I do the mono vision contact lens. My close up vision is perfect, and if they correct both eyes for distance then I need to wear glasses for reading. So I wear one contact, in my left eye, which corrects my distance and read with my right eye. I don't even notice it.
I suggest you try wearing one contact lens only for a while and see how it goes. Some people do have trouble adjusting.

thanks, guys! I just spoke to my brother (phone was easier than texting back and forth, lol) and it turns out he's had a lot of issues with both eyes, not just cataracts. He had a 'macular pucker' in one eye that got repaired (so they did the first cataract surgery then); after that healed, he had the other eye's cataract corrected. Then a little while later, he had a retinal detachment in the other other eye which led to emergency surgery while they were on vacation. !!! Long story short, he's happy with his vision now, even though he still has to wear low-power glasses. His vision was sooo bad they couldn't correct it all the way to 20/20 with the lens replacements. (he also brought up that our Dad has some of the same issues with his retina, so I should be on the lookout for this kind of thing with my vision, too- oh, yay.)
He also brought up that I should think about "what distance/activities" I would like perfect vision for afterward- he chose a close-to-middle-ish sort of vision correction, so he still wears glasses for driving. I think I'm going to get a cheapish pair of monovision glasses made and see how I like them, then go from there.
ETA: "pea guru!" woo hoo!!!
