I went out to hang the outside lights across the front of my house. I'm short (5 ft) so when I got to the windows, I found out that I am about 5 inches too short from being able to reach the top half of the gables from the ladder. I am too chicken to climb up on the roof.... So, I posted on NextDoor to see if anyone could come help me for a small fee. I mean, it will take all of 30 minutes. I have the clips, the lights and two ladders. There are four gables over the windows and a larger gable over the porch, which are the areas I cannot reach. I was kinda hoping for some tall kid looking to make a few bucks to come help me. So far I have gotten two responses from people who want $100.00 to come do it. Geesh! Am I crazy to think that is a bit expensive? My yard man spends much longer than 30 minutes to mow, edge and blow out flower beds and bags up anywhere from 5 to 10 bags of leaves and grass cuttings for just $35.00! Its a one story ranch. Anyone over 5"5 could easily do this from a ladder in less than 30 minutes. DD's boyfriend did it last year, but she broke up with him...lol....so now I'm stuck trying to do it myself untill she gets home for Christmas break and brings her new bf home. I just didn't want to wait another week to get it done.

I have someone come and put up my lights every year. He charges me $200 to do the 3rd story dormer windows, second story windows and porch, and first story above the garage. That price also includes him taking them down and packing them up for me.

We have never had anyone do this. We are short people (5’4” and under LOL), so we just never bothered decorating anything but our porch and shrubs/trees.
However, any task that involves a ladder is going to have a premium price, so I don’t know if the $100 quote is that unreasonable.

Once a ladder is involved in anything, the price goes up a lot. And this may sound overly cautious, but I'd be wary of having anyone do work on a ladder at my house unless they are bonded and insured (which also drives up the price). It only takes one guy who slips because the ground is a little soft and the ladder wobbles to end up in a nasty legal battle.

see if your yard man will do it. grass cutting comes to a halt and some yard guys will do this.
but, honestly, getting anyone to come do lights for under 100 is a bargain.
maybe post on next door for a neighbor kid to help.
but first i would try the yard man.

Permanent lights are amazing. You can't really see them when they aren't turned on, as they are underneath the trim thing. They are wired into the garage and controlled by an app on our phones. You can choose whatever colours you want, make themes. Whatever you want. We turn on the red and white ones on Canada Day, easter colours at Easter, pink or red on Valentines day, Purple, orange, green at Halloween and lots of different themes at Christmas. Sometimes we change them every day at Christmas time.
And best of all, they are perfectly straight, and nobody has to go outside and put them out or take them down. No ladders, nothing. We love them!

Are they just LED strands? Can they be added after the house is built? Do you have a picture?

We just had a quote given to us, $150 an hour for two guys. They also provide the lights the first year at $2 a foot. The following years, you only pay the labor.

Neither my husband or want to get on the ladder, so we don't do lights on the house. They do look beautiful though! I would justify spending the money to hire a professional to do it. I would worry about using a friend/neighbor, and he or she falling and getting hurt. And we figure if we did it ourselves and got hurt, medical bills would be a lot more than the price of hiring a professional.

Lights are a money biz. I’ve gotten lucky and my neighbors kid just turned 16 and got a car so he was eager to make $50 to do my icicle lights and pathway candycane lights. I could do all but the side peaks myself but honestly I just don’t want to.

We pay about $150 for a 1 story house along the roofline. Our last house was 2 stories and larger so it was closer to $350.
It always seems kind of insulting when someone wants work done but then complains about the price by saying it is easy or won't take that long. The price isn't just about how long it will take.

Ours is $80 for 2 gables, across the top of the garage, and the entryway.

If it was so easyl, you wouldn't need to hire someone. If you need to hire someone, it's going to cost for their time and effort. $100 sounds like a bargain.

Yes, we got them done after the house was built. They are guaranteed for 10 years. We used Trimlight. They do it all. They came out and gave us a quote for all sides of our house, the front and back only, or just the back (we're on a corner lot and have streets on all 3 sides). We chose to just do the front and it cost us $2,200 2 years ago. So it's not cheap, but it was well worth it to us. And when you think about it, if you're paying someone $300 per year, that comes to $3,000 over 10 years. We paid $2,200. And that's in Canada, so it's definitely going to be less in the U.S.
Will send DH out to take some pictures during half time.
Seriously, it was worth every penny. The person who recommended them to us loves theirs as well, and also consider it to be worth it.

Nanner thanks! My DH is General contractor. We’d install them ourselves. he doesn’t want to be able to see the lights if they’re not on. Our HOA also has rules about “Christmas lights” being up past New Years. If they can’t see them, they can’t bitch, right? 🤣

We don't have HOAs around here, so wouldn't have that issue if they were able to be seen.

@nanners those are so cool! I SERIOUSLY want permanent lights! We could do them around our tall gables that DH hates putting lights on. I showed my 8year old and she went and told dad that we HAD to have them. He didn’t agree but I don’t think he was listening. We’ll work on him. 😂

We always did our own but DH had a stroke last Thanksgiving. He’s doing good but his balance isn’t as good as it used to be and I won’t let him get on a ladder. We hired someone last year for the first time and they charged $100. They aren’t around anymore so our yard guy is going to do it this year. He needs the work. DH arranged it but I think the price is the same.

My neighbor had her son do them for me in exchange for me dog sitting her dog for a week. I think that was a fair deal. It took him about 30 minutes. I still think $200/hr to string lights on a one story roof line is a little steep. I can understand paying more if they furnish the lights and supplies and its a two story house and they come back to take down later...but that wasn't my case. If I hadn't reached the "I have no business climbing around on ladders and roofs by myself" stage of life I could have done it. Joys of getting old!

Wow. 30 minutes to mow, edge, blow and bag up 5-10 bags? Your lawn people must be superheroes. That would take my guys a minimum of 60 minutes and probably longer. Anyway, in this area they charge $250 and up to put up lights - even just a strip across the front, and thats if you can find someone willing to do it. I'd pay the $100 and be glad!

My neighbor just had hers done and I asked her what she paid. $400 and that includes clean-up. Our houses are both two stories and she has very high peaks.
I would not have anyone on my property on a ladder if they weren’t licensed and insured! Everyone is sue-happy these days. One wrong move and....
