We took Amtrak from Minot, ND to Whitefish, MT the other week, it was a full day trip there - leaving at 9am and arriving at 9pm with one time zone change. We learned a lot on the way there to make the trip home better. Although it was much better than we expected.
Seats have much more leg room than a plane, although I’m with the person who found them uncomfortable after a few hours.
We ate in the dining car for lunch, and found the food bland and expensive. So we stocked up on bringing food to eat on the way back.
I didn’t have to use the bathroom on the trip either way, so I can’t speak to the cleanliness of them.
The train (Empire Builder) had no WiFi despite it being advertised, although having read how next to useless Amtrak WiFi is, I’m not sure that’s much of a loss. Cell coverage is pretty spotty and bad in the northern half of Montana, so bad WiFi might’ve been better than nothing. 😂
The observation car was constantly filled all day by people with sleepers, which was mildly annoying. Normally, they enforce the no camping out there all day rule to allow everyone to get a turn, but they didn’t on ours.
Overall, it was fun for a change. We were going to Whitefish to Glacier National Park for a few days and it’s stunningly beautiful, although crowded. And it was nice not to have to drive there, although train travel is tiring in its own way. I’m not sure I’d want to go longer than 12 hours on it. The people who already been on it 24 hours by the time we got in, looked a bit rough.
Interesting observation, the train both ways had a lot of Mennonites traveling on it in groups. They were having a great old time playing canasta and stuff. We were wondering if was because they weren’t supposed to fly, or if train travel was just more cost effective or convenient for them.

jenjieHa! Thanks for asking. I looked for your review earlier but it wasn't up yet. First of all, we had a wonderful time in Florida. Super fun. We took the amtrak auto train down. We sat by a bulkhead so extra footroom for us too. I liked it that people weren't trampling by us. We almost got lost trying to find the dining car. I thought the food was bland, but "ok". I didn't sleep well at all and I took 2 advil pms. I think my dh and dd did worse than me though. For whatever reason, it seemed that our car was the only one that the a/c wasn't working on. It got so hot in there, my dh was dripping with sweat. In the morning, we went up for breakfast and that was fine. They sat a nice older gentleman with us as our 4th and he and my mother immediately started up a conversation. So cute. My dad's been dead 3 years now, so it was cute. I thought overall Amtrak was pretty efficient. HOWEVER, we were supposed to take the train back on Saturday, but I got an email from them that they had cancelled my train! It said train safety so I assumed they were preparing for the hurricane. We decided to cut our trip short and start driving. It all worked out ok in the end and I'm glad we're safe and not hindering people preparing for the hurricane. So a little miffed at Amtrak, but my family really didn't want to ride the train back anyway. They refunded my money. Thanks for asking and you and your daughter are SO cute! I hope she does amazing down in college!!! That’s too bad. If it makes you feel any better, my flight home got canceled. I got to stay a few more days.

That looks like fun! Your daughter is adorable! I hope she enjoys college. We may take the autotrain next April. One daughter is on poms and her high school marching band does a parade in Disney. Our other daughter is on her university's dance team and the compete in Nationals in Daytona. We want to go to both and I don't fly. Thanks for posting pictures! Did you send your car back in the auto train but fly back? I was confused about that. But that may be something my husband would want to do sometime on a solo trip. Do is keeping her car at school. That’s the reason we took the auto train..

sassyangel yeah if we had to pay extra for our meal we would have brought food with us. Glad overall your trip was good. I really can’t complain for the price we paid. I’m definitely glad we did it. But yeah lunch for 4 people was close to $80 and we didn’t leave full. 😂
