I have to replace them a couple of times a year. Is that just the nature of the item? Even when I buy Apple brand, they die sooner than I expect.
I don’t think I am abusing them, by bending them too sharply or being rough with them.
What is your experience With cell phone charging cords? Advice?

I cycle through them pretty quickly also. My brother says it is because I am rough with everything. 😄
The little wimpy one that came with my 1st iPad didn’t even last a year. Then I went to the rope type because they said they were tougher. I am on my third one.
ETA - it is the charging cord itself that always has an issue for me.

My phone is 2 years old and I have the original charger. My pervious one was 3 years old. DH has never had a problem. DDs only do when they were plugging them in behind their beds and the cord was bending. All Samsung cords.

I have always had my original cords for the life of my device since my first iPod in 2003. DH and DS not only kill cords but kill devices quickly. Don't know why.

Do you use the device as it’s charging? I do with the one in the family room and I replace it every 18-24 months. I buy the braided Amazon brand cords and I think they are about $10.

My original Apple cords have lasted fine, but good lord, the after-market ones are all junk, as far as I can tell. My son says I’m out of my mind, for whatever that’s worth.

I swear it's all a conspiracy to keep buying. Junk, I tell ya. I'm always complaining to my dh about the crappy quality of everything. Nothing lasts and costs so much.

Anker brand. Haven’t had one die on us yet. I use my devices while they are charging. Especially my iPad. My husband is super rough on them and I was having to buy new ones constantly. All my lightning ones are red so they are easily identifiable. We have tons of these upstairs, downstairs, in our cars, and in a travel bag. Love them, well worth the cost. Anker 6ft lightning braided charger.

I've always used the original cord for the life of the device. I put a good 5 or more years on them, even the cheap ones on amazon. I do use more than one cord so maybe that is why? There is one in my office, one in my car, one in my home office, one in my travel tote, and one by my bed (this one gets used the most.) The only two that are ever plugged/unplugged from the outlets are the one in my work office and the one in my travel tote. All the rest just stay plugged in.

My devices die or get replaced before the chargers do. I usually end up with a drawer full of chargers that I have no clue what they went to. Are you constantly plugging and unplugging them? I never unplug mine unless I need to charge my phone/device when I'm on vacation or if I forgot to charge my phone and need to recharge it at work.

I’ve been using the same chargers for about 3 years now. No issues. The one I have in the living room gets used a lot in the evenings, while I’m on my phone even. No problem.

Most of my original cords (except maybe 1?) are still going strong. It’s the long after market cords that are well crap. I need really long cords to reach my bedside and my end table in the family room has a built in USB port on the back side, so another long cord.
I’ve purchased multiple cords that have died but recently purchased 2 Anker Powerline Lightning (10ft) Apple MFi Certified Lightning Cables. They are not the braided but seem to be very sturdy and work great.

I have been through many cords! Last time I went for an Apple repair the tech suggested the Anker brand. He said they are much more sturdy than Apple brand.
He also sheepishly admitted there is planned obsolescence.

I’m anal and don’t like the charge to get very low. This has been a really interesting conversation. I don't often use mine while it is charging. In the bedroom I might do a last check of the weather (we are in storm season) and make sure my alarm is set but it only gets about 5 minutes of use while plugged in. I have noticed my phone tends to get warm to the touch if I use it very long while plugged in. So I try to not charge and use at the same time.

Amazon Basics brand has been great for me. I buy the 10 foot cord so it isn’t bent too much if I do decide to use my phone while it charges, but I try to leave it alone. I have an iPad as well so I can swap devices while one charges.

I’m anal and don’t like the charge to get very low. The kids' cords wear out constantly, but they are frequently on their phones as they are charging. Often, the cord bends a bit as you are using it and all those little bends over time results in damaged wires. Flipping your phone around so that it's sticking out of the top will help. A charge lasts a day for me, so I seldom charge it and use it while it's charging. I really think that's the difference. But for $10 to replace with the Amazon cords, I don't worry about it a lot.

Maybe they are assisting in the deaths so they can get new devices more frequently? OP I always use the original cords for the life of my device also. I also have a cheapie one I bought on AMZ and that one is still going strong.

The cheap woven ones off Amazon that come 3 in a pack for about $12 last me the longest. It may be the way you set your phone when it’s plugged in also. The more the area of the cord at the base is bent, the faster it will wear down and not work any longer.

I'm no help--we tend to keep our phones a long time--4-5 yrs before replacing, and have never had any issues with the charging cords.

I have several in strategic places like my car, next to the recliner, next to my bed.

Check the little prongs on the back if you have android type chargers (I don't know about Apple products). They get mashed in. You can pry them out and the cords work just fine again. There are videos on YouTube. I've had everything from cheap no brand to Ankers die on me and this fix has worked for me most of the time.

Knock on wood but I’ve never had a cord or charger die. I have a couple of non-apple cords that are just fine too. But I often hear about people having to buy new cords all the time. I don’t know why I am lucky.

Here’s what I figured out when I was stuck in a chair for months.....
You plug your phone in. It’s upside down. To view the phone you pick it up and turn it over. It’s the turning it over to view that twists and breaks the cord.
Our daughter eats her cords. She is constantly breaking them.
Frustrating!

For mini USB devices... it's the little prongs that wear down and dust buildup inside the device. I've been using these magnetic connections and so far so good link. They make these connections for iPhone devices, too. I believe it's poor design and another thing people are dependent on to purchase, like deodorant and razors.

Don't use your device while charging. This causes the breakage.

I have owned one iPod touch, two iPads and I’m on my third iPhone in roughly ten years. DH has an iPad, two iPad minis and three iPhones. DD has an iPad and still uses my ancient iPod. We’ve had exactly one cord casualty over all those devices in all that time. This is in spite of being plugged in pretty much daily, taking the chargers and cords back and forth to the cabin on weekends half the year, and a kid who’s rough on them. We do have a few additional cords that we bought so we could leave one in each vehicle, leave an emergency cord at the lake cabin, one in my purse and have a couple in convenient places around the house. I do sometimes use the device while it’s charging too, so that can’t be a reason they go bad unless it’s something a person routinely does.
Now my BFF on the other hand probably needs to buy a new cord every couple months because she’s constantly killing them. She has a Samsung phone, FTR. She thinks they go bad from her phone falling on the floor while it’s plugged in.

My son is usually needing a new charger every month or so, now he has been on this charger for 4 months. Jennifer

The struggle is real here with phone cords. A few years ago i was on a time crunch and spent $40 on a cord from a Verizon store that has a lifetime guarantee. I replace it usually 2-3 times a year; I walk in and they just exchange it no questions asked.
My kids’ cords are always dying too. I’ve tried the amazon cords and they didn’t last long either. Now I buy the $6-$8 cords at the checkout line at Walmart; I save the box and receipt and if they die within 90 days, I exchange it.
