This was a first for me. I bought some apples before I went to Santa Barbara, but when I found out half way there that I wasn't going to get in to see my mom, I went home and unpacked the ice chest. When I got the approval to go ahead and head up, I forgot to pack them again and didn't eat any until this evening. Thank goodness I didn't take them with me, because I would have just bit into it in the hospital since I wouldn't have a knife or anything with me. Since I was at home, I put it on the apple peeler, but it wouldn't work right because the apple was too big. I ended up just cutting it up with a knife. As I was coring one piece, I felt a sharp prick on my finger. I looked to see where it came from. This is what I found buried completely in my apple. Can you imagine taking a big bite and having this in your mouth? My roommate says I should contact the local police and let them know about it. I was planning on taking it back in to the store along with my receipt to warn the manager, but I didn't even think of contacting the police. I wasn't hurt at all, so as far as I'm concerned, once I show the manager, I'd be done. Do you guys think this is something they would want to know about? I could take it in to the sheriff's office, I suppose. Or maybe the store manager would want to be involved in that too. What would you do?

Is it an actual needle? I would contact non emergency police, they can decide what they want to do. So glad you cut it up, that could have been so damaging! Yikes!

Is it metal? If you think it is man-made (sorry I can 't tell) and was put there intentionally, I would let the police know

Yes, it is a sewing needle. The eye portion is at the bottom of the photo.

And definitely call the police, too.

If it was just a piece of wire, I would think it could possibly have gotten in there from some machinery somewhere along the apple's path to the store. But a sewing needle? That was a sicko. I don't want to keep the rest of the apples. After seeing this, and after my stomach quit lurching at what could have just happened, I grabbed the bag of apples from the fridge to see if any had a detectable hole in the outside. They didn't. I was going to throw them away, but thought maybe I should wait until I talk to the manager. I will bring the remaining apples in along with the sewing needle. My roommate has a metal detector and he wants to run it over my remaining apples to see if they are okay. I'm just not sure I want to eat them. Knowing some sicko had the one in his/her hands is disgusting enough.

Woah- that is not cool. Someone did that, on purpose. IMO, the police need to know.

What a wicked and horrible thing to do! I'm so glad you didn't take a bite, that would have been awful. I definitely think this matter needs further investigation to ensure no one does get a mouthful of pins. I make caramel apples with Granny Smiths and they're always eaten off the core and not cut up. There was a woman in Germany who was caught putting needles in packages of meat. Another person was leaving bits of meat laced with poison and razors where people walk their dogs. Some people are really sick!

Wow. Contact the police immediately. What if there are more apple needles out there and someone gets hurt?
You would feel terrible!
I'm so glad you sliced the apple and were not hurt.

You really need to contact your local PD. With apples being used a lot right now for fall food type dishes this could really hurt a lot of people. I'm so glad your ok!

OMG that is horrible. I don't understand why some people get off on being complete a holes. I would definitely show the store manager. There is no telling if someone did that in the store or if it was done somewhere between the orchard and the store. That is just creepy and crazy.

Definitely contact the non emergency police and also the grocery store. It's possible that the needle was placed in the apple while it was at the store. They could have security camera footage and catch who did it. Like you said, my guess is they did more than one apple.
So thankful that you didn't bite into it.

Also, be prepared for them to suspect you. I know you are not out for any compensation, and that should dispel any suspicion on your part - but there are lots of people who will put things in food, and then try to go for a monetary compensation.
I always cut up apples - and now I know why! Yikes - that would have been horrible to bite into.

Wow!! You know, I opened this thread thinking I would see a worm, and hoping it wouldn't be too icky looking. This is so much worse, and I honestly wish you had just found a worm. . So glad you didn't bite down on it. I agree with the others to notify the store manager and the police. How scary! Now I'm going to be paranoid every time I give my kids an apple to eat.

I will look for the receipt today contact both the store and the police. The only problem is I might have thrown that receipt out. I know I went to four different stores the week before going up to Santa Barbara. I specifically bought the apples to take with me up there. I just can't recall which store I purchased them from. I may end up doing a quick trip to all four to see if the stickers on their apples match the sticker on the ones I still have in my refrigerator. They don't have to have the receipt though, right? I know it would certainly be helpful to know when I bought them. To complicate matters even further, I also picked up two new larger purses two days before this trip and changed the purses out in the hotel room. I justified the purses because I could only carry one item in the hospital with me and I needed the extra purse room for my water bottle and any food I would eat. Plus snack stuff for the pup and a few toys for him. See, total necessity!
(Yes, I took a dog into the rehab hospital! They value the calming affect a dog has on a patient. They bring in volunteers with therapy dogs three times a week to visit. For a personal pet, they have a list of requirements that your pet must meet. You provide your vet's proof of vaccines and current license and rabies certificate to obtain a pet pass. The nurses said my mom ate better and was generally more relaxed and happy when she had my dog curled up on her lap during my visit. I would like to think some of that was me being there too, but both the staff and my mom commented on how happy she was to be able to have the dog visiting.)
I hope I didn't just toss the receipt in the hotel trash while switching out the purses. I hate when I can't remember things.

I know you are not out for any compensation, and that should dispel any suspicion on your part - but there are lots of people who will put things in food, and then try to go for a monetary compensation. I always cut up apples - and now I know why! Yikes - that would have been horrible to bite into. That hadn't occurred to me. The pin didn't actually enter my finger far enough to draw blood, so I didn't end up going to the urgent care and don't even plan to ask for a refund on the apple price. It wasn't the store's fault. And it is my decision to throw away what could be perfectly acceptable apples just for the creep out factor. I suppose they could suspect me, but since I am not requesting anything, I hope that doesn't last too long. I'm just sorry that I didn't discover them sooner when I would have a better memory of where I got them. And to give them an immediate opportunity to check the rest of their stock. I would think it is wise to always cut up apples for your kids, as well as yourself. Especially this close to Halloween when people put weird stuff into apples in the hopes they get made into caramel apples for little ones. Sick bastards. I always look over any fruit I buy for bad spots. I didn't see anything unusual about this apple or I would not have bought it. I think they pushed it in directly opposite from the stem in that specific area so that it wouldn't leave a hole or brown spot on the green skin. They also had to have something like a thimble to get that sucker all the way in there. The apples were quite hard, as a green apple is supposed to be. I think they bent the needle pushing it in, and they couldn't have accomplished that without a thimble or something to protect their own fingers from being pierced. There was no bruising or hole. I checked the peel that had been on there and didn't see any other point of entry.

There is a case of a crazy woman here in Calgary that was putting needles and pins in baked goods at a local grocery store ... she was prosecuted ... not sure what her sentence was but it is a serious offense ...
Definitely make the calls that you need to ...

Absolutely contact the police, and take the apple, needle, remaining apples & receipt. Hopefully the store's security footage will capture the person if this was done in-store.

It does need reporting to the police and the store. There may be more apples with needles in them, that could get into the hands of children at Halloween. I found a loaf of bread once, with pieces of plastic in the slices. I called the bakery and they sent someone out to pick it up. The bakery happened to be located in the same county that I lived in. I think as long as you are not trying to sue or extort money from a company, they take a report like this, seriously.
