I work in an open space with cubicles with about 20 people in the space. My cubicle neighbor recently brought in a white noise machine and it is driving me nuts. At first I could not figure out where the noise was coming from. It sounds like someone left a radio on a station with a bad signal. I was checking my computer speakers to see if it was coming from there. Then I heard her clicking it off when her employees would come to her desk. So I'm wondering if this is a normal thing that happens in offices, am I out of line to be annoyed by this? I get it that we have a lot of people in an open space and you can hear everyone's conversations which can sometimes be distracting, but typically we are a fairly quiet office, and coworkers communicating with each other is to be expected... But the constant static noise all of the sudden is far worse than the sporadic talking.

She needs to put her white noise machine on headphones. It seems like a perfectly reasonable request.

I work on a trade floor which is also an open concept but we do not have cubicles. It's just rows and rows of desks. That would drive in nuts too!!!

My building provides our white noise. You can't tell it's there unless it's off which is the whole point!

Since I hate white noise I would be asking them to turn it down.

In open shared office space people need to use ear buds. It's just respectful. I have my own office and I still use my ear bud.

My cubicle neighbor recently brought in a white noise machine and it is driving me nuts. I couldn't deal with that. If your cubicle mate needs white noise, they also need to wear earbuds to listen to it. I could not handle listening to that while trying to work!

Yesterday they died right in the middle of a song that I love. So I plugged in my buds and just listened to the music without them. It felt SO weird, that after the song was over I shut it off and just waited for my buds to be charged again lol

What's a 'good' noise to one person can be a 'bad' noise to another. I find that sort of buzzing white noise to be 'bad.'
It should be an unspoken rule that any extraneous noise (white noise, music, nature sounds, or anything) be limited to headphone use only.

I personally don't mind it. I have one but I have my own office so it doesn't bother anyone else.. it actually is a fan as well.. I use it for the fan mainly. If I worked in an open area I would use earbuds. But someone else's machine running I don't think would bother me.

Our school admin office uses Dohm sound machines to minimize sound carry through the space. There are six people in a not super huge space. I barely notice it.
In my room the air conditioner makes its own white noise and I don’t even notice it either.

I like to sleep with a white noise machine on but once I’m up and out of bed I have to turn it off because it bothers me when I’m awake. I would ask that they use headphones.

White noise bothers the heck out of me. In a situation like you describe that would drive me insane.

If she can't work with the ear buds/head phones then she needs to find another job where there are no/fewer people. I just don't understand why people think this is ok?

Thankfully, I'm the only other person in the office and I leave my radio on for background noise. A constant hum would bother me, especially one so loud that I have to turn off to hear people speak. Playing a bit of a devil's advocate here... is there a noise coming from your cubicle or the one next to hers that she's trying to mask?

That would drive me nuts. And I agree with everyone else that if she needs it to concentrate she should use earbuds or headphones to keep it to herself.

As someone who runs a white noise machine at home (alone) all day, I think it is brilliant because so many people make annoying repeated noises in an office setting and they don’t even realize it. I’ve never run into it in a work environment, but in doctors’ offices. That being said, I’d never do it without headphones. I can just see the need and my first thought was wondering what sound do you or someone else close to y’all makes that is driving her crazy.

Additionally, it doesn't matter what the sound is; if it's an open office, no one should be playing anything on speakers.
In the meantime, I recommend cranking Lizzo's deluxe version of Cuz I Love You for the office. ("Boys" is a bop.) Much better than white noise.

My building provides our white noise. You can't tell it's there unless it's off which is the whole point! We have white noise speakers above the ceiling tiles. When we installed them, people complained that it was too loud and made them crazy. So, I turned it way down and then every day or two I bumped it up a little bit until it's higher than it was initially. Nobody noticed the little bumps and now everyone only notices when it's off (or when a speaker was failing and turning itself on and off.)

We just moved in to a new office space six months ago. They built in white noise because of our open concept floor plans. It gradually gets louder throughout the day. They told us that with it we wouldn't be able to hear someone's conversation two cubes away (spoiler alert: not true). I can go weeks without noticing it. Then one day it will drive me out of my mind because it's incessant and I can't go anywhere in the building to escape it except put on headphones and listen to something else. Then I can go a couple more weeks without noticing it. I haven't figured out why I'm super sensitive to it on the random days?

I also hate white noise when sleeping. My DBF uses a fan when he sleeps and I hate it. He needs the fan blowing on his face, not for the sound. Ugh, drives me crazy. I often fall asleep with my blanket over my ear to help hide the sound.
