Update -
Color me surprised and grateful. I had intended to see if the bank could do anything about my mistake the day after I posted this. Instead, I received a work request from my one and only client and it was a rush job. I finally finished that on Tuesday and planned to go to the bank this morning. I receive a daily text message from my bank telling me how much is in both my checking and savings accounts. I was surprised to see my account had increased this morning. I logged on to find a credit of $310 from the bank that received my mistaken payment. I didn’t have to call anyone or find out if my bank had any procedure in place that I could try, it was just there! I figured it would take weeks to see the money returned, if I ever got it, but there it was in my bank this morning. One big irritant off my list! So FYI, make sure you remove any previous accounts from your bank’s payment list so you don’t accidentally do what I did.
Original post - I pay a lot of my bills on line and it just came to my attention that a payment of over $300 to my pool man was not received. When I looked at my bank records to see what the problem was, I realized that right below my current pool guy was the line from the old pool company. I accidentally sent the money to the pool guy that I haven't used in a few years. It was cashed and they didn’t send me a reimbursement check, which I have actually received from different companies when I have overpaid them.
I printed out the information to show that they received my money and drove over there to request a refund. The windows were papered over and the store is gone! &$#/@. Now what? I will look the guy up on line and write him or call him or whatever I can, but I think my money is gone.
I cannot believe I did this, especially right now when money is so tight.
Anyone have any ideas other than to try to find the owner and ask for a refund? And prayers that he follows through.

Hopefully he just moved to another location. Have you tried googling his name, old number, checking yelp to see if there's any info on him, checking to see if he has a business license?

I would also ask local police for any advice. Your bank might also have some advice/help.
Sorry you are going through this.
FWIW, my friend accidentally added a 0 to the end of her payment to ATT. It took her 9 months to get the money refunded.

Ask your bank to do a dispute. They may be able to send the information over to the bank that cashed it and pull it back for you.

Maybe look him up on Facebook..I’m guessing he has a company FB page and you could contact him through there.

I hope you get your money back. Have you searched for the pool company online? Is it possible they moved?

Oh that sucks! I would definitely dispute it with your bank of Monday. They can guide you as to what needs to be done to get your money back.

Did you use a credit card. ? I have paid some bills lately with a credit card, safer if there is a problem!

I will go to my bank on Monday with all of the information I can gather. I hope they can help me. I found the website for the closed business and it lists his name. The business was in that same location for probably 15 or 20 years. I can’t see a new location, so he must have closed it.

I am not sure what you would be disputing, as others are have suggested. You selected the payee. However, hopefully the bank can help you. That really sucks. $300 is a lot of money when money is tight.

That really sucks. $300 is a lot of money when money is tight. I am not disputing the fact that I made the mistake in choosing the correct payee, I am just hoping they have some sort of protocol for retrieving the money. I don't know how long this guy’s business was closed, and I am hoping the business account was closed or at least dormant and that it money is just sitting in there. I have no idea if the owner closed the shop or possibly even died and won't be looking for my money. I may well be out the $300, which will really hurt right now. But it won't kill me, it will just pinch a lot.

See if whatever county he is in can give you an address for where they send or used to send his business license or tax bills. It may also be online in your area. Then you would have to file a small claims in court but it would be easy to do.

You've already been given plenty of advice, but I'll send along some sympathy as well. I'd be mad at myself too.

I sympathize. Once I made a several hundred dollar payment on my ex-husband’s credit card instead of mine. It’s an expensive lesson and one I found only happens once!

If it is a closed account, or wrong address, the bank may credit it back to you.
Just a couple of months ago, our HOA changed banks and the PO Box where our payments were to be made.
I paid online to the old PO Box, not the new, in error.
On my checking account balance it debited it the same day but about a week later it was automatically credited back.
It was actually two times that I did this and each time a week later it was credited back automatically each time.
I did not know this until I received a late notice from our HOA.
