Just curious...did anyone surprise you? Did you change your opinions about anyone?

I agree with Trollie about the stand outs tonight. Amy Klobuchar also was strong. I thought all of the others to be mostly argumentative. I’m not sure about Kamala Harris, and don’t care for Biden or Sanders at all.

How did Beto do?

I just realized I missed him somehow so I am going to rewatch it on MSNBC. We had company when it was on the first time so In guessing I wasn't paying too much attention.

I didn’t think Beto was very strong. I’ve heard him speak previously and was expecting that same confidence and charisma but I didn’t see it and he let Castro pretty much run him over.

Commentary has been mostly that Beto did not do well, that he was more or less the "loser" of the night. I do not think he came off as well as he needs to to stay in the race.

I watched about 90 minutes of it. We lost about 5 minutes due to NBC not being able to get the mike on the right people and having to rerun commercials. They were laughing it off after all the promo they did, there must have been a lot of fuming by their producers. I also thought NBC could have done with no more than 3 moderators. We had 10 candidates, we didn't need another 6? people asking them questions.
Corey Booker had a good night. I got a sense that there were more plans and substance to him than I had previously thought from his tweets and brief cameos I'd seen. He got a lot of airtime last night.
If I hadn't known Elizabeth Warren was the frontrunner going in, I would have thought she was just another one in the pack. She speaks well but didn't get that much time. She made her points but there was nothing that really shone out for me. She didn't screw up but she didn't wow imo.
Beto was as unspecific as ever. I don't see how he ever managed to get so far in the Texas Senate race.
I liked what Amy Klobuchar had to say but again she didn't have a stand out moment.
The person I knew the least and found that I agreed with the most was Delaney. I don't think he will go anywhere. But I'm more of a moderate Democrat. He made the point I've made for years that Medicare just doesn't pay doctors and hospitals enough to sustain our healthcare system as it is. You would have to drastically change everything or substantially raise the cost of Medicare - for all including seniors and that won't fly.
Tonight's group has more of the high pollers.

Honestly, nothing said in any of the Democratic debates will change my final vote. Yes, I will participate in the primaries and hopefully find a candidate that I can fully support, but I will be voting for the Democratic nominee for president.
I find it horrifying that so much money is being wasted by candidates who do not have a chance of being nominated and that the campaigning is starting so early.
If it were up to me, they would begin officially campaigning the July 1st before the presidential election and limit each candidate to $500,000 in total campaign spending!

Are they supposed to ‘win’ a primary without campaigning?

I was surprised by Cory Booker's strong performance - I really didn't know much about him. Somewhere I read that Bernie Sanders has 35% of the under 50's supporting him and Joe Biden has a similar percentage of the over 50 vote. Wonder how that will all shake out after these debates.

I thought Castro was really strong, Warren and Klobuchar were very good. The woman from Hawaii was terrible as was Deblasio and the guy from Ohio. Beto was not good. I understand the need to reach out to the Spanish speaking voters but damn, put up some subtitles at least. When Beto went off the first time, Booker had a really funny look on his face. The rest of them were just meh.

I think 3/4 of these folks need to drop out and focus on taking back the Senate. And Sanders needs to drop out- we dont need an 80 year old in the white house.

I will admit to wanting age limits in all offices. Sanders, Warren, Biden are all too old for me. While I know people are living longer all the time and there are plenty of sharp-minded people in their 70's and beyond, I would rather they just retire and stick with local volunteering if they still want to serve. This applies at all levels - city, state, and federal.
Real term limits should be a thing. We already have them in place in certain offices. Why not ALL offices?
I will wait for the field to thin out a little bit more before I form a real opinion about any candidate.

IDeBlasio is our mayor in NYC and I Was shocked when he decided to run. He is the most uncharismatic person and you need just a little charisma to make it to President. Sanders is too old and his ideas are too progressive. While I do agree with some of his ideas, I do think the Democrats need someone more middle of the road if they want to have a chance at winning.

Warren and Castro took the night, for sure. They're my top 2 picks right now, so I was pleased to see them do so well.
I'm going to need to drink tonight, I think. Bernie is going to irritate the shit out of me. I hope Kamala checks him.

He got a lot of airtime last night. I thought this too. I haven't really followed much of the "campaigning" just yet. I'll be watching tonight for sure. I think I'm leaning towards Warren if I had to choose from the ones last night. She is a fighter though, and I'm not sure we need someone so outspoken and "rough" around the edges to follow the loser we have had for the last 3 yrs.

I thought Julian Castro did quite well, especially re immigration. Elizabeth Warren was articulate and intelligent as always so there were no surprises there. Beto O’Rourke did not fare well as he just seemed out of his element, IMO. Altogether, I liked the fact that so many divisive issues were raised. My choice has always been Warren and nothing in this debate changed my mind. But I’ll still watch tonight’s debate and see how it goes.

OK, I rewatched without distractions.
Beto - he did lousy. And him speaking 1/2 in Spanish was a flop IMHO. I theory I get why he was doing it in Spanish. But he wasn't consistent and he didn't even answer the questions asked of hm and came across as pandering to the Hispanic voters.
Booker - he did ok. Better than I thought he would.I would guess he had the most air time.
Warren - I just dont like her. I feel like Delaney threw her under the bus for later when he spoke about hospitals going out of business because of her wanting to get rid of everyones insurance and make them have medicare. If Warren gets the nomination, this issue will hurt her with voters like me who want to keep their insurance.
DeBlasio - ugh. I think he's boring.
Castro - he did ok, but I don't think he will last.
Amy Klobucha - I liked her more than I thought I would. Still need to see more.
Tim Ryan, Tulsi Gabbard, Jay Inslee, John Delaney - all should go away.

So many (most?) of us feel Bernie is too old, but he seems to have locked in the young vote. Why don’t they think he’s too old? Will they still vote and support the democratic candidate if it’s not Bernie? If it is Bernie will enough of them vote for him to actually win? He makes me nervous being in this race and I feel he’s as polarizing as a Hillary.

I was so behind Beto for Senate in Texas. And, he almost beat much hated Cruz.. It seems like he was on such a high from that election that he figured that he’d just keep the ball going and enter the big one. But he’s really never showed me much of anything since then. It was a nice try with the standing on the counters in the diners bit, but he sadly didn’t have much substance. The Spanish speaking last night was another nice try, but resulted in him looking pathetic. I am 100% behind Mayor Pete.

So many (most?) of us feel Bernie is too old, but he seems to have locked in the young vote. Why don’t they think he’s too old? Because we vote for what we personally want and the one we most closely relate to. He's offering free college tuition and/or paying off student loans. That's what the young vote knows...they are in school racking up large student loans or they are just starting in the workforce while paying off those high loans. That's what is important to them at this time in their life.
