I'm not clicking on that on my phone but I really don't think you need any further reasons to panic. You're doing quite well on your own.

The Weekly Standard is not news. And any article that tries to claim that ebola might be airborne you should know is full of garbage.

Irresponsible "journalism," motivated by politics.

I was just thinking I wasn't seeing nearly enough ebola-related panic.

Knowledge is power, not a reason to panic. This article brings up several very good points, especially point 2 regarding the reproduction number:
"In September the World Health Organization’s Ebola Response Team estimated the R0 to be at 1.71 in Guinea and 2.02 in Sierra Leone. Since then, it seems to have risen so that the average in West Africa is about 2.0. In September the WHO estimated that by October 20, there would be 3,000 total cases in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. As of October 7, the count was 8,376."

Interesting that Duncan's ro so far is 2. So same rate of transmission

I think the very interesting part will be to see if each of these nurses is also a 2. That would mean four more infections, then eight, sixteen...etc...

You are looking for reasons to panic, instead of looking for reasons to be calm and rational. And you want to take the rest of us with you.
It really doesn't accomplish anything.

If you're bound and determined to get panicky, have at it.
There are about 300 other diseases of which this hypochondriac is much more afraid.

I think the people with reason to panic live in West Africa - the latest WHO predictions are pretty grim. I am very concerned with the ability to mobilize sufficient resources to actually stem the epidemic there.

I couldn't get through "number 1" in that article without rolling my eyes. I am afraid that my eyes would be so far rolled into my head that I would not be able to see again, so I had to stop reading.
OP, I don't "know" you, but I am going to make some suggestions. First, learn about virology. Learn actual science not what some political news media is presenting. That article, at least the first few paragraphs is nothing more than fear mongering. All this "they don't really know" is quite frankly CRAP. If I hear one more time that the virus might mutate, I am going to scream so loud that you will all hear me! "Oh, it might really be airborne." Sure, it might be, but it isn't! Learn freaking science and learn what airborne actually means.
Times like this illustrate how far behind our country is in science education and how insane out media has become.

Really. Ebola in the U.S.: 1,000 people under some level of watch"As of Friday, a pool of about 1,000 people are being watched for symptoms, have been asked to monitor themselves or have been urged to check with a counselor at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The group includes a handful of people who have been ordered into quarantine, a larger group that is being closely watched with temperatures taken at least daily and a much larger group of travelers who may haven flown on a Frontier Airlines jetliner used at some point by an Ebola patient traveling with a low-grade fever." ETA: Let's just get through the next month without anyone else contracting it or being put on a watch list, then we'll see.

What's interesting is that you choose to focus on this sort of story rather than reports that, for example, some areas of west Africa than were previously struggling with ebola are on the point of being declared ebola-free.

You mean this story? WHO declares Ebola over in SenegalSenegal had exactly one Ebola patient. One. And Senegal has gone 42 days without a new case being detected. That's quite a difference from the current situation in Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone....and even though the US has only three cases, that's still two more than the WHO-declared-Ebola-free nation of Senegal.

The flight crew just locked an African-American woman from Texas in the airplane bathroom because she was vomiting. Looks like the OP isn't the only one panicking. Let's add racial profiling to the mix. The chaos has just begun.

Ebola, Three Reasons to Panic and Three Reasons to Rejoice: Panic! 1. Ebola is coming on too strong. I wasn't done with BENGHAZI!!!! yet. 2. I might have to be informed by actual SCIENCE. Oooh, science and facts are scary!! 3. Ebola might force me to actually care about Africa and "those people". Rejoice! 1. I get to fear monger, spread misinformation, and induce panic. Awesome! 2. I get to roll out my latest Obama conspiracy. 3. I don't have to worry about problems that are more likely to affect me

If what they say is true about the transmission and not being contagious until severe symptoms hopefully they will have a rate of 0 since they were caught early. I also wonder if we will see anymore healthcare workers infected from those who cared for Duncan?

There is no panic here for me.

I live and work in the Dallas area - not panicking here or changing our behavior. I really doubt that the two nurses have transmitted the disease to any of their contacts, by the time they both discovered it, they were in the very very early stages of it. If you notice, the people living with Mr. Duncan, who came in contact with him before he was diagnosed, ARE NOT SICK. The 21 days for their exposure is up this weekend. They were exposed in the early days of the disease.
Will there be other cases in the US - yes, but they will come in from overseas. Someone who screened as healthy when they left and were healthy when they first arrived, will get sick. But I hope we have learned some lessons in the last 3 weeks.

I saw a funny tweet (and I wish I could remember where so I could give credit where credit is due) that said something along the lines of "with people believing the media hype about the Ebola virus mutating and becoming airborne, does this mean we now accept that evolution is real?" Funny in in a sad, sad way.

Can I just say, I had no idea, none what-so-ever, that so many people were barfing in public. I'm not sure I would have ever known this little factoid had it not been for Ebola.
