So decided since money is SUPER tight and I am still looking for a real full time job, I am having a garage sale (when the community sale happens, lots of traffic!!).. anyways, I decided to purge and get rid of stuff I don't use. I have been hauling around 3 crystal bowls since we got married. They are pretty and probably not cheap. Like Mikasa stuff... Is there a want for crystal bowls? Could I get a decent price for them... or what should I price them? Or am I looking at just a couple of dollars? I like them, they are pretty, but yeah, I have done nothing with them in 21 years. (Unless someone knows some great project to do with them)..

I have a couple crystal bowls we have had since we got married. I would check on line and see if you can get a price for them before you put them in your garage sale. Crystal will always be a good thing to sell. People like crystal.

I use mine. I've used them for flower arranging with a frog or tape grid, fruit salad, and I'll put some ornaments in one at Christmas, Easter eggs, pumpkins/gourds, for seasonal decorating.

I didn't know if crystal was 'out' or not.... I have done some of the seasonal thing, but I usually forget. I do have this cool container that I fill up seasonally... right now it if full of wine corks. I did have Christmas bulbs in it and thought to do something spring soon.. (The container is a clear dome lid with a wooden bottom - another thing I dug out that I wasn't using and decided to make use of it..)

Somehow I ended up with a couple four or five crystal vases of varying patterns and sizes. I am not a big fan of them, but I have them grouped together filled with unusual things. One is full of all the bouncy balls I took away from my son (for bouncing in the house,) one is filled with a specific type of shell that I always seem to pick up at the beach, one is filled with coral, one is of rocks that the boys picked up and gave me at somewhere along the line...just stuff. It looks pretty okay. But to sell them? I wouldn't even have a clue either. If you figure it out, let me know??

Thank you for reminding me to put crystal bowls on my list. If you want to sell them maybe try 10 bucks for them depending on the size.

I use one for a fruit bowl; well, only for bananas nowadays. Everything else has to live in the fridge.

Garage sales are a great way to get rid of stuff; not a great way to get rich.
You won't get any top $ out of your bowls.
I would use them for every day use.

Are they cut or pressed crystal? There's a big difference in worth between the 2. I would seriously keep cut crystal.

Check ebay, but make sure you look at actual sold items, not just what people are trying (and failing) to sell them for. People on our local boards will frequently post items with ridiculously high prices and then claim that's what they are selling for on ebay. No, you saw it on ebay with zero bids. Not the same thing.

I have a crystal ice bucket for sale on Craigslist right now...haven't had one bite on it. I'm not sure why, since it's brand new and well priced. I don't think you will get much for your crystal at a yard sale though.

You might get more money for them thru consignment than at a garage sale.

I tried to sell some at a garage sale with no luck, even for dirt cheap.

How does one even go about figuring out what the pattern is? I have had my stuff for a million years and haven't a clue what it is.

They do not sell for much at thrift. Anything but top names seems not to do as well on consignment or higher end resale. Higher end Waterford? Great. Mikasa? Not great.

Funny you made this post. I have a crystal bowl (well, I think it is) by J.G. Durand (found a sticker) and on ebay; one sold for $4.00. There were others listed at $10 that did not sell. It's sitting above my entertainment center collecting dust.

Oddly, I do better with depression glass than I do some of the modern stuff. Funny thing though? I registered for crystal when I got married, and two of the pieces I have were from that so at some point I had to have known what it was.

You aren't going to get top dollar for crystal (or anything) at a garage sale. My mom is always trying to sell her doll collectibles at garage sales and gets mad when people offer her $1 or something. It's a garage sale! People are there for bargains!
I would try to find it online to determine the value but hearing Mikasa I don't think it would be worth much. If you itemize on your taxes you would probably "get more" from them if you just donate it and deduct the value.

Yes, crystal at garage sales will sell, but usually only when priced low, and even then they are not a hot ticket item. I have not come across a bowl I wanted yet, but I've purchased wine and water glasses and dessert bowls, for less than cheap glass at the $ store. Church sales are especially good sources for that sort of thing.
If they are really not your thing, I'd put them out in the garage sale. You might get a bit more through an on-line site, but that usually requires a bit more effort.
If you like them, but just aren't sure what to do with them, I might try searching pinterest for ideas. I get there are people doing really cool things with them that you might not have considered but might really like and think would look great with your decor.

I agree that you aren't going to get much for the bowls. Out of curiosity, I just looked up on Ebay a couple of Waterford cut crystal biscuit jars I own. They are going for less than $50-75. These retailed for around $400 when purchased. Pressed crystal bowls retail for a lot less so I would be surprised if you were even able to get a few bucks for them.

The only thing I've ever crafted with crystal is taking a crystal bowl and adding a base to it. Small crystal bowls get a candlestick base. I found three bowls that were enough alike to use together, two round and one oval. I matched them to three brass candlesticks, two the same height and one a bit taller. I treated the brass with a special paint/patina finish that gave them a rustic look with aged spots of a tarnished blue and then sealed them with a clear varnish to stop the aging effect from continuing. I affixed the three bowls to the candlesticks and used them at Christmas with candy and nuts in them. They aren't too tall, just tall enough to balance the bowl size adequately.
I have one larger bowl that I affixed to a shorter wider base. I think it was originally a candle base, but I'm not sure. I picked it up at a thrift store too. On that base, I treated it with the metal paint/patina to look like old copper that has some greenish blue spots and streaks in it. I put some holiday potpourri in that one, with a few wooden balls treated with the same copper patina look. I was originally going to use it as a fruit bowl, but it was a lead crystal (sticker was still on it when I bought it) and I know you can serve in lead crystal since the contents will have a limited amount of time to leach out the lead, but I didn't want to take that chance.
I would try Craigslist before a yard sale to get a bit higher price, but then there is always the extra hassle of having to meet up with people on Craigslist. I just read the article on the poor pregnant woman who answered the Craigslist ad about the baby clothes. I am shocked and disgusted at what happened to her. What I did learn and like in that article was that some police stations are providing an area for Craigslisters to meet and exchange the item for sale in a safe location. I like that a lot! When I was selling things, I met them in my front yard and had my house locked up. My neighbor kept an eye on me from his window. I just felt safer that way.

Disgusting and sick!!! Anyways, Oh I know I won't get much at a garage sale for sure.... I will think about it awhile.. my sale isn't until the beginning of June. So I will look around and see what I come up with. It's definitely not Waterford. I wish! Thanks for the ideas and such though! I really want to purge and I am ready to just let them go... so unless something really comes to me I will price maybe a little higher than garage sale price and see if anyone bites.. if not I can lower the price or whatever....

Around here, for the last 3 years or so, crystal isn't going for much at all. Depression Glass isn't going for half of what it was either.

I have 3 crystal bowls as well from when we got married, almost 32 years ago! After reading these posts I am going to start using them, like every day.
I don't get emotionally tied to most things, but I know I would be pretty much giving them away if I was to sell them so I might as well keep them and start using them for every day.
