When I renewed my license (online) my new one has a gold star on it. Same for DH. Neither one of us had to show any other paperwork or even go in to the DMV. We always take our passports with us even just flying domestically, but as I understand it, our new licenses are Real ID compliant. Where did y’all originally hear about it? I haven’t seen/read anything. But, my DH has an extreme fear of flying, so we haven’t in ages. And I don’t watch TV, or read tons of local news. And I have no idea when my DL is set to expire Even if you don't care about news you should still find out when your driver's license is expiring. One day you'll need ti for something -- ID or being pulled over by the police for something -- and you'll find yourself with an expired license which will give you another layer of headaches to take care of. It's your birthday, but of course everyone's expiration year will vary.

Yes, although an enhanced license is not the same as a RealID. My enhanced license was not realID compliant until this year In which state? In WA state it is. This confusion is why I believe all the states need to get together and call their RealID the same thing!

And I was just pulled over by the police, didn’t even look at it just handed it to him. But seeing this, I plan on checking next time I go downstairs. And it’s not that I don’t care about news, I spend most of my (abundant) free time reading something or another. Much of that is national news. I’m just not in love with my local news site, they seem more entertainment than news.

I wasn’t too concerned because we always travel with our passports even domestically. When I renewed my DL last time, it had the gold star on it. By then I had heard a lot about it on the local news (Waco and Austin stations) so I knew what it was. If you have renewed your Texas DL since October 2016 yours should have the gold star on it too or you will get it the next time you renew. Texas DL is valid for 6 years and renews on your birthday.

Plus the state has been/is sending out notices to those whose DL won't expire before the RealID is mandatory so they can come in and renew to RealID early.
Mine just magically appeared one renewal, no extra paperwork. That's probably because TX has always (or at least since I started driving in the 70s) required the proofs of identity that are needed for RealID in order to get your DL or ID card.
Fun fact: RealID will be required to obtain any type of badge (even visitors) at my work next year (federal facility - NASA).

Yes, I know what it is. I first heard about Real ID on here. I panicked once I heard about the required paperwork needed for women who'd previously changed their names through marriage and previous divorces. I've changed my name twice before going back to my maiden name (24 years ago) and I have no idea where that paperwork is or how to go about finding it. We're talking about 38 years ago for the first one. Just remembered-I do know where the paperwork is for the second one.
Anyway, I've had multiple passports through the years. My current one doesn't expire until 2027-I just got it 2 years ago. I'm going to keep using my passport and not worry about this Real ID. My current driver's liscense is also only 3 years old. I always use my passport when I fly and I don't usually go into goverenment buildings but when I do I'll just take my passport.

Mine too. I renewed online and it came with the gold star. Same for DH.

So I checked. Mine doesn’t expire until 2022, but I never got a notice in the mail about it. I think we will replace ours soon so that we have them for emergency purposes.

I know what it is but I don't have mine yet. Turns out my last license renewed right before they started issuing the Real ID. All 3 of my kids have one (one only has a state ID card but it's a Real ID) and dh just renewed his license so he has one as well. My license expires in something like 3 yrs and I suppose I should get one before then in case i have to fly suddenly.

On a Facebook group I belong to there’s a long thread about someone’s problems getting the enhanced driver’s license (aka the Real ID), and I was shocked to see the number of people who said they’d never heard of it. They had absolutely no idea what the rest of us were talking about. Also the comments about “the illegals just getting a license easily” caused me to have a few sharp comments. 🙄 Do you know what it is? And have you gotten yours yet? I just got mine and it was totally painless, although I was over prepared. Lol. yes and yes, so crazy it rolled out in 2010 and people still don't get it.

It was the most painless visit to the DMV ever. I was just bummed to give up my regular license that was renewed online a few times so had a 14 year old smiling picture lol.

Yes, I know what it is. I don't have one, but I have a current passport, so I use that when I need to fly. I hope that I don't ever need one because my original birth certificate is German and was lost years ago, so having to have it would be a giant pain in the ass.

I’ve had Real ID ( in WA state it’s what we call an ‘enhanced DL’)for probably close to 10 years. Back then I just wanted to be able to travel to CA without bringing my passport. I am not at all surprised that there are many people who have no idea what a Real ID is. To start, it should have the same name across the country (even though it is state issued). NY has 3 levels of license Enhanced - gets you everywhere Read ID does PLUS across the Canada and Mexico borders Read ID Standard

I looked at my state requirments online and they want all legal name changes and the legal paperwork from those name changes. If I can avoid that I will. Plus I really like the look of my current driver's liscense. It has a great smiling photo of me and it's easy to read. Right after I got my current driver's lisense they changed the style to what it looks like now-it has a Maryland State flag all over it and I think it's ugly. It's not an attractive flag to begin with and it's very difficult to see or read anything on the liscense with that logo printed across the entire front. For now I'm sticking with my passport. When I fly 95% of the time it's international and I use my passport for that anyway.

Colorado has had them for years. My license expired today, so I was at DMV getting it renewed last week. I think this is the 2nd Real ID one I've had. They are so surly about the picture. "DON'T SMILE. DON'T LOOK AT ME. LOOK RIGHT THERE. STAND VERY STILL. HOLD YOUR GLASSES." I felt like a naughty, squirmy child. All for the 5 seconds it took for her to get a great mugshot photo.

I live in Texas. I had to renew my driver's license in June and got the gold star. In order to get it I had to prove citizenship.

Never heard of it. I have a passport. Isn't that sufficient? Sure, if you want to carry it around when you fly domestically, or want to enter a military base or a federal building.

I know I have had my star for a long time. I am thinking 2012? I remember having a conversation with a TSA agent who said I was one of the first. Colorado is super progressive with pot and IDs apparently.
