YUCK.... I have that Betty Crocker cookbook from the 60s.. and it probably has a majority of those salads in it. I am very thankful my mom never got into jello stuff... LOL
My mom's husband has a weird one (in our opinion) their stuffing is made like a loaf of bread.. you have to slice it. He says it is a Southern thing. Mom says no, it's your mom's way and it is the most driest stuffing ever...

I think anyone that lived through the 60s and into the 70s has eaten most of those at some point. At least, I know I have. Fortunantly none of them have moved into the new century

He says it is a Southern thing. He is wrong My southern roots go back for many generations and that would *not* be the way a southerner makes stuffing or dressing! I saw that many versions of our green congealed salad exist. We call ours 7up salad and it has 7up, marshmallows, lime jello, cream cheese, pineapples, pecans and cool whip. No cottage cheese in it! It's a tradition from my MIL. She died 22 years ago but I still make her 7up salad every year.

Looks like a bath bomb

Southerner checking in to say in 62 years, I have never, ever seen dressing that looks like a loaf of bread. If they did, we'd be talking about them for generations to come!

whoa - some of those recipes are on the menu for tomorrow. I too, as a southerner have never seen dressing made in a bread pan. For one thing, it would not be enough, we would have to make about five "loaves" and for another, dressing is not supposed to be so firm you could slice it.

I do recall eating jello with fruit inside and ambrosia during my childhood back in the 70s. The jello salads seem very familiar But I don’t remember if I was ever subjected to them. Most of those recipes in the link seem just awful. The only one that I thought was ok was the bologna/cream cheese cake.

I've had almost every form of the Jello Salad listed. I had no idea I've had Ambrosia and Watergate salad. We just use the generic term Jello unless it's the one we named after my brother.

I have had several of those, or very similar versions. I’ve even made the tomato soup cake with my grandma. We used a boxed mix, spice I think, and added the Campbell’s soup and other ingredients. I love all things tomato and thought it was disgusting, but it’s a fun memory I have of her.

I love the lime jello salad, the Coca Cola Salad, and the celery with creamed cheese and chopped walnuts!! They are all family favorites.
We make an orange jello salad - 6 oz. box of orange jello, 2 cups cottage cheese, 1 tub cool whip. chopped mandarin oranges, crushed pineapple. Delicious!

These remind me of a cookbook we used to have called Square Meals, it was chock full of things like this with the history behind them. I totally want to make the Coke, orange jello and cream, cheese thing.

My family always makes dressed bananas. Take a banana cut it in half, then slice lengthwise. Rub Miracle whip all over it then roll in crushed salted peanuts. They aren’t bad right when they’re made, but I don’t like them after they’ve set for more than 15-20 min.

I feel like my upbringing should have me well familiar with loads of these dishes, but nooooo, my mom was busy exploring the joys of a pound of ground beef. We have something at Thanksgiving we call Pink Junk. Just a version of whichever cool whip one from above with strawberry jello as the base.

I guess I should be grateful I don't recognize anything on that list. The closest may have been jello set with fruit, but we just called is "jello with fruit" and it would only be served as a dessert.

Another southerner who says that dressing in a,loaf pan has never been seen in my circle of friends or relatives.
I have a beloved coke cola salad that does not resemble what that article mentioned. Mine was served on special ocassions at university. It featured dark red cherry jello, dark sweet cheeries, pecan bits, coke cola ....and was sweet like a dessert. Have not eaten it in years.

We make a cooked custard for the middle layer (no cream cheese) and top with cool whip. DD made the jello part this afternoon and the custard is made and ready to put on when the jello is set. It wouldn't be a holiday in my family without it.

I've made the ham and cream cheese roll ups but we put a dill pickle spear in it instead of asparagus. We call it redneck sushi and it's delicious!

The ham, cream cheese and asparagus rolls are yummy.
I've had tomato cake (not the recipe shown) and it was ok. I don't like tomato soup, but I really couldn't tell it was part of the cake.

So I made the jello/coke/cream cheese concoction today and it was very popular. I did use cherry jello rather then orange, but it was beautiful and everyone that ate it loved it.

My late MIL used to make Ambrosia - it was actually pretty yummy. When my oldest SIL died and we hosted the memorial gathering, her (adult) kids asked for Watergate salad - I had to google because I had never heard of it but I made it and it too was good.
I make a cranberry jello salad every year - my mum had made it in the 70's and it became a Thanksgiving tradition. It has cranberries, jello, Madarin oranges and pineapple. Pretty sure the original recipe added walnuts and celery but I never have.
And scrolling through the site - creamed onions are a holiday staple here also.
I think I'm old...
