The other thread about wasting had me thinking about all the produce I've tossed out. I have to say that the fresh vegetables I've purchased from Trader Joe's seem to go bad a lot faster than those from other stores. So much so that if I don't plan on using them within the next few days, I won't buy any from there. Do you find that produce from certain stores go bad quicker than others?

I don't buy many fresh veggies from trader joes.. I buy them from my local chain place..luckys and whole foods and local local chain.. mollie stones.
I don't want to buy much that is packaged.

Yes. I like Walmart, but I rarely buy produce there as it goes bad quickly.
My favorite places to buy produce is Bashas. They often have specials and I like the quality.

I don’t buy produce at TJs unless I’m going to use it that day. There is such a huge difference in quality (and flavor) between TJs and our local market. I’ve always assumed that TJs (not prepackaged) produce is seconds.

I buy almost all my produce from Costco. I like that it all comes wrapped up (well, except for boxes of peaches and a few other things) so people are not touching everything. My Walmart and other grocery stores have everything out loose and while it is nice to be able to buy a small bunch of broccoli, I've seen people touching stuff or dropping it on the floor and putting it back. I have compromised immunity so can't risk the germs.
I know Costco sizes are too big for lots of families but we do share with my mom who lives nearby. Most of the time it is still cheaper to buy Costco produce even if half is not eaten and the quality is way better. Very rarely do I have to throw away produce from there because it goes bad quickly, although I recently had a whole box of peaches that got rotten spots on them one by one but never ripened. It is so rare for that to happen though. Costco will take anything back that isn't good but I had thrown the peaches away one by one never thinking a whole box would be bad so didn't have any to take back.

Same here but lately I’ve noticed that the berries there have been pretty awful. Yesterday I wanted to get some strawberries to make a strawberry rhubarb pie and at least 20 packages had berries with visible mold on them right in the store already. Sorry, but no. I’m not buying stuff that’s already on the skids when it’s still in the store since I likely don’t get around to using it for 2-3 days after purchasing and by then the whole pack would be rotten. And in the case of the peaches, I would have brought the box back in with my receipt and say I didn’t really expect a refund since I wasn’t bringing them back, but I would want them to know what vendor it came from so they could be aware. Odds are good they would give you your money back anyway.

I have found that the pretty produce that stays fresh looking longer are hybirds, they look great but taste like cardboard. The very flavorful fruits and veggies are not perfect looking and go bad faster. I don't care for perfect produce as in most cases I'm just going to cut it up anyway. I buy most of my produce from the local Mexican market (a chain store). I am never disappointed.

Actually, I am starting to rethink getting produce @ Costco. Whenever I get fruit there it rots right away or doesn’t have much flavor. I am addicted to Cara Cara oranges. I used to get them at Costco but the last few years it has been hit or miss. The blueberries I got this week don’t have any flavor. I got 2 clamshells and I have been eating them like crazy but they aren’t very satisfying.

There’s one brand of berries I won’t buy no matter where they are because they are always moldy right under the brand sticker, everytine, no exceptions. They must do something that creates the mold that I don’t get every time with other brands.

Trader Joe’s produce totally sucks.
I get it mostly from our local high end store, the farmers market or Whole Foods.

Even within a specific chain, some stores are the alpha dogs and get the freshest produce. Our small town Co-op store does not get produce nearly as nice as its sister store 20 miles away. On top of that, b/c there are fewer customers, the produce sits longer in their display cases, so less fresh when it comes home with us.

Albertson’s (PNW chain) is terrible. It hardly ever looks good in the store.

We have a local grocery store/produce market that only has 2 locations and it is the only place I buy produce unless it is an emergency and I will be using it that night. They try to get produce from farms close to them and even though it isn’t always beautiful it tastes delicious and is reasonably priced. I am allergic, so I can’t eat them, but they have about 30 different varieties of apples at any time. They smell delicious as I walk by!

I only buy produce at H-E-B (local Texas chain). Many things are labeled local, as in they were grown in state, and I choose those first. Beyond that I try to stick to stuff that is in season in this hemisphere because it’s fresher and lasts longer. And finally, I put these in my produce drawer and they seem to help: OXO 11154100 EMW6297394, 1-Pack, White www.amazon.com/dp/B00TO8X0LU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_HQMfDb9K743CW.

