These people are animals. Always, so expected that they resort to imagining the violent sexual assault of women in the slightest position of power or influence. Inexcusable that this is what the election hath wrought. Praying so hard for 2020 that I'm popping veins. 2020 is beyond my control, it's out if my hands, I doubt ‘god’ cares. I’ll vote. But I’m not holding out any hope. I’m focusing my energies on keeping me & mine safe. What *I* can do in my immediate life to move towards what I want. I was disappointed ( for pretty much the first time in my life ) in 2016. I’ve voted for people who had lost elections before, but life goes on. I did not wail or cry or anything dramatic but I was disappointed that my fellow citizens had been conned by Don the con. I thought lucyg was being tongue in cheek with the ‘we are doomed’ The reality is, they weren’t conned, they knew who he is/was and don’t care or are just like him. But the downfall of society has far out paced anything I expected in 2016. The huge increase in hate has pretty much over whelmed me. The anti semitism, the overt racism, the cheering & approval of the overt racism. It’s disheartening ( I mean can you get more racist than spewing repeatedly the exact example the EEOC has used for decades? ) I’m guessing this is a real turning point in our country. We survived Harding & Buchanan but historians don’t look kindly on their presidency. I’m with you, sister. I think we are walking a very fine line and could topple over into Panem or Gilead, or a very ugly civil war (and they have most of the guns), pretty easily over the next few years. I may have said “we are doomed” with a laugh, but I was dead serious about it right from the start.

I, optimist that I strive to be, had faith in the ‘checks & balances’ And didn’t actually think calamity right away. 2nd thing I’ve been dead wrong about when it comes to my fellow citizens. Let’s say I ‘caught on’ at the passage of the new tax bill everyone thinks is great. Anyone who’s actually honestly looked at what that did last time was seriously concerned. I’ve been very open and honest about stupidly falling for it the first time, here & irl. But I lived in farm country then I saw the buy outs & foreclosures that happened I saw the changes it made to small business. We did not completely recover from the effects of the last go round. I’m deeply concerned this time. I’m not afraid of ‘Gilead’ Exactly, but if not stopped the only direction we can go with these economic policies is some form of a feudal society, a plutocracy led by the rich who control the mega conglomerates. The people who think this leads to economic freedom are dead wrong. And the danger isn’t even Trump. He’s the smoke screen. ( this is why until Trump three his hat in the ring they were courting Chris Christie, he’s another perfect diversion, but Trump came along and he’s even better. Everyone upset ‘hates’ Trump, vote out Trump, impeach Trump. But Trump isn’t even the real danger. If they can deflect the arrows at Trump, win or loose the White House they still hold all the power. Pelosi is perfectly right about that. The danger is the rich white politicians writing the laws & controlling what gets voted on. AKA Mitch & co.

When my mom was dying/died last month, I got to spend a couple of weeks with relatives who 100% voted Trump, call themselves Christians & believe it plus had previously labeled me every libtard label under the sun for speaking out against Trump and for silly things like common sense gun control, believing victims of sexual trauma, the true meaning of pro life, etc. They were mysteriously mum when I found out that hospice was covered by Medicare after railing against Medicare/Medicaid/any safety net. Guess it was okay in that one instance? Nevermind that Mom had been on Medicare for YEARS.
After the funeral, some cousins hung out with my at my gracious mom in laws home because the services were on 4th of July so we bought fireworks, grilled, played cards. One cousin said Trump wasn't the best, but wasn't the worst and I literally choked on my water. They all know how I feel, no mistaking it.
This is of NO COMFORT to us, but at least, at the very least, our grandchildren will say their grandparent stood up for them and for the right side of history. I wish we could spare them the trauma of the decades of 1930's-on Germany & Europe suffered. I hope we can spare them.

But I had ‘faith’ in our system. Let’s just say I don’t any more right now.

Today: President Trump said Friday that Democrats should not use the debt ceiling as leverage amid ongoing negotiations between his administration and Congress."I can't imagine anybody using the debt ceiling as a negotiating wedge," Trump said in the Oval Office, calling the debt limit a "sacred thing in our country." ** House Republicans, including current acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, used the debt limit as leverage in fierce negotiations during the Obama administration. Trump himself tweeted in 2012 that “Republicans must use the debt ceiling as leverage to make a great deal!”** thehill.com/homenews/administration/453905-trump-says-democrats-shouldnt-use-debt-ceiling-as-leverageAgain talking from both sides of his mouth to please his base!!

Why did I hate him and what the heck happened to make him human again? He's still very much opposed to most of the things we would support politically - he's a small government conservative in the most extreme sense. But he's a vocal anti-Trumper as well. The enemy of my enemy and all ...

Thank you, lizacreates and Merge. Now does either of you remember why I don’t like Tulsi Gabbard? Assad of Syria? ETA: Washington (CNN)Hawaii Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is not the enemy of the United States, standing by her opposition to US involvement in that country's civil war two years after she met personally with the accused war criminal.
"Assad is not the enemy of the United States because Syria does not pose a direct threat to the United States," Gabbard said Wednesday morning on MSNBC.
Gabbard recently announced her campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, and she has pledged to draw down US military efforts overseas. Her formal kickoff last weekend followed uncertainty about her campaign operations and staffing.
Gabbard met with Assad in Syria two years ago, saying at the time she "felt that it's important that if we profess to truly care about the Syrian people, about their suffering, then we've got to be able to meet with anyone that we need to if there is a possibility that we can achieve peace."
She is a member of OUR military and went to met him on her own!

casii , so sorry to hear about your mom and your thoughtless relatives. ((hugs)) You Peas are awesome. I didn't post anything during the saga. Death is at once a busy time and a time of waiting. Then once she passed away, I had to drive to very rural OK where I had no reliable internet. 2 weeks, 2 flights, 3 rental cars, 2 hotels and a sweet mom in law. I'm still tired.
But dang, if so many of my relatives aren't literally voting against their own best interests. One cousin's DH is a crop duster. Now, he's having to travel away for more than the entire summer to secure work due to industry loss. Doesn't have health insurance either even though my cousin is a nurse for a local health clinic. This is some messed up cognitive dissonance.

Erik Larsen...
”If we could have it be a straight numbers vote--where candidates aren't walking away with entire states--and every vote counted--the entire country would be purple and the GOP voters in California could have their votes matter as well as Democrats in North Dakota.”
