At my son's graduation the graduates were resplendent in their robes, cords and many leis. Leis made of ribbons, dollars, candy, and of course beautiful flowers. It looked quite lovely. My son wore a ribbon lei made by me as well as the orchids and others as gifts. My in-laws fairly recently replanted from the mid-west were surprised by all the leis. We are in the Bay Area of California so its quite common here. It got me wondering how common is it to see leis at graduation across the United States or elsewhere.

Lots here in my area of the PNW, but only after graduation, not during.

I haven't seen any in northern Michigan.
How is that not cultural appropriation?

No. Graduates may only wear the exact robe, hat, stole and cords issued by the school. Girls must wear a solid white dress/outfit and boys must wear dark pants, light jacket, shirt and tie of choice. There is a full dress rehearsal to make sure students are in compliance. Public school.

I selected no. I’m in Michigan. I did have leis for my graduation as my family is Native Hawaiian and it is very typical in our family. It would not have been typical for anyone else around here though.
As another posted mentioned it just isn’t allowed here with the school rules either. I have had to give my sons their leis after the ceremony and formal photos were done. They could wear them for family photos after.

Graduates here can only wear school/district issued stoles or cords, so no leis during graduation.

No.
Graduates can only wear school issued robes, hats, collars, and cords. They cannot be altered. So we don’t do the hat decorating thing here, either.

I did buy my son an orchid lei for 8th grade grad but only because it was $12 at Costco.
Their grandma buys them for graduations - the ones with candy and money.
It's very common in CA and some schools make them as fundraisers.

I just googled "too many graduation leis" and there are photos with kids up to their ears in leis in Hawaii. Seems like the Texas version of the homecoming mum. More and bigger are better!

Yes, but not really the candy/ toy ones. We order floral ones from Hawaii. It’s not that expensive if you do an order with friends. Of course, we’re on the west coast, so I don’t know what the shipping would be like to areas further away.

More and bigger are better!Yes, most just get one or two candy/money leis around here but there was one Hawaiian girl in DD's graduation class who was up to her eyeballs with leis sent by grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc. I don't think she could walk once they were all stacked on. DS's school was selling candy leis at graduation and people were buying them to munch on during the ceremony as much to give to the grads. As soon as the grads join their family, the leis are put on.

Leis are very popular here (SoNV). They are presented after graduation, not worn during the ceremony. My credit union currently has a sign on the door asking grads to make sure all the staples have been removed from their lei money, so they don't get stuck in the counting machine.

They are very popular at the graduations I've been to (California). At the college level, my kids wore their leis into the ceremony. At the high school and grade school levels, they wore them after the ceremony. At the graduation I recently attended, 90% of the graduates had one or more leis on.

Ca teacher here.... at our 8th grade graduation (of 28 students, our school is very small) this past Tuesday my students were covered in leis. Our teacher parent club make them and sold them for $10 each before graduation. The kids wore them during the ceremony. They wore caps and gowns provided by the school so no decorating of the caps. We also provided (for them to keep) tassels with the year on them and cords for honors and high honors, under their gowns the kids wore whatever they chose. I had girls all done up with fake nails and eyelashes and full make up and hair in a 2 piece formal dress with hooker heels and I had girls in jeans, long sleeve tee, and converse, one of my girls wore a fancy dress and cowboy boots. My boys for the most part wore long pants and button up shirts. I had one in a Hawaiian shirt and shorts and flip flops. One of my girls had a shoe fail as she was getting ready to leave my room to line up, we grabbed the stapler and tried to fix it but the first award she got (and she got many) her shoe broke again so I motioned to her to just take them off and go barefoot. She was so cute!

Zero here. The only time I ever saw a lei at graduation was afterwards and because the family were from Hawaii.
My kids' school will not let them decorate their caps.

We very rarely see them down here in the Deep South. The only 2 I have seen where families from Hawaii (military) and they were gorgeous.

My sister had a lei made out of cash for my niece for her college graduation. We live in the North Bay Area but niece graduated college in Oregon. We saw all types of leis at that graduation.

Nope. Dress clothes, including shirt and tie for the boys. NHS stoles, honor cords, and medallions. No leis.

Never heard of that tradition here in NYC. Kids do decorate their cap.

My nephews graduated from a high school in Pacific Grove, CA in 2014 and 2017 and their school distributed to all graduates an orchid lei before they assembled for seating at the graduation (so before the ceremony). I thought it was a bit strange as I consider leis part of the Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders cultures. It is a wealthier area as it includes Pebble Beach (although my BIL and SIL insist they are the poorest family in town).
