I got rid of all my carpet years ago and now just buy cheap Dirt Devils. All I need is for it to vacuum the hardwood floors. I use my Swifter more. I would never, ever have carpet again. The carpet holds odors.

I don't vacuum. I just get a new one when the old one dies. How do you know it dies if you don't vacuum?

I have no idea what new vacuum you might want. I'm still using a Dyson I bought in 2006. About the musty smell, though, can you take it to a vacuum repair shop, tell them the issue, and see if they can fix it so that it doesn't smell anymore?PLEASE try not to add to the landfill problem by getting rid of them before you need to! That is one reason we try to buy the best quality we can with every purchase. They last longer. (I know it's privilege that allows me to do this.)

We had a vacuum that had a musty smell we could not get rid of. We tried taking it all apart, washing every part we could with soap and then with vinegar and water. It was bagless and we replaced all of the filters. I think it was from someone vacuuming up a fine layer of drywall dust. The smell seemed to start after that. We did end up replacing that one when we moved. You are not the only person with a musty smell to your vacuum, google shows this is a common problem. I would google how to thoroughly clean your vacuum and see what you can do.

I am on my second shark. It says professional and anti-allergan...I do not like it at all.It smells musty because no matter how well you try to dry the filters they do not dry all the way. I do not know of a way to reverse that....probably should try to buy new filters....Also it is top heavy and falls over a lot! My first shark navigator was better but after 10 years the power cord became detached from the main body and could not find any repair ideas online. I can smell the badness but DH cannot. Will probably try a different brand when this one dies, which may happen early due to it falling over a lot!

We have a Dyson and a Shark. The only smell issue is from the filters. We replace the filters it doesn't smell anymore. Mostly it was my senior dog and the last few years, she smelled.

I totally do. I like them to be clean and justify it by passing them on to family and friends who are thrilled to have them. I always buy shark.

I use mine until it dies. Recently, I have gone through 3 vacuums in the past 5 years. DH killed one by cleaning up super fine dust from sanding. One was crappy and did not do squat to clean up animal hair. I like my current one but I want something smaller for upstairs so I do not have to lug the current one up and down.

Check with your local recycling centers or city. My city does a twice a year styrofoam and electronic recycling event where they will take any corded electronic or appliance. The larger ones needed advance notice but stuff like vacuums, hair dryers, shredders were taken. We took the last two vacuums that could not be donated or fixed easily there along with the hair dryer that started to spark, the old game controllers, etc.

I think the smell might be because you're washing the filters. Just buy a new set of filters and it should go away. There is no other reason the vacuum would smell bad.

I was given a Kirby when I was married, hated that thing as it didn't suck like they say they do. Can't remember when, but got an Oreck. It has been a great vacuum and have only had it serviced once. A friend of my son's had an Oreck for sale as they were moving. Said it did not suck well, but I looked at it anyway. No wonder it didn't suck well. They had sucked up pillow stuffing and clogged the intake pipe. It was almost like new and they were selling it cheap, so I bought that one. I still have both of them.
OP, are you ensuring your filter is completely dry when you put it back? Might try washing it with a mildew killer or hydrogen peroxide and then sitting it in the sun to thoroughly dry.
Also, for those with a burnt rubber smell, that is usually a sign of a slipping belt or long hair/strings caught up in the rollers or motor.
