I'm curious what exactly apple watches do. What are the benefits of having them? Ways you use them? Do you have to have a separate phone plan to use it?

You have to have your phone nearby, as the watch connects with the phone. You can see emails and texts that come in and can answer a call on your watch. I had one but found it annoying.

I love mine. I like the quick glance for messages, news etc. I use the time every single day at school. I don't think my phone has to be with my watch. The earlier versions require it. I don't care for talking on the watch, but I think it has more to do with the signal since my phone may have an iffy reception in those places.

Depends on the generation if it needs its own service. Mine does not (and does not work to its full potential when not linked to my phone). I love it as an activity tracker, seeing my calls and texts when they come in (handy when driving and at home when my phone is who knows where), and most importantly the page your phone feature which is priceless and used daily around here.

This is similar to why we bought one for my dd. A classmate rolled her car last winter. It was dark, she was thrown from her vehicle and couldn’t find her phone to call for help. She had to crawl to her house about a mile away. She had a broken pelvis and by the time she got to her house she had severe frostbite. I told dh that I wanted the watch for dd so if she was ever in an accident and couldn’t get to the phone that this may be an option for her.

I have one and love it. I primarily use it as the best fitness tracker out there (by far IMO). You *can* get a bunch of notifications from your phone mirrored to it, but I have that really really limited. Only texts and emails from VIPs, no social media notifications, etc. I like being able to have music and audiobooks on there to listen to at the gym without needing my phone. Mine is a Series 4 with cellular but I actually turned off the cellular service because I just don't need it. I thought I'd use it, but after about 6 months, I realized I really didn't. I always have my phone with me, except when I'm working out, and I don't want to get calls, notifications, etc. while I'm exercising. I use mine a lot for alarms, as well, and for a quick glance of when/what the next thing is on my schedule. And weather conditions. I also use it as a remote shutter for my iPhone camera sometimes. I don't do that much, but it's very handy when I want to. I also use it for Apple Pay a fair bit. There are some other things I use it for, but those are the big ones off the top of my head. I really like it. I got my first one (a Series 2) as a test device for a project at work and didn't really think I'd like it, but it quickly grew on me and I used it enough that I bought my Series 4 myself

I don't have an apple watch but I have a Galaxy watch active. It does not require a phone plan, it has Bluetooth and wifi.
It has a heart rate monitor, it records your steps, it keeps your calendar, emails, you can text from it, you can download Spotify playlist and listen to it without being close to the phone (good for outdoor exercise), it has a lot of random apps that I haven't tried yet. One thing I love about it is that I have it set as my alarm which vibrates instead of a noise alarm. I personally find this much less jarring than the noise, but some people feel the opposite. It is nice though that my alarm doesn't wake up my husband. It also records my sleep patterns.
It's nice to be hands free sometimes, like if I'm at a store and texting someone, I don't have to have the phone out. Also I like to use it as... A watch. The watch face I use displays the time, date, steps and floors (how many flights of stairs). You can make the watch face tell you all kinds of stuff, and there are tons of them out there. And for the Galaxy watch (don't know if this is true for Apple) you can make your own. This is only a fraction of what you can do with it, I consider myself a novice compared to others I've seen. Personally I think my watch is much more attractive than the Apple watch, I'm not into the square face.

They now come with their own cell service so you are not tied to your iPhone. It costs $10/month. I can make and receive calls on my watch with my phone nowhere near me. The beauty of the watch is that I don't have to "do" anything with it. It works seamlessly with my phone and lets me accomplish things without fishing my phone out of my purse or carrying it with me on a workout. If you do a search, we've had a few threads about Apple Watches and why we love (or hate) them. I've had an Apple Watch since they came out and I still love it as much today as the day I got it.

I love mine. I use it to track my exercise when I play tennis or walk. The most valuable feature for me is that it will ping my phone when I misplace it in the house. As I do multiple times a day.

The cellular watch gives you the ability to leave your phone behind and still be able to have full service, but you can't not have a phone at all and just have the watch.

I love, love, LOVE my watch! It's a series 3 with cell service. It used to be DH's, but he never used it so he gave it to me. I went out that day, got rid of the black rubber man band, got a cute pink one and it has not left my wrist except to charge! Here are the things I do with it:
* Apple Pay. I hardly have to bring my purse anywhere to shop any more. I just pay with the watch. It's more secure and soooo convenient. I travel to London for work also, and I can use it virtually everywhere. My favorite is just waving my wrist at the contact points on the Underground. Wave in, wave out, multiple times per day and I get just a nice single charge daily to my credit card. Love love love. * Texting - texts come to the watch and I can dictate a response right back. * Email - I have one email that is just for important things (no spam etc) and I have it set to forward to the watch so I never miss an important email, which I used to do frequently pre-watch. * Haptics - I like just getting a little tap to the wrist to remind me when I have a meeting or something on my schedule. I also like the way it taps my wrist when I'm using Apple maps for navigating. Fast taps for right turn coming up, and a different pattern for left turn coming up. Sometimes my kids are yapping or I'm listening to a podcast or something and I miss the verbal directions. * Fitness tracker - fantastic. I have it synced to Strava and C25K and can start either with just a tap on the watch face. * Music or podcast commands - can pause or ff very quickly.
I'm sure there are others, but these are the things that come to mind right away. I like it so much that I can see DH looking at it now with covetous eyes and I'm like 'TOO BAD, SUCKA!!! IT'S MINE NOW!!!'

