...and the websites we visit, and items we click on. I knew this before just like you did, but technology has moved really fast. I didn't know they're doing this now (see article): NYT: "They See You When You’re Shopping"
Good grief. It's all out in the open now.

Yep. I want a puppy and joined a couple of English Cocker groups. Suddenly I'm inundated by every dog stuff selling outfit on Facebook.

DH and I were just laughing over the fact that we mentioned something while our iPads were out then all of a sudden, it's all over our FB feed.

I have visited 2 sites recently, looked, didn't buy and have received emails from both sites asking me to come back. One of the email subject lines said: We noticed you noticing us.... Kinda creepy

Reminds me of the beginning of Minority Report where Tom Cruise is trying to run around anonymously and as he walks in/by stores they addressed him by name and asked if he liked a specific recent purchase.

That's taking it to another level, wow.
I had a good laugh a few minutes ago when Chromebooks started showing up in my Facebook feed. Earlier today, at work on my work computer, I was helping a coworker choose a Chromebook for her son. Never in my life have I shopped or spoken about Chromebooks. Our work computers don't log into Facebook. My Google account does not sign into my work computer. There shouldn't be any way to connect the dots but somehow they did.

I manage an eCommerce site and we are just getting into machine learning. We really only sell one product, so we won't be using it to nudge you to buy something or buy more of it. For us, it's going to be a fraud prevention tool.

Perhaps your phone picked up from your work computer and transferred to your home computer. I know I will look up a destination on Google maps (I’m never signed in to google) on my iPad, and the next day in the car it shows up as an inquiry on my Android phone so I think there must be a way.

A group of us were in my living room the other night wondering where a Big Lots was. One of them Googled it, but not me. Suspiciously though, I am now getting Big Lots ads on Facebook where I never saw them before.

I went into a Hallmark store here -- 1st time I've ever entered the store. I saw a Brand new to me - some soaps and lip stuff for men. I purchased a lip conditioner for DS's Christmas stocking. I used a credit card to make the purchase. I am not a special member any sort. I get home, log into FB -- and there is that brand in my FB feed!

I've had a couple of experiences recently when online shopping that I really hate. I'll be looking and the chat box pops up with a specific question. I do NOT find that helpful, I find it extremely intrusive and downright creepy. Both times I closed the website and didn't buy a thing. Leave me alone while I browse! I've always felt that way with B&M stores, and even more so when I'm browsing in my own home.

It's creepy as all get out.

I wonder how long it will be before it's not just Facebook listening to your every word via your phone, but your insurance requires you to download a "helpful" app (for your benefit, of course), then listens to every time you complain about a sick stomach, a headache, talking about a night you drank too much, hears about junk food you eat, etc, and starts making coverage decisions based on it.

So that is why my phone keeps asking me to turn on bluetooth. I don't do it, but it keeps asking. I watched a video on YouTube about how to turn some of those things off on your phone and found it really helps my battery life. It might just benefit me to go back and look up how to keep snoopers out as well.

I posted this on the ad blockers thread a few pages down, but I don't think anyone saw it.
Have you all tried Brave? Check out brave.com. It's a free Chrome browser that blocks trackers and you get no ads, no intrusive ads in Facebook other than the little non-flashy ones at the side, no "can we talk?" message. And when I follow LibraryLady's off-the-wall links that take me from Pompeii to bikinis, I don't get any swimwear showing up all over my Pinterest feed as I used to. I use no ad blocks so it runs more quickly, and it updates automatically. I've been using it for several months now with no problems.

Yep. I got super annoyed with my old phone (Samsung) that I turned something off (wifi maybe) because while I was shopping it was trying to get my attention to "tell everyone you are shopping at Fred Meyer." Um, NO!
My new phone doesn't do that, but if I use the GPS it automatically marks my parking space, which is funny because I turned the GPS off when I got there and my phone still thinks I'm parked in the next town from us, three weeks later.
I have blue tooth on (because of my fitness watch) but I think I need to turn it off!

Orson Welles was off by a few decades but Big Brother is definitely watching, and listening.
I know you all will think I'm crazy, but I've had ads pop up in my FB feed for things I've only THOUGHT about, not searched. I've thought about something while driving and it'll be on my FB the next time I open the site.

It's creepy as all get out. Yep. Google (for example) hears keywords through your phone and then stores that information and you see reference to it across all platforms you use that also have Google. And our shopping habits isn't all that is being tracked. I think a lot of corporate and foreign espionage is happening during casual conversations at dinner. You have your phone in your pocket or purse, you say a keyword, and your conversation is recorded for analysis to see if you just revealed a nugget of information. This isn't tin foil hat paranoia. There's a reason the govt and corporations have secure rooms phones aren't allowed in. And it isn't because the phone's owner might be the one recording the conversation.

For her birthday last week, dd opened a card from my aunt who sent her a g/c to The Bay, our local dept store. She’s 11 so she confirmed where The Bay is and we had a brief conversation about it. Now I get the adds on my phone 😮😮😮. So freaky.

People think I'm overly cautious as I'm not on FB, I don't allow cookies, I don't tie my accts. together, I don't donwload many apps, etc.
I'm not overly cautious. I just work in the industry.
It's getting scary out there - and we ain't seen nothing yet. Wait 5-10 years. Someone mentioned 'Minority Report'. Yep.

I’m imagining someone sitting at scrapbook.com or Altenew watching as I put items in & out of my cart trying to figure out what I want. LMAO Well I’ll tell them, items usually leave my cart for price reasons or high shipping costs. It’s as simple as that. Price. I seem to have a problem in that if it doesn’t cost much I buy what I like - I’m going to work on that. Really, I am.

What if you have the phone in flight mode? Does it still "listen"? Probably not. It certainly couldn't transmit the info. Is it possible? Yes, but probably not worth the effort to write the software that would allow it. At least not for corporations. They'll just wait until you go live again and start tracking which brand of shoes you are interested in. If you were a person of interest to, let's say foreign operatives, they can get past airplane mode and powering off. The only way to 100% make sure the phone isn't being eavesdropped is to either remove the battery, or, place it in a metal box (Faraday cage) and then ground that box.
