I'm thinking about getting my DD one for Christmas. I do not know much about them. She has been using DH's Microsoft Surface Pro computer with pen, which DH is not too happy about her using his computer. There are some deals on Amazon now, which the drawing tablet needs to be connected to a computer to use. I think I may need to purchase a cheap computer in addition to the tablet as my old computers do not have an HDMI connection. Anyone have something similar? TIA
UPDATE 12-6-19: We went to the Microsoft store to troubleshoot DH's Microsoft pen (tip was not working and he got a new one) and we purchased two Microsoft Surface Go, 10 inch for DD and DS (twins). Thanks for all the suggestions and thinking outside the box for other alternatives. I think they will be excited for this present. I think I want one too!

Look at the iPad or iPad Pro with the Procreate app. That’s what my husband and daughter use. Easier with the Apple Pencil.

Samsung Galaxy tablet gets good reviews. It is a stand alone tablet, no computer needed. However, just like an iPad, you will need to purchase the drawing apps you want since you cannot load the software for a laptop on to a tablet.
P.S. you can buy adobe apps for the iPad that will save and be loadable on any computer using that software (I.e. Illustrator, Photoshop).

I would get an iPad with an Apple Pencil. That way she could use Procreate as it is an Apple program. An iPad does not have to be connected to a computer. That IMO would be a pain. That means it really isn’t portable.
You’d have to get Adobe for your tablet. Having it on a computer isn’t the same thing. Besides whatever computer programs you currently have may not be compatible with a new tablet unless the programs are new.
If you have a Best Buy or Apple store close to you go and check them out. You’ll be amazed! They show the iPad with Procreate loaded onto it already so you can check that out too.

I have three children who are amazing digital artists. Two of them use a Wacom drawing pad hooked up to their (Windows) computers and use Autodesk Sketchbook software. My third child uses an iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil and Procreate. They each have their preferences and it largely depends on how mobile your child wants to be. I don’t draw but I use an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil for digital scrapbooking and digital planning. After my phone they are truly the two most versatile and useful electronics I own .
