I'm on a committee for our local Big Brothers Big Sisters "Big Night Out" gala. And this year the theme is Roaring 20's. It's a dressy event, so I need to start searching for something fun to wear. Not a costume though. A really nice cocktail or evening dress with that 20s flair. Any shopping suggestions?? Thank you all for the great suggestions. I've fallen in love with this one: So prettyHowever spending $275 US (after exchange more like $325ish Canadian) isn't quite what I had in mind. But I'll keep checking -maybe they will have an amazing sale? LOL

Anything remotely "flapper" is going to come across as costume-y. Real women in the 1920s really didn't usually dress like that, it was just a niche trend.
Evening wear of the time had straight silhouettes, unstructured, body ideal was straight up and down so no waist cinchers or wonder bras, dropped waists, a bit of fullness below the hips, hemlines just below the knees to ankle length, dropped necklines in back were a trend, sumptuous fabrics for evening, sleeveless was popular, with evening shawls and wraps, asymmetrical pointed hemlines, drapey flowy bias cut fabrics, chiffon overlays, hip sashes.
If you could find a non-fitted dress with a chiffon over skirt that falls into points at the hem, that would be very 1920s.
Yeah, just look for no waist or bust emphasis, no full skirt like an A line or ballgown skirt, dropped waist or sheath silhouette with a little fullness at the hemline, soft flowy drapey sumptuous fabrics.

Thanks! I for sure didn't want anything "flapper" fringe-y or anything like that.
I found a few retro style shops online, but I fear they are all those China shops that you don't get what you pay for.
We are using this great pattern for all the copy media - has a real Great Gatsby feel to it.
I provided dessert last year, and will do so again this year, and I'm more hands on with the food committee for dinner as well this time.
So excited for this - it's nice to get dressed up once in a while!

@traceyarts is exactly right. Try looking at Downton Abbey styles for inspiration. There are also plenty of YouTube videos on 20s fashion. I’m not sure where you’ll get a dress though as most googling will bring up flapper costumes.

Watching this as I've already got an invitation to a Gatsby themed holiday party. Why?!!!
I'm never going to have a 40 inch bustline so those Retro Stage dresses won't work. Rent The Runway has a category of Gatsby party dresses, so I may look into that.

I also recommend Unique Vintage. You can shop their dresses by decade and they do have plenty of flapper stuff but also some other beautiful styles.

I wear a lot of 40's and 50's vintage style dresses and have purchased a lot from both Lindybop and uniquevintage. I have been very pleased with both.

Modcloth used to have vintage looking dresses. Not sure if they still do but you could check there.

I'd do a search for a drop waist dress.

The mauve/pink one you've linked is $189, not $275?

What a fun party to go to, will you share pictures of what your dessert is? I bet it will be amazing!!! Ha - it won't be anything too fancy. Last year I did raspberry swirl cake, with lemon buttercream. I had it all pre-cut so the caterer just had to plate it. I also made a ton of raspberry sauce for them to drizzle the plates with. That part they sucked at - there was a TON leftover, they hardly put any on the plates. But this year I'm thinking chocolate/caramel for the dessert = chocolate cake with caramel buttercream, and then caramel sauce to drizzle over it. It will depend on who the caterer ends up being. It is for about 250 people, so it needs to be super simple on my end!