Albertson’s (PNW chain) is terrible. It hardly ever looks good in the store. The newest store used to be really nice, because of the high volume of sales! I am sad that it has gone done hill for you. Albertsons is now Safeway owned. Do you every go to fiesta foods?

I don’t buy produce at TJ’s. The quality is just not there imo. I used to buy a lot of produce at Whole Foods, but since the Amazon acquisition, the quality isn’t as good as it used to be. I suspect they’re tinkering with supply chains. I mostly get produce from New Seasons - a locally WF-type store - or our farmers’ market.

I stop at the produce stand twice a week and try to only buy for half a week at a time. We are also growing more of our own in containers. Just small time since it’s just me and dh.

Wow, I thought I was just our TJ's. Interesting! We only buy their produce if we are going to use it that night.
I've had good luck with Costco, mostly. If it's a 2# container of blueberries and I don't eat or freeze them within a few days I think that's on me.
I prefer to buy at farmer's market or a roadside stand.

I buy all of my groceries at Whole Foods. When we switched to a whole foods, plant based diet my grocery bill went down a lot because we weren't buying any meat, animal products or diary. A lot of our diet is based on produce and the produce of our Whole Foods tastes so much better than our local chains (Giant, Safeway, Trader Joe's Shopper's Food Warehouse). We don't have a Costco, although we do have a Sam's Club. I also buy very little processed food on this diet although I do buy spaghetti sauce, bread, jam and cereal. Things like that. I think that helps my budget too which allows me to shop only at Whole Foods.
I do agree that the quality of produce has gone down a bit since Amazon took over but to me it's not that much, and I still get the best around here at Whole Foods. I wrap the fresh herbs I buy in paper towels and that seems to help. I do asparagus the same way and green onions instead of leaving them in the plastic produce bags. It makes them last a lot longer than if they were left in the plastic bags.

I don't buy any produce from big box stores, ie walmart, Target. I buy all of it at our local grocery. They try to do mostly local, and small farms. I would think TJ would be organic maybe? So not treated with most things, so maybe that's why it doesn't last?

Never at the grocery store. Occasionally at Costco, most at a local market. During the season, my mom hits the local farmers market too, and brings me stuff

I buy all produce, cream, dairy products (they sell Ellenos yogurt which I love), breads and frozen vegetables if I need them. It is pretty expensive for cereals, crackers, stuff like that, but they do have frequent sales and high quality products. I just go to Safeway or Fred Meyers for meat and staples.

Produce in my town is a gamble. In the summer, we have a local market that is pretty good as long as you don't go on Monday morning. You have to give them a day or so to get in fresh stuff for the week. The farmer's market is terrible. I have to go to the next town over for a good farmer's market. We have Walmart and one other grocery store. If I need several produce items, I'll just plan to visit both stores and try to get the best of each. The Aldi in the next town over has greatly improved their produce and I get several things there usually and they really last. The best storage purchase I've ever made are these from OXO Greensaver I have a couple of sizes and also the filters that attach to my vegetable drawers. They make such a difference. I fill up the linked size with Spinach from Aldi and it will last 2 weeks.

Same as everyone else, I only buy produce at TJ’s if I expect to use it quickly. I mean, onions and potatoes are fine, but more fragile stuff ... no. It never lasts. I do like their dairy, cheese, and meat, though.
Costco produce has gone downhill, too. Plus with the giant containers, I usually just buy there if it’s for a party or something, and I can use a lot quickly.
I buy most produce at the local nice supermarket chain (Raley’s), Whole Foods, or farmer’s markets now. I’ve had good luck with all of those outlets.

I buy most produce from Trader Joe's, but use it early in the week so it is fresh. I make sure to properly store it (take it out of plastic bag for example) and use the blue apple to help it stay fresh. I also buy from Costco and Sprouts. But lately the fruit from Costco has not been good. Strawberries and grapes go bad so quickly that I have stopped buying those 2 items from there.
If you don't have a blu apple give that a try. They sell them on Amazon and it really does keep produce fresh.

We don't have a TJ's locally, so I can't speak from experience there. But I only buy produce from our United grocery store. If I ever pick stuff up at Walmart, it molds within a day or two. I can buy strawberries and blueberries from Sams and they are ok though & I would assume all the produce comes from the same suppliers (though, I don't know that they do...). Our Natural Foods grocery produce is slightly better than Walmart but their store is dark and dingy and I HATE going into there.
