This reminds me of when The DaVinci code came out. My sister in law's church had a series of classes on why they should not read it and how the info was all wrong. She was telling me about it and how I should go to the classes with her. I told her I had already read it. You should have seen her face.

I’m not Catholic, I don’t get it, but I think it’s pretty funny given Dumbledore considered love the greatest magic of all. I love the Harry Potter books.

I'm pretty sure I don't care what books a religious organization wants to stock in their library. For whatever reason. That's like worrying about what books my neighbors buy. They can buy or not buy whatever they want, as long as it doesn't effect me. I might think they are fools, but considering the current state of our nation, this is pretty mild. I’m more concerned that an entire school of adolescents is being educated by people who believe they will conjure evil spirits by reading the HP books. Virgin births, talking snakes. Lots of "magical" beliefs to go around. Just not the right ones, apparently.

I think insist in the camp that says as long as they aren't trying to ban it from the whole town, I'm grudgingly ok with it. Of course, I'm aghast at the notion that anyone would think the spells are real. The real point, though, is that some faith based schools believe it's inappropriate to have books that have elements of wizardry/magic in them as part of their library collections. It feels like an infringement of their freedom of religious expression to force them to carry the book. Pretty weird to take a stand on that though, when the Bible has some equally hinky stuff in it, lol.

That school just guaranteed that HP will be read by 98% of their students. Catholic rebellion should not be taken lightly! Did no other Catholic Pea defiantly eat meat on Friday when their parent weren’t around? Or make up sins in the confessional to make yourself seem a little more badass than you really were? Roll your ugly plaid skirt up to a hairbreadth of your girlparts three seconds after passing the Virgin Mary statue on your way out of the school door? Hide a copy of The Godfather inside your catechism book during CCD classes? HP will be flying of the shelves of the local used bookstores in that town. I’d bet my last bottle of Boone’s Farm cherry wine we hid in the Holy Water font on it. 😂😂😂 at Noones Farm. My favorite was always Mountain Berry. 👍🏻 Country Kwencher was ours

I do care, at least in passing (I’m not planning to attend any protests or burn my Rosary which was a gift from a Catholic friend and I love it) ... but it saddens me that a large group of kids won’t be exposed to the fabulousness that is Harry Potter. It’s catholic school, they have a history of doing stupid shit for vague reasons. I can’t get myself worked up about it. Well, except for the fact that they are more worried about a fictional Children’s book than the abuses of nuns & children that’s been swept under the rug for decades. When are they going to ‘ban’ that?

Yes, I will reassure you that this Catholic schoolkid got in her time with "Forever" and "Flowers in the Attic" just like all the other girls did, in spite of the library not having it!

I swear we are going back to the Middle Ages That, and religion has become a cancer on society. It is slowly eating away at critical thinking skills or actually thinking at all.

The selection of books at the Catholic elementary school I attended in the 70’s was abysmal. I’d be willing to bet that most of the books in their library had to have been at least 20-25 years old back then already and they never got anything new. Any kid who was a good reader had read everything of interest by the time they finished third grade, so if you wanted to read anything better you had to go elsewhere for your books anyway.
I too know quite a few kids who finally got hooked on reading with Harry Potter, so it really is pretty sad that the option to check them out from their school library isn’t there.

So as a practicing submarine non even catholic, but probably went to more masses on Saturday than most Catholics.....I can say that I had never eaten meat on Friday until I was 20 or so. 😂 ( don’t get me started on being Methodist on Sunday!) (Or being a bit Jewish for 2 weeks every Easter until I was 8, and my uncle ( I miss him so much, he was fabulous) passed away. Then discovering Easter)

I've been a librarian over 20+ years and fortunately I've never had to deal with a parent wanting to ban a book. One time I had a (notoriously crazy) parent object to a picture book. Per county policy, I had him read the book for himself and he had to write down specifics of what was objectionable in the book. I never heard back from him. At least in public schools, the school system has a very arduous process you must follow to actually get a book removed.

And yet cs Lewis is okay? CS Lewis was a devout Christian and The Chronicles of Narnia have many biblical parallels. Aslan is Jesus.

The thing that confused me about the article is that they called him a pastor and not a priest.

We left the Catholic Church for good about 10 years ago, shortly after the head of religious education at our church told my oldest daughter and a bunch of other kids that Harry Potter books were filled with “evil magic of the devil”.

Older catholic fuddy duddies don’t like anything even remotely tied to witchcraft and the occult. They claim it is evil and will corrupt young minds. The ones who deeply feel this is true will make enough noise until the item or book is banned.
Which does absolutely nothing to stop kids from reading or playing with the item. It just ensures they will be sneaky about it.

The HP books have helped many kids -including mine- to learn to appreciate en enjoy reading. I find this a little sad. I went to a Catholic elementary and high school in the Netherlands (admittedly, several decades ago). Religion was a mandatory class, but I remember that during those classes we read from the holy books from religions around the world, learned about their God(s), compared the stories to the Bible and discussed this in class. I remember a time where we all sat in lotus position on top of our desks trying to meditate when we were studying Hinduism. And the books we read! Let's just say some of them offered a vivid interpretation of what we learned in biology about the human body and reproduction . Maybe it isn't religion per se but more the interpretation of that religion church per country or cultural or political climate?

Why now? The books have been around for years.
The Catholic Church no longer has any credibility, authority and is a stinking cesspit.

I volunteer weekly in my kid’s Catholic School library and I can tell you that not only are there several copies of the Harry Potter series, they are falling apart from being so well read. Please don’t let this one library who got rid of the books represent all Catholic school libraries.

Especially since Magic City Books opened. The authors they have come every month is amazing! Stephen King, Dahlia Owens, Sir Salman Rushdie, David Sedaris! They just hosted their second Drag Queen Story Hour last weekend for the kids. Love the vibe they are putting out into the city.

TOTALUS BULLSHITUM!
I swear, they don't even read the books. If they did they'd realize it actually has a very savior-centric theme. The whole series is nothing but a build up involving self-sacrifice, love conquering all, death/resurrection woven all throughout.
Good grief.
