were hot and remained hot for the 20 minutes or so she held my hands. She had no idea who we were as my DIL just gave her first name on booking the session. I suppose she could have checked into DIL’s phone number then maybe checked social media but that would have been a lot of phaffing for little gain imho. Pretty much every darned thing the psychic said to both of us was accurate. She was saying things that made me think she had been living my life with me. DIL and I were both blown away. Even now, a couple of years later, I am still pretty euphoric about the experience and will be going back, probably later this year. In the cold light of day I take the view that I still don’t know if there is anything genuine in what she said or just that she is an expert at spinning a yarn and reading body language. I don’t mind, though, because I really enjoyed it! DIL and I next went to a show where a medium picks folk in the audience, saying he has a departed relative with him. DIL knew a couple of the people who were picked and vouched for how accurate the medium was. He didn’t ask for information, folk had to give yes or no answers. It was amazing and we went to his next show the following year which was equally as good and entertaining. He also does private sessions so . . . When I lost my sister two years ago, I thought this would be an ideal opportunity to see if he was a charlatan! He fell ill and couldn’t travel so we had a face time session. He cancelled twice on me and I admit to thinking he’d taken my money and was laughing but he did ring me on the third arranged session, which he didn’t know just happened to be my birthday. My DIL recorded the session. My deceased sister was as big a skeptic as me and had agreed to come to a session at some point, just so she could get me back on the skeptics path, but she passed before that could happen. DIL and I both think she was talking to the medium at the other end of the phone! He was telling me things she said that no one else could possibly know. They were just snippets of conversations we had had over the years when she stayed with me on holiday. He was so accurate about the minutiae of our conversations it was staggering. His description of her and how she passed were spot on, he mentioned members of my family by name - not “do you know someone with the initial P” but straight in with 3 names, their specific health issues etc. NONE of that info is in the public domain. My relatives are in their 70s and don’t use social media. He was speaking to me in the manner in which she would have spoken. It was uncanny. Again, in the cold light of day is he just a good story teller? How could he have said things to me that my sister said every time she was with me yet no one else knew? How did he know the 3 relatives names without beating about the bush? I can’t explain it. Did I feel good afterwards? You bet! I wasn’t doing this to make specific contact with anyone but to try and decide for myself if there could possibly be something in it. I still don’t know but you know what? I don’t care either because these people, when they are good, leave you feeling very uplifted and that has to be a good thing. Was this Derek Ogilvie? It sounds a bit like things I've seen of him. I am as skeptic as they come, but I find him fascinating.

@rvjl it was Luke Danskin. He’s not been on the road for quite a while due to his own health issues but his shows are really entertaining and interesting if he starts up again. We FaceTimed for 1/2-3/4 an hour and the time just flew by.

About 15 years ago, I was taking an adult education writing class. I had never met the teacher before. She was very witty and interesting. We did not socialize outside of class at all.
My parents happened to be staying with us at this time. One day at lunch, we sat around the table talking, and my mother, who was very interested in genealogy and family history, started talking about her grandmother. She went on and on about how strikingly beautiful she was, how she started a business in the 1800’s and had to put it in her husbands name because women couldn’t own a business. A woman before her time.
So later that day I go off to class, and the teacher starts talking about how she doesn’t talk about it much, but sometimes she sees people with you. She told us about a friend of hers who lost his wife. She ran into him one day with his son and the wife was “there” with them. She wanted to tell them, and reassure them that she was ok and with them, but she didn’t know how they would take it. So basically she said she doesn’t talk about her ability because it makes people uncomfortable.
After class she catches up to me on the way to the parking lot and asks, “did my story scare you?” I said no, or really, I thought it was interesting. She says that’s good, because I need to tell you that you have someone with you. It’s a woman who is strikingly beautiful, with stunning blue eyes. She was someone who was really ahead of her time. I think her name might be Sara? Don’t be scared, she’s protecting you. You’re very safe.
We were alone in the parking lot at 10 pm by this time, and the hairs literally stood up on the back of my neck. I was so stunned, I couldn’t speak. I finally managed to tell her that my great grandmother fit all those descriptors, except her name was ....Clara. There is no way this woman could have heard my mother’s story from lunch.
I was pretty freaked out at first, but after I thought about it, I like the idea that Clara has my back. And yes, I believe there are people out there who can see past the veil, and I also believe that there are a lot of fakers who take advantage of people.

I don't believe in any of it. But I do think it would actually be pretty cool to have a physics cabbie. Like, you get in, put on your seatbelt, tell him where you want to go and he starts talking about the laws of motion or asking you what you know about relativity. Then he breaks it down for you and you get out of the cab knowing more than you did before you got in.
This would be really cool. The French have a saying, "you'll go to bed less stupid." Anytime you learn something in the course of the day, you can say that you'll go to bed less stupid. Every passenger could go to bed less stupid that night, plus they get where they were going.
New business plan: since so many educators end up with second jobs, Uber could team up with teachers and promise not only a ride, but an educational lesson. They could call it Tuder or something.

