This is sort of a spin off from the wind chime thread. Do you have the TV or music on in the background?
I don’t need to have the tv or music on all the time. Even when I work out. Sometimes I am the first one at the gym and I don’t put the music on. Someone else walks in and the first thing they do is turn on the music. The quiet doesn’t bother me. But I also don’t mind random noises, like wind chimes, that don’t require me to listen to words.

I used to have to have music on. Now I prefer silence. I think that is what teaching and raising my own kids can do to you. I love silence.

Rarely do we have music or tv. I was just thinking though I should play music more.

Always have music on and if dh is home in the evening the tv will be on instead of the radio. I have tinnitus and the ringing in my ears is really distracting without some kind of background noise.

I like something on in the background. Not very loud, but I do not like the silence.

I used to always have talkback radio on in the background, but that changed when I moved here and couldn't understand a word! Now, I mostly have no background noise. I will watch TV or listen to a podcast while I knit, but will turn it off or mute it if I am not watching. In the evenings when DH is not home, I will usually have the TV on as the silence is worse then.

I have music on all day, and I leave it on for my dog when I go out ☺️

No.
I don’t really understand the concept of “background noise”. If something is on, it is because I am actively listening to it. If I am not actively listening to it, then it shouldn’t be on. Noise = bad. I cannot fathom why anyone would ever purposely *want* noise, so no, I don’t leave the tv on, have music on, have wind chimes, have clocks (clocks are the worst), or any other torture device that exists for the sole purpose of stealing mental peace.

I almost never have anything on in the background. I might have the news on while I'm fixing dinner, and rarely I'll have music on when I'm cleaning. Otherwise no. And my dh is the opposite. He has something on all. the. time. Radio on immediately in the morning and he takes it with him into the bathroom to get ready for work. Fortunately he doesn't have it on while he's eating breakfast if I'm here... he probably knows that I'd try to talk and he'd miss whatever he's listening to. lol. But when he's in his basement work/hobby room he always always has something on.

I have had tinnitus for over 20 years. And I live alone. The majority of the time I have music playing. It’s better than listening to the high pitched ringing all the time. Plus, I love music 🎶 🎵 🎶

The tv is only on if I’m actually watching something. I like music/podcasts while I’m cleaning/cooking or on a walk. Otherwise I like to just be in the quiet. I had neighbors before I lived in my house that lived in the apartment above me who had loud music constantly on from the time they woke up until they went to bed and it drove me nuts.

Never have TV on unless I'm watching.
I always have music on in the car when I'm driving by myself but almost never if I have a passenger. A woman I worked with years ago said that it was the worst form of torture to have to be trapped in a car listening to someone else's music so I just don't turn on the radio if I have a passenger.
Sometimes I play music when I'm crafting but usually I'm listening to an audiobook or it is silent. I don't like background noise.

I love silence. I've had times when DH has been out of town for three days and I never turned on the TV or music. Occasionally, I'll turn on music if I'm doing something, but usually not and I never use the TV for background noise. The only background noise I like is running a fan at night when I sleep.

I have worked from home for 13 years and my DH works long hours. One DD has graduated and the other is still here. I spend many hours in the quiet and alone. I've gotten used to it and like it but I do like some noise and company, a podcast, audiobook, music, tv. It doesn't have to be on all day long. I know if I worked away from home all day and everyone came home at the same time and it was more chaotic then I'd feel like it was just noise and adding to the noise.

When I was in college, I had to have the tv on in the background in order to study. Now, it is usually on, but Im also often fine with silence.

I can have it both ways. I don't mind being in silence with my own thoughts. I enjoy it. I come from a large and very loud family so in ways I need the quite to recharge. But I also enjoy the TV on to fill the silence, or music, almost always music! Just depends on what kind of a mood I'm in.

I put on music while cooking, cleaning, driving and getting ready to go out at night. Otherwise silence. The tv is intrusive unless I’m actively watching something.

I don't mind silence but if I'm doing something that's a bit mindless then I'll have music on. I just spent a couple of days painting the dining room and did it to the absolute perfection of Morrissey's voice.

I almost always have music playing, either spinning vinyl or streaming to my record player/speakers. I usually can’t stand having the tv on... especially first thing in the morning.

If Dh is in the house, the TV is on. If I am alone in the house, I rarely turn the TV on, if I have downtime, I am reading, either a book or my tablet, and I like quiet. If I am cleaning, I will listen to Sirius radio.

I'm perfectly happy with silence, but I do like having the radio on when I'm making cards or cooking, and the TV on when I'm ironing or crocheting. Otherwise the TV doesn't get switched on until DH gets home.

I rarely turn the TV on when home alone. I generally just enjoy the peace and quiet, unless I'm cooking or doing heavy cleaning -- then it's music.
In the car, I listen to a lot of NPR. If it's not something interesting, I'll often pick a playlist from my phone.

Dh always had the tv on. Since he’s been gone I rarely put it on. When I get home from work I have about 1 1/2 hours of silence until dd and dgd get home. I enjoy it. I work in a large room with a lot of noise. It’s not loud but it’s constant so I listen to podcasts. I also listen to them in the car.

No background noise for me. I have sensory issues. I prefer the quiet.
My primary repetitive noise triggers are video game noises, non-stop tapping of fingers on something, non-stop sniffling of the nose, and chomping noisily while eating harder foods(like chips( >> crunch-crunch-crunch).
I rarely have the tv on, if I do it's to watch something and when it's over the tv is turned off. I will go weeks without turning it on. I generally read the daily and breaking news online, so I don't even have the tv on for that. For breaking news, I will put the tv on but turn the volume off, and listen to update occasionally.
If I have been at work or out and about all day, when I get home I am ready for quiet and to decompress from the many noises of the day. Most especially, if it's been a smaller space (Doctor's office waiting room) and video games are being played and/or conversations are being held via speaker phone. I often drive home from work in car silence, no radio.
I carry earplugs in my purse, so I can put them in if necessary, but they mute the noise not block it out 100%.

Clocks are the worst. I have taken the batteries out of a clock when staying overnight in a guest room. The sound of a clock, is exponentially worse when trying to sleep.

I am a big fan of silence. At home I only have the tv on when watching and rarely listen to music. I go for long workouts/walks/runs in silence. I work from home in silence. But in the car I always listen to music.
