Do these people have any form of intelligence or brains? Do they have to voice the fact that they are so stupid? Wouldn't it be better to stay silent rather than make a fool of yourself ? After being confronted about the president’s racist tweets from Sunday, in which he told four non-white congresswomen to “go back" to the “crime infested places from which they came," representative Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania told Vice: “You know, they talk about people of colour. I'm a person of colour. I'm white. I'm an Anglo Saxon. People say things all the time, but I don't get offended.” “With a name like Mike Kelly,” he added, “you can’t be from any place else but Ireland."People of colour = white ? ? ? The Irish are Gaelic and the English are Anglo-Saxons. They are two entirely separate ethnic groups. Just for a tiny bit of levity, someone on Twitter called his color “rosacea mayonnaise.”

After he said this, I read a fascinating article about what DNA says about Irish origins. What DNA Tells Us About Irish Ancestry Not surprisingly, the closest matches are the Scottish and the Welsh but they also share many traits from the Basque area of Spain.

What DNA Tells Us About Irish Ancestry Not surprisingly, the closest matches are the Scottish and the Welsh but they also share many traits from the Basque area of Spain. There has also been research that the Welsh people could lay claim to be the most ancient Britons, according to scientists who have drawn up a genetic map of the British Isles. As far back as the Ice age. Research suggests the Welsh are genetically distinct from the rest of mainland Britain. Going back to what Kelly said...he certainly isn't Anglo Saxon if he's Irish. The three tribes that we refer to as the Anglo Saxons didn't go as far as Wales and certainly not to Ireland when they invaded Britain mainly from Germany,Denmark and the Netherlands after the Romans left.

I think this episode of Code Switch is a great listen (and do listen, the text is shortened) for those who want to talk about DNA testing or ethnicity whenever race comes up. www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2019/07/10/416496218/is-race-science-making-a-comebackWell, that kind of is a joke at ancestry-testing companies — when they tell us that you can find out who you are descended from, thousands of generations back, to your "actual ancestors." One, you can't tell me who my actual ancestors are, because DNA testing cannot tell you that.
But secondly, why does it matter? Why is it so important to us to know who our distant ancestors were when we have people alive with us right now who can give us our culture, who give us our frameworks, who give us our sense of who we are, our sense of right and wrong, our place in the world?
...
[Race scientists] play on your sense of ethnicity or sense of origin story. They build up this image of you as being a biologically essential person, and that this ties you to this identity, and it becomes embedded in who you are.
And this is what ethnic nationalists do. They play on these assumptions and stereotypes and the lack of education that we have around these issues, and they make us believe that identity is biological, when identity is cultural.