A good friend of mine has been exploring her spiritual side, taking classes, meditating and such. She has come to realize she has this gift. I do think she is for real and legit.
On our last girls weekend (and we are 5 gals who get together twice a year, have for almost 10 years now) she had a few come through for the other girls. And not while we were there - she had been at home in her meditation room, contemplating on our weekend. She took a ton of notes, and while she was doing so, a rainbow appeared on her notebook (like the kind a prism would make with the sun shining through.) Except her curtains were closed and no prisms in the room anywhere. She took a photo to show us. Clear as day, across the notes she had been writing about the encounter. One of the gals had a cousin who's daughter took her own life. And while she (our medium friend) could have somewhat remembered that in the back of her mind, all the details she came out with were things she could not have known. It was amazing.
Nobody came for me, but on her drive up, she had a man mention a watch. A watch that was his that kept stopping all the time on the current owner. And that it was him stopping it. My dad had a beautiful gold watch they bought on their first cruise together. My mom currently has the watch. It keeps stopping on her. She's had the crystals fixed and it still stops. And it would be just like him to mess with it on her. This is also something I have never ever talked about with friends or anybody really. Could it be I'm reading into it? Sure! But I do believe.

In general, I think most of the tv psychics are full of it and are con artists. I think they prescreen the audience memebers, and dig around in their backgrounds. Those that they can get the most info are are “chosen” to be read on air.
I do believe some people have a legit gift. When I was in my last year of college, my roommate and I made friends with this girl. She was practicing Wicca, and it was absolutely fascinating to listen to her talk about it. She also enjoyed reading tarot cards for herself and other people (not saying Wicca and tarot reading go hand in hand, as I’m not sure they do). One night my roommate came home from hanging out with her, and she raves about the tarot reading this girl gave her. On and on about how specific it was about very odd things that they had never talked about. I was skeptical. But I wanted to do it!!!
So we set up a time and i had her and my roommate over on my side of our dorm room. She read my cards. And it was the weirdest and coolest thing. She nailed SO MANY THINGS. Things hat we had NEVER discussed. Things that you would not know by looking around my room. The one big thing that I remember was when she pointed out my baby fever. She said “What is with this obsession you have with babies right now? It is not time for you to have babies. They are not ready yet. Stop thinking about babies.” And I was totally obsessed with the idea of having a baby with my then fiancé. I was ready to start a family with him. But I was also headed off to grad school and logically knew it wouldn’t be a great time for a baby. I had never spoken about wanting babies right then, not even him. So weird.
I lost touch with her. I hope she is well. 🙂

" I have gone many times and believe that the mediums there are gifted. I have quite a few instances where the medium I saw was spot on. My uber skeptic Catholic dad was shocked when I told him about the passing of a great Aunt that I never knew - she passed in 73-74 when I was 7 or 8. Her death was due to an accident and her passing was unpleasant. The psychic knew details that made my dad go pale when I told him to confirm. Same psychic told me I was going to have twins before I was even married (they came 4 years later) and about my "bonus" - my daughter (10 yrs after the twins)- and how she was going to "trick" me into forgetting my birth control so she would be born. I am gong in July and cannot wait. It's a lovely little community, very peaceful place to spend the day. Yeah - I am a believer. |

I'm not a believer. The fact that some of these mediums are cheesy or felons doesn't help their cause either. Sorry but I'll have to take a Sheldon Cooper stance and say that mediums fall in the hooey and hocum category for me.

And it made me remember an incident in my local grocery store!!! I can’t believe I had forgotten this. The bagger was putting my cat food into a bag and the checker mentioned casually that I must have a lot of cats because I was stocking up (this was before I knew how crappy grocery store pet foods were) I responded that I had 2 cats. The bagger said, “You used to have 3 cats; this was the 3rd cat’s favorite flavor” as she held up one of the cans. I was mildly surprised because I had lost one of my 3 cats a few months before this. I said that I didn’t remember ever mentioning my 3 cats there before and she said that my little white kitty was there by my side at that moment. Chills.
Then the checker admonished her and reminded her she had been warned about talking about these things by their manager. I assured them that I was not upset and found it quite fascinating. I asked her to continue. She then told me that my grandmother, who loved cats, had brought the cat to me and was also standing there. More chills.
This bagger appears to have some sort of health issue - she has odd features and a great deal of facial hair, quite a beard really. She appears to be a little slow. But seeing this side of her fascinated me and I wanted to continue to talk to her more, but my groceries were loaded in the cart and I needed to leave so she could bag the next person. I didn’t want her getting into trouble because of our conversation.
I haven’t shopped in that store in ages. I think I will do a bit of shopping there to see if she still works there. She had been there for many years prior to this encounter. Would it be weird if I approached her? I found our quick conversation to be very reassuring and it gave me incredible peace to think that I might see my relatives and pets again.