I use mine for alarms signaling the end of each period during school. It's also my alarm in the morning. I really like if for that. The vibration is much less startling that an audible alarm.
However, I have found that it has degraded some social norms even further. I have so many friends that think nothing of looking at the texts or emails as they come in while they are having a conversation with you. For some reason, people were less likely to do that before they had the watch.
I have all notifications turned off for mine, primarily for that reason.
I use it for the alarms and to find my phone when I've put it down somewhere stupid. My car has an Apple Watch app but it doesn't seem to work. I also use it to spy on my yard in Neko Atsume.

I love mine. The newest models don’t need to be near the phone, they have their own cellular signal.
I use mine for lots of things, but the most useful is to ping my phone when I’ve put it down and can’t find it. 😂

The battery life on them isnt great if you have every single notification sent to it, so I only have the really important ones set up to it, which helps prolong it.
It’s an excellent fitness tracker. I like the world clock feature on it too.
I always forget it can control my music and audiobooks I have on my phone with it, without having to touch my phone on my arm, that’s another useful feature.

I LOVE mine! After having several Fitbits and finally realizing how much I hated Fitbit I got the Apple Watch. Mine isn't the very newest one, it's the one just before that. I know there are a million things I could be doing with it that I'm not right now, but I'll get there eventually. Right now I'm using it mostly as my fitness tracker... I love working to close the rings. lol. Another absolutely invaluable thing is the "ping your phone" feature. Honestly... the way these phones have of getting lost... Other than that I don't do much with it yet. I like being able to see at a glance who's texting me if I'm in the kitchen or outside and my phone is in another room. Also, the band is made of some soft silicone/whatever stuff that is MUCH superior to the awful plastic band of the Fitbit, the one that kept breaking when all I did with it was wear it on my wrist. And of course, with an Apple Watch you're getting the support of the entire Apple world behind you... classes at the Apple Store (we have two that are for the Watch, which I plan to take eventually), and the in-store and phone support people. This is why I will never go back to a PC.

Also there are lots of bands available so you can change it up. I have a rose gold one, and I’ve been buying dressy bands for mine on amazon. They’re really easy to change out, and match flawlessly. This is my favorite one of the few I have, they’re stainless steel and I get compliments on them all the time.

Thanks! I have thought about getting one but didn't know if it was worth it if all I used it for was a fitness tracker. My biggest concern is that I don't really want texts and other notifications coming to me when I am with clients and need to focus on them. I think I would get a lot of use out of the feature that pings your lost phone.

Apple Watch 4: (with Cellular)
-takes away stress if you forget your phone somewhere.
Some of these benefits are because it is so much smaller than a phone and on your wrist so you are not holding a phone. For example if you are a teacher, you can say "remind me to update Jafe's grade today at 3pm" "Remind me 6am tomorrow morning to bring salad for the potluck" (A lot of the Siri functions)
-allows you to check messages, get alerts in meetings without being extremely unprofessional
-take calls
-Set timer and reminders

I love mine.
You can set your notifications to fit your needs - if you don't want them to happen during client meetings, you can do that.
I love the heart monitor and fitness tracker. And I'm surprised how much I use it as an actual watch.
At school, I have siri set timers for me pretty often.

Absolutely. This is local to me, and it was on the news for over a week. Horrific but thankful for his watch for sure. Three of us have the newest Apple watch, and we love them. In fact, my daughter's alerts her to aFib episodes quite often. Monday, she took those episodes, uploaded them to pdf files, and sent them to her cardiologist at Duke for her appointment yesterday. When we went, he said that it is actually pretty accurate, and he likes them. He said not as accurate as a 12-lead EKG but still accurate. That was great to hear. I also love the exercise feature, the phone, the texting, all of it. I only wish I could see my step count more easily. That's it. I think the completing "rings" is stupid.

Kristen, I believe you are interested in fitness, correct? Anyhow, it has a little feature to remind you to keep active. So I sit at my desk a lot now. It reminds me to stand up more often and move around. Here's (I hope a good article. A picture anyway.) activity tracker It keeps it cute and you can "close your rings" if you're good for that day and track how you did for the week or month. You can, if you want, join groups I guess to keep you more active and compare you did. Of course it keeps your steps as well. It have a Breathe reminder. I was having a time when I was over stressing and the Breathe feature just reminded me to stop and take a moment. I'm slowly learning new ways to let it do more for me. I'm using my calendar more and the reminders more. I hope this helped you spend more money. LOL

I've had my Apple Watch 4 w/ GPS (not cellular) for about 2 weeks. I bought it to replace my 3rd Fitbit that died. Just wanted to add 1 more thing with fitness for you - you can track an activity with the GPS (biking or outdoor walk/hike for me) and not have your iPhone along and then it will sync when they are together again and show your route/stats. That was a big plus for me.
The dictating a text reply and taking a quick call and not have to dig my phone out of my purse has been super convenient. So are the navigation prompts - I don't have navigation in my work car and this is much more convenient than using the speaker on my iPhone to hear directions.
Biggest downfalls so far: 1) Short battery life compared to Fitbit, although I just bought an extra charger for my car so I can charge on my commute. 2) Doesn't track sleep, which I loved on my Fitbit (I need quality sleep which is alluding me more often, so I loved that feature on the Fitbit) 3) I really wish I had the cellular plan for $10/mo, but my iPhone is my company phone and they don't let them add them to our corporate plan.

I have the series 4 but not with cellular. I got it because I can't have my phone in the lab, but I can have a watch on my wrist. My phone is in my locker right outside the lab, so I'm able to get notifications on it. I also like the activity tracking feature.
