I haven't but I'd personally want more time on individual islands than a cruise would allow. Kauai is our favorite and even though it's a very small island, it's easy to fill up a whole week exploring it.

We did a cruise and to be honest it was enough. We stayed on Hawaii for a few days and that was nice, but most of the islands are similar.

I just spent 12 days in Hawaii. I only visited two islands and didn't have time to do everything I had hoped to do. I can't imagine how you would get enough time to really get out and explore if you were on a cruise.

We did a 15 day cruise out of SF round trip on Princess with another couple. 5 ports which included Ensenada, days at sea to and from was fun, lots to do and nothing if you wanted to. I found it fairly relaxing to be able to do what I wanted, which I liked. I don't think I could have done a longer cruise though. This was just right and even if it was shorter (less sea time), it would have been good, too.

Not sure I could survive a flight from Western New York to Honolulu. So flying into Los Angeles and cruising would be an alternative. LOL

We just spent 10 days in Hawaii and had a great time. I personally don't think you can see and enjoy what Hawaii has to offer by going on a cruise.

We went on NCL Honolulu to Honolulu cruise. It was our first time to Hawaii, and I think it was a great trip. We stopped in 5 different places and had excursions in each one. It allowed us to figure out where we wanted to focus our time the next time we go to Hawaii.

If it’s simply because it’s a long flight, break it up by spending a day or two where you change planes on the west coast.

I haven't. Hawaii is my favorite place on earth, and I love to vacation there, but I would never do a cruise. Most of the best things to do and explore on the various islands are not close to the cruise port or are things you could not do in the amount of on-island time you get on a cruise. Two examples that pop into mind are the gorgeous Road to Hana on Maui (a full 12 hour trip) and night time manta ray snorkeling on the Big Island (not something you can do during the day).
What I love to do in Hawaii is to mix exploration with relaxation on the beach, and to do that you need almost a week on each island (you can explore 2 of the smaller islands in a week if you really want to). I would strongly recommend that you come up with what you want most out of a trip to Hawaii (snorkeling, beach time, hikes, waterfalls, Pearl Harbor, etc.) and then choose 1-2 islands to explore based on which islands offer more of what you want.

Spending so much of my precious vacation time "at sea" sounds way worse than flying to me. I just looked up a Hawaiian cruise from LA and out of the 15 days you are on the cruise you are in Hawaii only 4 of those days! No thank you. You could break up your trip with a day or two in LA before and after Hawaii and still get more on-island time than you would on a cruise.

Cruising is a great way to visit a place "fast" to see if you want to return for a longer stay. You just get little one day "bites" to taste it. So, if all you want is to be able to do quick day trips at several islands it is fun.
But, I would fly from NY to either Denver or California, spend 2-3 days then fly on from LA to Honolulu if NY to Honolulu is too long of a flight.

Flights from LA to Hawaii are "only" around 5 1/2 hours, which is almost exactly the amount of time it will take you to fly from NY to LA anyway.

Nonstop, from a major east coast airport to Hawaii is about 9.5-10 hours. Ask your Dr for anti anxiety medication. Try it before your trip so you know what to expect. You’ll probably need a second dose halfway or so through the flight. It sounds like (because of the distance) this is a once in a lifetime vacation. If it was me, I ‘d want to get every single thing i could out of the trip. Can’t be done from a cruise ship. I have to be medicated to fly (take half a Xanax). If I can do 16-18 hours flying, you can too

Spend a few days somewhere in the west then finish the flight. Then spend 10 days on an actual island instead of at sea with nothing but water to see. We spend one day at sea on a cruise to Montreal and was bored.

OMG, you mean taking a cruise from the west coast? NO WAY. I thought you meant a multi-island cruise once you arrived in Hawaii. I still wouldn't do that but a cruise from LA is wasting soooooo much time at sea. Suck it up for the long flight. You can do it. I looked up a 15 day cruise departing from LA to Hawaii. Out of 15 days, you'd have 45 hours actually on the islands. That's... crazy.

The wonderful day at sea was watching how at the mouth of the St. Lawrence Seaway became into the Atlantic Ocean. A wonderful cruise. The weather was perfect when I did this cruise.

I would much prefer to spend those "at sea" days on the islands themselves not on a ship. There is nothing between LA and Hawaii expect ocean. Nothing interesting to look at. And I like to cruise!
Fly to LA (or SF) spend a day or two then on to Hawaii and start your cruise from there. Or better yet, pick two or three islands and spend a few days at each.

If you're one of those people who take cruises and never get off the boat - sure it might be fun. One of my relatives loves ship time. She'll book re-positioning cruises where they hardly ever stop. Not my thing.

You'd be exhausted by the time you got there. But you can recover rapidly from a 10 hour flight and have lots of time at your destination. Spending 4 days in the open ocean one way and 5 days in the open ocean the other way, and only having 4 days in Hawaii to cut five hours off a flight seems like not the most time-efficient solution.

we did one this spring.. but I was with my 92 yr old mother in law and the slow pace suited us all. we rented a car on every island and looked around.. but not up to really active things. we did some short hikes.. we had a good time and we never mind ocean days when cruising.
so it just depends.

I wanted to add that things are really expensive in Hawaii. So maybe research lodging, transportation, food, entertainment for those 10 or 15 days flying direct and staying on land vs the price of the cruise where all that is included. And you can decide what you prefer to do.
Personally I get antsy being at sea for more than two days.

Hawaii is expensive (and the cruise is relatively cheap for the length of time you are cruising). If cost is an issue, I would still prefer to shorten my trip to 9 days (a work week and two weekends), which would get me 7 days on island over a 15 day cruise (plus two flight days, which would be 17 days total with only 4 days on island).

We did a cruise from island to island. I thought it was a great way to see a variety of locations/islands. We flew into Honolulu and stayed a couple of days before and after the cruise.
