I often go with DH to customer's homes for DH's work. Since we have usually driven a long way to get there or DH is there doing a repair a long time, I frequently go to the customer's bathroom. I'm trying to remember ever encountering a lid that was down and I can't think of a single time. They are always up and that is the way I leave them.

We dont put the lid down for any hygiene reasons. We do it so that no one takes a dip in the middle of the night (or any other time of day). I also dont like the look of an open toilet bowl, but that is my quirk and I own it

I grew up in a house where the lid was always up. I started putting the lid down when my big dog started helping herself to the toilet water. I just got used to the way it looks and the room just doesn't feel "right" to me unless I put it down. My family comes over and always leave it up. I cope. It isn't worth the anguish. I acknowledge it's my preference and not theirs. HOWEVER, if I come to your house and you don't have a soft closing lid- you will hear me close the lid because I FORGET not everyone has that remarkable invention. Worth it's weight in gold, I tell ya.

31 of you have voted, and 27 of you put the lid down every single time? Really? I’ve only heard of this if you’re showing your house.
I’m a heathen then. I don’t like touching toilets, even the lid. I leave it. That's exactly what I was thinking - only when I've been showing the house. I've worked hard to get DH to put the seat down and can't imagine explaining to him that he now has to put the lid down, too.

I automatically close the lid down before I flush. I don't even think about it, and I don't put it back up afterward. My husband doesn't close it. I don't say anything to him about it. I don't expect him to tell me how to use the toilet, so I don't tell him how to either.
As for leaving it up or down at others homes, it depends. If it's someone I don't know well, I always pay attention to how they had it, and leave the bathroom the way it was when I went in it. At my best friend's house I try to remember to open it, but won't worry about it if I forget. At my parent's, I pretty much take over the guest bathroom when I stay there and I leave it down.

Haha... Another thing to add to my "Shit I Never Thought of or Worried about Until 2 Peas" list.
I think I always put the lid down, just because I typically put it down at home. I have never once in my life (I am 56) ever taken note of whether or not a toilet seat in someone else's bathroom was up or down before I used it. I have never once thought, "Oh, I should leave the seat in the same state I found it in." Never.
I guess I will have that thought in my head now, though. Thanks, Peas! I think....

I always leave it down after flushing. [snip] At home I get slightly irate because my DH doesn’t even close the lid to flush. This ^^ I recently encountered toilets where it was impossible to flush until the lid was down, as the flush button was right behind the lid hinge. Loved those!!

In someone else's house, I try to leave it however I found it. We leave the lid up at my house because if we don't, the toilet gets this weird pink ring inside in a matter of a day or two (terrible air circulation in there) - leaving the lid up eliminates that entirely.

Something that isn't on my radar. I guess I leave it the way I found it. I honestly don't know..

How do you all survive in the wild where the public toilets have no lids to put down?

I’ll match how I find it but I think the flush spray is a lot less far reaching in the UK than the US from discussions we’ve had in this before. I don’t think our loos have the same violent flushes.

I hate touching any part of the toilet, so I usually leave it up. I also hate lifting the lid, too many years around little kids that forgot to flush and left "surprises."

I’m on my iphone so I don’t have access to the poll. But I put the sear down. DH is somewhat decent about remembering to do this as well. More than half the time. I don’t get all bent out of shape if he or the kids didn’t put the seat down, but I do prefer it down. I will remind my family and hope for the best.
It bugs me more when someone closes the door to the main floor powder room. If no one is in there leave it open please.

We had guests over at the weekend, and every time I went past the bathroom door and saw that the lid was up, I went right in and put it down again. But that's in my house. I wouldn't do it in someone else's.
Oh and on a similar subject, am I the only person whose post-#2 rule is 'window open, door shut'? Not the other way round, please - surely you don't want the whole house to know what you've been doing in there? Or maybe it's just my mildly medical background that makes me think 'you could do with more fibre' or "curry last night then?' just from the smell.