It is stories like these mentioned here that keep me open to the possibility that some people do have an unusual gift. I think the preponderance of these so-called psychics are scam artists, but I think there are people with some abilities. They just don’t make a television career out of it. PenandInk, your story was awesome too. The “readings” or whatever you call them that are unsolicited and free from charge are the most amazing to me. |

Years ago, like 35 or so, I was pregnant for my first son. One of the women I worked with was having lunch with her mother, who had stopped in. I walked into the lunchroom and she immediately began to read me. Told me my baby would be healthy, that I would only have two children, both boys with curly dark hair. My coworker said she didn’t tell her I was pregnant and I wasn’t showing yet. After talking with some of the other employees I think she was real because they told me some of the things she’d told them that were spot on.
Then again, most of us have had at least one occurrence in our lives that we just felt like we shouldn’t do something, did it anyway and soon regretted not listening to our “gut”. IMO it’s sort of the same physic ability only we discount it.

And it looks like this rideshare show has employed a scammer, which is sad to me, but they have only shown people who have been really relieved and happy after the readings. There was a pastor that bothered me. And I have to admit, it bugs me that these people just get in the car and are dropped off randomly, no fee changes hands and there are no directions given as to where they think they are being taken. I need more realism there. |

I believe some truly have the gift of sight. I also believe that in this day and age with the internet, you can find out just about anything about anyone beforehand and give them a "reading".

This was pretty much where I was coming from before I had my sessions. While we were waiting in the atmospheric room for the lady psychic to come back to us, my DIL and I were whispering that she probably had a sophisticated internet set up in the next room. but she didn’t know who we were, certainly she didn’t have a clue who I was and what she charged us - less than $10 each for an hour in total - wouldn’t have been worth her while surfing for the amount of accurate information she gave. Likewise, the FaceTime session was so spot on about teeny details that were just passing comments my sister and I had made to each other, none of which had been spoken about to other folk because they were of no consequence, never mind never put online, that made me open to believing there had to be something to what he was saying other than having investigated me beforehand. He certainly could have found a few things out with a bit of investigation and spun a good story but to be pin point accurate on so many things has left me with an open mind. Who knows?! |

Many many years ago I worked with a group of people that would get together and go to this western bar on Friday nights. Wives, husbands, and significant others were there too. There was one woman who was always in attendance that others said she could read people. She did a few people and the things she said were really quite specific and apparently true to the person she was reading based on their reaction. This was years and years ago, well before the internet was available. She also gave advice to a guy who had been wanting to ask his boss for a raise. She told him at a specific time during their meeting to get up to use the restroom, and that when he returned, his boss would agree to his raise. At our next get together, he said it worked and he got his raise. He thinks the boss made a phone call having to do with him while he was gone because the boss was hanging up when he came back from the bathroom.
She said she has always been able to do this, but cannot read her husband or son for some reason. Anyway, about a month after one of our get togethers, one of my coworkers was killed in a fall at work. His wife was beyond hysterical and felt that her friend, the psychic, knew this was going to happen to him and didn’t warn her. She had read the coworker that was killed, and the wife really felt that she could have prevented his death if she had warned him not to go to work that day. It ruined what was a very lengthy friendship between these two women. The psychic woman swore she didn’t see the accident, but the guy’s wife couldn’t believe her. They had worked together for years, and the wife quit her job because she felt the information had been kept from her and she didn’t want to be around this woman any longer.
I guess if you are one of the few that really do have this gift, you end up in some bad situations like this.
If you yourself had this ability, would you use it to make money? Use it to help police with missing person’s cases and maybe any other things you could see? Or would you keep quiet about it so that you were not constantly pressured by those around you all the time?

I’ve been working on my own abilities with this. But what I feel is psychics/mediums/energy healers/readers...etc aren’t meant to “prove” to you that what they are doing or seeing is real. The inner knowing and resonance is to be entertained, not the evidence or reliance on the outer. Whenever I read people I don’t tell them what is true. I just share with them how I’m feeling and share my insights with them and tell them to only take in what resonates. It makes the connection much stronger and significant.
I’ll usually get readings done for me at least once a week. One of my medium friends tells me when she’s getting a message from one of my grandmothers who have passed, I can tell which grandmother she is talking about by the way she says it. But I’ll always ask just to make sure ☺️ Maybe one day I’ll feel the answer myself. Usually after the readings something synchronistic will show up to validate it.
For instance one of the readings the same friend gave me was about the song Imagine. When I was playing the part back for boyfriend to listen to while we were going somewhere, the song Imagine started playing in the radio.
