Yesterday I just did a layout with Shimelle's new line. I used a beautiful shade of raspberry cardstock for the background and it is just gorgeous. I also used 5 patterned papers on the layout. I am so in love with the background- I usually use white or black cardstock so this is different for me. I think I'll try another colored cardstock background today.
And by the way, Shimelle's Field Trip is so fun to work with. I really wish it came with stickers and more embellishments.

I use white cardstock about 90% of the time, but Joann's recently had Bazzill on sale for 20 sheets for $2 (or something crazy like that) so I stocked up on ROYGBIV colors. Dang that's an amazing deal. I would have stocked up too! Up here it's 1$+ a sheet for Bazzill. :C

I probably use a mix of cardstock and patterned paper.

I used to do cardstock only when I first started scrapbooking. Then I went to 95% of my layouts being all pp. Now I do a mix. Whatever speaks to me at the moment. I'm not opposed to mixed media on pp or on colored cardstock either. My last 4 layouts: 1 all pp, 1 almost all pp with 1 cs for matting small circles, 2 mainly cardstock with small pieces of pp.

I still prefer cardstock for my backgrounds. It is rare that I use a full sheet of pp as a background. I like that the solid color provides a place for the eye to rest in the design, and it keeps it more open/clean looking.

I admire layouts that have a base of patterned paper but I do not often attempt it myself. It's just usually not my thing. I like patterned paper as an accent. If I do use patterned paper as the base, nearly 100% of the time I gut the middle and then put a 10x10 or 11x11 piece of cardstock over it, usually but not always white, black or Kraft. I sometimes also do a half-and-half, where the base is white/black/Kraft and then I cover half of it with patterned paper. Magical Picnic Serenade by Seanna., on Flickr

Here is my main go-to layout. I use versions of this all the time. I tried to post it above but it wouldn't take for some reason hello painted ladies by Seanna., on Flickr
