awwwwwww, DD boyfriend had DH and I meet him last night. I knew something was up and figured this was it.. but trying not to get all weird about it..
So we met him last night and I knew immediately it was happening. He was so cute and nervous. He says since their relationship is moving forward with trying to buy a house and both of them getting better jobs... getting up there in college.. he feels like this is the next step and he didn't want to do anything 'not proper' like just moving in together. So he asks us for permission.. it was soooo cute.. We really like this guy. He is very focused on school (so is she) and his next step is a surgical nurse. Currently he's a 1st Assist as a surgeon or surgery assistant (I don't know the exact title).
They are going to California this weekend for a wedding so he is planning on some kind of beach proposal... and showed us the ring.. (soooo pretty)... I can't imagine her not saying yes, as they been lightly discussing it anyways for awhile.
His parents are SO awesome. His dad thinks my DD walks on water (although we try to tell him she doesn't) haha.. Her boyfriend told us that his parents wanted to come with him when he talked to us (apparently that is a custom from where they are from.. in Mexico) but he never heard of it and told them no.. I told him he should have.. that would have been fun!! He was like 'I didn't know... if it is such a tradition why didn't they say something earlier.. lol'
Anyways, I have to keep quite until it happens.. YIKES.. so sometime between Thursday and Sunday!! It was SO hard to come home from that and act normal. Thankfully my son just got home from Germany for his vacation.. so that was a great distraction!

How exciting!!! It’s awesome that you all get along. My husband had his parents ask mine. I didn’t like it. Ooh...I would not be ok with that. It might be a deal breaker for me. I don't even like that the future son in law asked 'permission' in the OP. They don't need permission. I dont mind mind asking parents for their blessing/giving a head's up - but the person needs to be clear that even if the parents don't like it, it's still happening.

That's so nice. Best wishes to you all. We're visiting my 27 y/o dd and her live in boyfriend this weekend. It's her birthday and this kind of news wouldn't surprise me. But he'd never ask for permission. They are so very "woke" and I'm sure she (and he) would think asking us would be "patriarchal." Plus they've been living together for 4 years so asking for our blessing would be a little overdue.

That's exciting. My husband cannot keep a secret to save his life, so I kind of hope that her boyfriend doesn't ask for our blessing. He'll have it. However, she has her grandma's diamond ring waiting for her. Her boyfriend knows she has a big diamond sitting in a safety deposit box, so if he wants to propose with a ring, he's going to have to ask for it. My job will be keeping my husband's mouth shut.

And it was asking for their blessing in that he moved up the timetable of the proposal. Original plan was to marry post university but I think they were starting to realize they'd likely move out of province for a while when school ended, so it was easier to get married prior to that. Hence moving up the formal proposal by a year. He just wanted to reassure them they would both finish school & they could handle both school & planning the wedding.

That would be a fun surprise for all of you if they decide to get engaged!
I can't imagine my daughters asking their boyfriends parents either. My 21 yr. old's boyfriend's parents don't even know about her and they have been dating over 2.5 yrs. They are very strict! Haha, so she knows better than to talk to them about it first.
