We put in French doors in our downstairs master and regret it. They open out which doesn't impact the room space but there is frequently a breeze here and it is hard to get them to stay open. The main door is on the corner of the house so it easily gets blown closed from behind.

crimsoncat05 we have panel glass sliding doors like this and we also have insect screens on the outside that slide the whole way back. Doesn't change the look but no bugs

Another one with sliders that have the blinds sandwiched in between. I love them! We've had them at least 10 years and no problem with them - and it's not like we are particularly gentle or anything.

Another option would be to tint the sliding doors. My mom has french doors and she applied a tint from Home Depot that lets her still see out, but you can't see in from the outside. She said it was very easy to do and has held up. Her HOA requires they have certain window / door dressings and it was the only way to cover the gap from the blinds they require.

My parents have a single door with fixed panel and it has a screen, that might be a good option and work.
I have vertical blinds now just because I cant decide what to do. truthfully I almost never close them, but want to keep that option. I keep thinking of going to curtain, but I have no other curtains in my house and really don't like them. Oh the dilemmas...so there stay the vertical blinds.

We have curtains on both sliders. The slider to the kitchen deck is a heavier, room darkening fabric. The sliding door to the pool is a thinner material. Honestly I would love to get rid of that slider and have French doors there instead.

French doors look great, but one of the things I love about sliders is being able to leave it open, with a screen closed. I don't want bugs in the house. We have french doors off our master to the deck. Lots of light comes through them, but I do love to open them for even more light and for the fresh air. We have a set of glass storm doors over them with sliding screen panels in them so that configuration allows virtually any option we want. Oh, and the french doors have those wooden blinds over them attached at the bottom so they don't swing when the door is moved. There is a large slider from walkout basement to the patio. I have drapes over that. I sewed the big panels myself and they slide with rings over a big round rod so they are super easy to open and close.

We have the dreaded, not cool anymore vertical blinds. However our turning mechanism broke and my husband "fixed" it because they are no longer being made. I have to stand on my tip toes to open them. I'm not too keen on curtains because my child would use them as a napkin.
I'll be checking this thread!

We have vertical blinds BUT they are fabric covered ones from Lowe’s. They are dark brown and truly are beautiful. It matches the woodwork. A little pricy but well worth it.

Add me to the list of people who had French doors and HATED them. We had them at the lake and liked the look, but they were so impractical. The way ours worked, if you pulled up on the wrong door handle it would make them not close right and people were ALWAYS trying to open the wrong door which drove DH insane.
We had two sets of these stupid doors and when one set had to be taken out because the wall it was in rotted out, we had the option of saving them and relocating them elsewhere in the build, but DH said “Nope. Get rid of it!” We still are stuck with the other one, but we won’t be using that as our primary entrance anymore thank God. They suck.
We had no curtains or blinds on the one set of French doors and on the other set we had blackout patio door curtains mounted right to the door itself. At home on our slider we have vertical cellular blinds that we like. They are so much nicer than the clacky plastic vertical blinds we had on our big windows at our old house.

on our last house we had vertical blinds on our sliding glass door; I didn't like them, but got used to them. (Vertical blinds always reminded me of an office building for some reason, but they DON'T hold nearly as much dust as regular mini blinds do, which is important in this climate. And, the cats can't booger them up or get stuck in them like they could with regular mini blinds.) In this house, we have french doors that go out to our screened-in patio and we do love them. During the cooler months / winter, we open both doors and it makes the living room feel almost twice as big. The french doors have mini blinds built into the windows, in between the two panes of glass. No dust! They operate with a slider mechanism so we can raise/lower and tilt the slats to control the light. They raise up from the bottom, and we usually leave them up a few inches at night so the cats and dogs can see out, lol. I have seen those and wonder what happens if they break inside the windows.... We have these on one of our sliding glass doors and the one side is not working very well. We just don't open/close it very much but I do think it is a pain when they aren't working right. We have another sliding door that just has curtain panels on either side that can be opened or closed.

I have 2 sliding glass doors. One has vertical blinds and the door in my bedroom has horizontal ones. There are horizontal blinds everywhere except the kitchen and living room.

I must be in the minority because we have two sliding glass doors and I have verticals (textured stiff fabric) on both and love them. I can pull them aside just enough to let the dog in and out and I can also open them at an angle to let light in, but keep the nosy neighbors eyes out. I love ours for most of those reasons ( no dog and just neighbors behind and sort of above us)
