... control your urges to scream about all the people you hate ... is something I'd like to say to a few million people. (not even LGBTQA related) Maybe she should have stuck to that. Even those who think they're "controlling" the urge to scream, their "screams" although not *loud*, are still heard loud and clear. Regardless of what you think about her OR this song, this is impressive: YouTube: Taylor Swift - You Need To Calm Down Taylor Swift 24M views1 day agoNot necessarily, since most of those views are due to lookieloos over the media attention. Taylor Swift may be talented although it's def not my type of music. She comes off as shady af. She acts like a bitch behind the scenes and plays the victim on a public stage. I guess most people in the spotlight are just putting on a show, but she really gets under my skin. A bec for sure.

I'm not a Taylor Swift fan...I could probably name two songs, but then again I'm FAR from her target audience age group. Therefore I had to look this up, and while I won't be playing it or buying it, I loved what it all stood for and that she is showing her support for the LGBTQ community. I thought the message in the video was very clear, as well as who needs to calm down. I particularly liked the "shade never made anybody less gay" line. Good on her for taking a stand and being public about her support for all of her fans no matter what their gender/sexual identity is. I don't see how anyone can claim it's queer baiting, when actual LGBTQ people are right there in the video, they aren't fake just to attract an audience.
On another note she was on Graeme Norton recently and I was surprised at how tall she was, I always assumed she was one of those tiny little things but when she sat down in the couch she looked like she was taller than all the other guests, even the men.

Saw the same episode and thought the same thing. I agree with the rest of your post too. I can’t understand the “gay baiting” comment and I’m heading over to Twitter now to suss out the replies to that tweet. ETA: Hmmmm just as I thought...... shit blew up

Depicting the people that need to " Calm Down" as, for want of a better word " lower class" ,who are carrying placards that are full of spelling mistakes, therefore, uneducated is suggesting that the working-class communities are to blame. Homophobia exists at all levels of the class system, and to pretend that the enemy is in double-denim with an American flag on its T-shirt and uneducated is short sighted in getting this message across. It isn't only them that she needs to tell to "Calm Down" if she's serious about getting the message across. It's the people at the top, the so called educated, middle and upper class, religious, and the people in authority....where were they in her video?

I don't know that she was saying that it's only the uneducated. My impression of the video was that you make yourself look like an uneducated moron when you choose to spread that kind of hate. I've only watched the video 4 times - one time each with one of my kids and solo - but from what I remember, it's a whole thing about taking her own advice too? So, in the beginning she was in her trailer with all her stuff and then sets it on fire to show she's moving on, the comments and stuff from Trolls has made her realize she's overcome worse and doesn't need it. Then she moves onto LGBTQ+ and why should you spread hate, when it doesn't change who anybody is, ie: shade doesn't make anyone less gay. Then she's talking about how people turn women against each other for their own enjoyment, but all women are queens, so nobody needs to fall into "their" games. She doesn't represent the "them" with this necessarily, just the same crowd of trailer park trash, which just fits in with her trailer park theme? So, for me, I didn't take her message as only the trailer trash people are to blame, just YOU make yourself a trailer trash person when you behave this way. However, I do see where you're coming from, and agree about the other people who are responsible.

This was the only thing that bothered me about the video. I like TS (DD is a big fan, her songs are played often in our home) and I fall in the "people are overly critical of her for no good reason" camp, but as someone from Kentucky, I get bothered quickly by portrayals of poor people or hillbillies as dumb and intolerant. DD and I talked about the video a bit yesterday, and she didn't love that portrayal of the "bad guys" either, but we both felt like it kinda had a point about the way a very vocal bunch of Southerners have behaved. We're willing to give her a pass for the greater good the video/song is doing for the LGBTQIA+ community, who need allies speaking out right now way more than hillbillies do.

As for the trailer park theme, that in itself is a laugh......TS has probably never been in a trailer park in her life let alone live in one. She's still depicting people who live in trailer parks, in your words.....look like a moron, trash and uneducated. You obviously think like her if that is what you get out of the video. Living in a trailer park, being poor or uneducated doesn't necessarily make you a moron or homophobic.

By focusing on one group in society, as she has done in the video, she's giving the others a pass. Like I said earlier, if she really wanted to get the message out there she would have had an across the board social class of people in that video. Not uneducated, hillbilly's as you call them.

Living in a trailer park, being poor or uneducated doesn't necessarily make you a moron or homophobic. I'm glad you know her life story, I sure as hell don't. The whole thing was a trailer park, even the people she was defending. The people she wanted to calm down were depicted as the "trailer trash". Everyone else who lived there was all shiny and happy. Nowhere did I say "people who LIVE in trailer parks are uneducated". I said you do make yourself look uneducated when YOU CHOOSE to spread that kind of hate. I've known plenty of people who lived in a trailer park and they wouldn't be in either of her groups of people displayed. It's not meant to be real life. I'm not a video director, so I have no idea how she could've gotten her message across to be more realistic for you. I still think she's getting her message across. You could easily say not all gay people are the celebrities she chose to use either.

I haven’t ever paid attention to Taylor Swift (I’ll bop along to her music on the radio but that’s it) and didn’t know about the song and video until I saw this thread. I texted my 29YO gay son who keeps very much up on pop culture (he’s in the entertainment industry) and he didn’t have much to say other than that he felt it was “pandering” and that “people (aka those he knows) are generally annoyed by her.” So there you go, from the horse’s mouth

I appreciate a lot of Taylor Swift's qualities. I like a lot of her music.
But she really REALLY needed to have someone explain "shade" to her. Denigrating someone's existence isn't shade!!!! That lyric could've been "Hate never made anyone less gay" and that would've worked.
Video is enjoyable. Still feels pretty much like marketing for her; there were plenty of times in the past she could've spoken up and remained silent, and now that it's cool/woke/whatever to speak out, she's jumping in the fray because it's safer.
Girl, you had a platform and could've been a LOT braver a LOT sooner. Dixie Chicks weren't scared. Respect for them.
But, better late than never, I guess!

I don't know if your son listens to podcasts, but one of my faves, Keep It, just did a whole critique of the TSwift vid. (That's where I got the "hate never made anybody less gay" quote from). It's really good (and thoughtful, not just hating on TSwift). I saw that Onion article, too! Dying!
